Confetti Worthy Women - EP 34. Women are our first Teachers [an Interview] with City of Sandusky's Diversity + Economic Opportunity Manager

EP 34. Women are our first Teachers [an Interview] with City of Sandusky's Diversity + Economic Opportunity Manager

11/07/22 • 41 min

Confetti Worthy Women

The first male guest on the podcast!
Marcus Harris, a native of Sandusky, Ohio, is the Diversity and Economic Opportunity Manager for the City of Sandusky. In September of 2021 Marcus made the decision to bring his talents and skills to the City of Sandusky’s team. His duties include overseeing the City’s employee committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, developing a DEI strategic plan for the City, and managing the implementation of the plan. Marcus is aiding the City in recruiting a diverse pool of applicants for City positions (full-time, part-time, seasonal, internship) so that the workforce reflects the rich diversity of the community.
Last but not least, he is also working to create pathways to sustainable wage employment for local residents through regional workforce sector partnerships with local educational institutions, county government agencies, and private sector partners.
Our conversation here focuses on the impact of women in his life, and the inclusion of men, women, blacks and whites in our workforce today.
Some of my favorite takeaways from Marcus >
"It's not a zero sum game, we can all win"
"It's our responsibility as men to help ourselves, to be better"

Some of my takeaways from EmpowerHER LIVE! 2022
EmpowerHER LIVE is a personal development conference that took place in Phoenix Arizona on Oct. 21 - 23 hosted by speaker, podcaster and community builder Kacia Ghetmiri.
One of the keynote speakers at the event is one of the greatest motivational speakers of our time and is a personal MAJOR inspiration to my life, Trent Shelton. For those who aren't familiar Trent was released from the NFL and then found his path through the creation of an organization called Rehab Time. Some of my favorite takeaways from Trent were:

  • Stop bringing your vision to people who aren't visionaries.
  • Sometimes when your circle get's smaller your vision will get clearer. - Trent Shelton

Our surprise speaker at the event was the one + only Jamie Kern Lima. For those who aren't familiar Jamie sold IT cosmetics, her problem-solving make-up line of 300 products, to L'Oreal for $1.2 billion in cash in 2016. At that time she stayed on as CEO and later she stepped down from day-to-day operations in 2019. Some of my favorite takeaways from Jamie were:

  • Your gut is more powerful than anyone else's opinions.
  • Let your knowing be more powerful than the NO.

One additional quote, takeaway that's mentioned in the episode by enneagram expert Tracy O'Malley

  • Create that moment when the black sheet becomes the GOAT.
