Smith was ambushed and shot at his home in Koloa, sparking outrage within the community. Who could commit such a heinous act? Investigators soon uncovered a family of suspects and a motive tied to Hawaii’s leprosy isolation laws. Common Mystics - S2E13: Dear Dr. Menninger in Topeka, KS
play

09/09/21 • 47 min

On this episode of Common Mystics Jennifer and Jill discuss a family of renowned doctors from the early 20th century. The Menninger family became giants in the psychiatric community. At a time when the mentally ill had few treatment options, they created an outpatient clinic in Topeka that focused on mental health. But the family standout was Dr. Karl Menninger. After publishing his first book in 1930, he contributed to a widely read advice column in the Ladies Home Journal. In it, he offered his expertise to those who wrote in for advice on topics that included sexuality and relationships. Perhaps Dr. Karl should have heeded his own advice. Listen in as Jennifer and Jill uncover the sordid details surrounding the clinic and the private life of Dr. Karl Menninger. Common Mystics - 50: Murder at the Polls in Hazlehurst, MS
play

07/14/22 • 48 min

On this episode of Common Mystics a champion for equality is shot dead at the ballot box in 1883 Mississippi. John Prentiss "Print" Matthews seemed an unlikely hero for civil rights. Born to a wealthy slave holding family, he would go on to represent the political interests of both white and African American farmers in Copiah County during a divisive time. Reconstruction (1865-1877) had failed to secure equal rights for freedmen. By the 1880's, white supremacists had seized power and wielded it to intimidate those who would vote against their interests. But Print Matthews would not be intimidated. Listen in as Jennifer and Jill give voice to one man who stood up for equality in the face of terror. Jen and Jill share their inspiration behind Common Mystics' Mini Meditation for Connecting with Loved Ones Who've Passed Away. Recently, the father of a close friend passed away—a remarkable man who left a lasting impact on both Jen and Jill, teaching them that not all dads are deadbeats. Jen recounts how he made his presence felt on the day of his wake, verifying that communication with his family is still possible. In response to this experience, the sisters created their next Mini Meditation as a tool for anyone seeking to connect with a loved one on the other side. On this episode of Common Mystics Jen and Jill delve into the enigmatic circumstances surrounding the death of a Puritan woman in 1673. Rebecca Cornell tragically perished in a fire at her Portsmouth home, a death authorities initially deemed an accident. However, the narrative took a chilling turn days later when her brother reported a ghostly visitation from Rebecca, seemingly seeking vengeance for her murder. The alleged perpetrator? Her own son, Thomas Cornell, Jr. This accusation led to Thomas’ murder trial, establishing a perilous precedent for future legal proceedings in New England, notably influencing the Salem Witch Trials.
