Ep 69. Why do I hurt after sleeping and feel unrefreshed? Sleep and Fibro Part 2
Conquering Your Fibromyalgia Podcast
11/16/22 • 23 min
Text Dr. Lenz any feedback or questions
Like many with fibromyalgia, you may wonder, "why don't I sleep well? Why am I exhausted even after sleeping for 7-9 hours? Why do I get "sore" from sleeping? Why is sleeping painful? I'll finally get some awful pain to subside; I drift off into bliss eventually.... But then, when I wake up from sleep, I'm wincing from horrible pain before my eyes are even open. How am I in more pain than when I went to sleep?"
In this week's episode, we will consider these questions and others, such as which comes first, poor sleep leading to pain or pain leading to poor sleep?

Ep. 46 The "Curious Case" of John Marsh. Part 6 of Margaret's Story
Conquering Your Fibromyalgia Podcast

Text Dr. Lenz any feedback or questions
During this week's episode, we continue to time travel 100 years back in time to hear the very interesting case of Margaret's second husband John Marsh. We also hear about the long-lasting impact the abuse from her first husband had on Margaret's life.
Her biography, written by Darden Asbury Pyron, gives a chronological in-depth look into her life. I have encouraged those struggling with chronic health issues like fibromyalgia to write down their story. As we walk through her journey, I will discuss her symptoms and physical findings, medical assessments, evaluations, and treatments. You will hear in her history how much has not changed, yet much has evolved in our understanding. I found out about Margaret Mitchell through research and the journal article discussing her case.
As a doctor passionate about helping those struggling, I can't help wanting to reach back in time and sit down with Margaret in my clinic. I would have enjoyed spending hours and frequent follow-up visits discussing her struggles and working to lessen her mysterious pains, fog, and fatigue. Her history gives insight into the limitations of medicine in the first half of the 20th century. Sadly, current sufferers with fibromyalgia will likely find that they will fit somewhere on the spectrum from never receiving a correct diagnosis and getting proper education and treatment to getting up-to-date education and comprehensive care.

Ep 78 Movement as Medicine. Rose Harwood from the documentary Invisible: the Film shares her Recovery Story Part 1 of 3
Conquering Your Fibromyalgia Podcast
01/18/23 • 37 min
Text Dr. Lenz any feedback or questions
In this week's episode, we are starting a three-part series about arguably one of the single most powerful treatments for fibromyalgia. It is more powerful than common medications, such as duloxetine, cyclobenzaprine, and amitriptyline. We will discuss the powerful role movement played in treating fibromyalgia in Rose Harwood. She was told at age 14 that she had fibromyalgia and that she should prepare for a life where she had to restrict her expectations of what she would be able to do in her life. She was told that she would have to greatly limit her most treasured activities, including keeping active and becoming an actor. Despite being told this, Rose discovered what made her feel better and what made her feel worse and, on her own, discovered how she could live better and went on to put fibromyalgia into remission despite being diagnosed at a time when relatively little was known, and treatments were limited.
Rose's story is one of several of those living with fibromyalgia just shared in the new documentary, Invisible the Film. Her story is unique because she was able to recover and continue to stay recovered from fibromyalgia. I hope that hers is a story of hope that will inspire many. At the same time, I recognize that it might be triggering to others who have never recovered and are living or have lived many years with severe symptoms. Rose also has a year-long program called Zero to Hero to help those with fibromyalgia use movement to live better with fibromyalgia.

Text Dr. Lenz any feedback or questions
Understanding Long-Covid under the Fibromyalgia and related conditions framework, also known as nociplastic pain conditions.
In this episode of the Conquering Your Fibromyalgia podcast, host Dr. Michael Lenz explores the possible connections between Long-Covid and Fibromyalgia. He reviews two articles(A and B) providing different perspectives on the issue, focusing on the similarities in symptoms and the overlap with other chronic pain conditions. Dr. Lenz explains the term Long-Covid, detailing the range of persistent symptoms experienced by patients post-COVID-19 infection and how they mirror those of Fibromyalgia. He discusses studies attempting to understand and define Long-Covid but the lack of evidence supporting those such as persistence of a viral infection. It has been proposed to rename it to Fibromyalgia-like post-Covid syndrome. In a second opinion piece, the parallels between Fibromyalgia and Long-Covid based on past research are discussed. They propose that Long-Covid and Fibromyalgia should be viewed as a network of interrelated disorders with a shared pathogenic mechanism and encourage an evidenced based multifaceted approach already in existence from our understanding of fibromyalgia type illness. Dr. Lenz emphasizes the need for understanding and giving evidence based answers and solutions to those suffering.
