Coming Out Late
06/06/22 • 30 min
In this episode, Robin announces her latest collaboration with Women OUT West Tours whereby Robin will lead and facilitate in-person “Firefly” Retreats in Escalante, UT. The inaugural Firefly retreat is October 9-13, 2022. But that won’t be the last, so if you cannot make it on October 9, there will be plenty more to sign-up for. What an opportunity to be out in nature and have deep, meaning facilitated, and non-facilitated conversations with other women who ‘get you’! In this episode, Robin also touches upon a little bit of Gay History when she discusses the Stonewall Riots, the book, “Game Changers: Lesbians You Should Know About”, and her new favorite podcast, “Making Gay History”, by Eric Marcus. “Making Gay History’s” unique format, historic context and non-celebrity interviews make for an entertaining AND sobering way to learn about the mind-blowing prejudices and harassment our gay brothers and sisters endured, and oftentimes didn’t endure, before us.
In this episode, you will also learn...
- The importance of knowing our Gay History. As a Late Bloomer herself, Robin describes how little she knew about the Stonewall Riots that took place on June 27, 1969, and decided she wanted to learn more about her gay brothers and sisters who came before her.
- The importance of PRIDE month and little ways you can feel and show your Pride during the month of June.
- The the Women Loving Women (Virtual) Speaker Summit is on Saturday, June 25th at 3pm EST. Sign up using this Calendly link: https://calendly.com/womenlovingwomen/women-loving-women-speaker-summit-2
- The only way to get your hands on a copy of the book, “Game Changers: Lesbian You Should Know About” is to go to: www.lesbiangamechangers.com
- How one lesbian, Donna Hitchens, a recent law school graduate changed the lives of hundreds, maybe even thousands, of lesbians first, by forming, (with some help from Equal Rights Advocates in San Francisco), The Lesbian Rights Project, which later became the NCLR, (the National Center for Lesbian Rights).
- How the birth of “Curve” magazine came about, thanks to the former bookstore clerk and magazine Founder, Frances “Franco” Stevens. First and foremost, “Curve” was a celebration of the women shaping our community.

In this Part 2 episode Robin picks up where last week's cliffhanger left off, finding out what Daine decided to do with their hair. You’ll also hear how the other folx relate to their own head of hair, recalling past experiences as well as current day reflections.
You’ll hear the group members discuss topics such as:
- “...Cutting my hair shorter and shorter was a reclaiming of myself; a claiming of myself.”
- Hair is an essential aspect of our personal identity, self expression, and confidence, and that the right haircut can allow people to showcase their individuality.
- Going to a salon versus a barber: what’s the difference?
- “I wanna go by she/they, but a lot of people in my life don’t understand, because I look feminine. My hair has always been long; I love my hair long, and I don’t want to cut it, BUT, I wish my hair looked more like I feel on the inside.”
- So many of us received negative feedback from the males in our lives when we wanted to cut our hair shorter; so we grew to love our hair long.
- Feeling dysphoria about our hair from a gender aspect, AND an aging aspect. “I don’t want to dye my hair anymore - I want it to go grey!”

Some of us went a lifetime having ‘no clue’ we were attracted to women until much later in life. Others, on the other hand, always knew they ‘liked girls’, but stuffed it down, way down. Internal homophobia, deep-seeded homophobic denial, and compulsory-heteronormativity all played a huge role in delaying, and denying, our journey to discovering and embracing our true selves. One thing we late-bloomers know for sure is, if we were straight, we sure as heck wouldn’t be asking ourselves if we weren’t! But don’t take our word for it, keep listening to the Coming Out Late Podcast and hear the similarities in our stories.
In this episode, you will learn about...
How Robin figured out she’s gay, (using her unique ‘research technique’)
How many of us get to the point of: “Ok. Enough is enough already. I have to figure this out! Why am I feeling this way toward women? ”
“So this IS a ‘thing’. It isn’t just me.”
Robin’s theory on her own deep homophobic denial
A few podcasts and books specifically for women questioning their sexuality

Ep. #161: Coming Out Late to Rude Comments (Replay)
Coming Out Late
12/30/24 • 20 min
In this episode, Robin shares with us some examples of the types of comments we could possibly and most likely WILL receive as we slowly OR quickly come out to people all around us. Knowing what questions *may* be asked during your coming out process is half the battle - at least that way you can prepare for them, right?
Robin also shares with us some possible retorts to these questions, and maybe a few retorts that she really wouldn’t advise you saying, but ones SHE would love to have you say in these oftentimes rude, intrusive scenarios. Sometimes ‘knowing’ what to expect when we’re navigating the coming out process IS half the battle!! Hopefully you won’t need ANY of these responses - but be prepared and decide how YOU want to respond should you be asked a personal, intrusive question.
In this episode, you will learn...
- What are some of the common questions we ARE asked when we’re coming out to others - or even if we’re NOT coming out and we’re simply in a social setting among other not-straight women.
- How to handle rude and inappropriate personal questions when faced with “curious” people questioning YOUR sexuality, for you.
- Should you respond? Should you respond snidely? Should you confront their blunt rudeness? It all depends....
- Being prepared and expecting the unexpected is usually a good tactic to take!

In this episode, Robin celebrates PRIDE month by showcasing a very special group of young people from a Los Angeles-based non-profit organization called RAINBOW LABS. Rainbow Labs creates a series of after-school programming (both in-person and online), seeking to mentor and support underserved Queer and Gender Non-Conforming (QGNC) youth ages 12-18. The idea of Rainbow Labs, launched in 2020, was to address the unique challenges faced by queer and gender nonconforming youth. The content of the labs are designed by QGNC youth for QGNC youth, led by a team of mentors who are trained in trauma-informed care, cultural competency, and youth development. Rainbows Labs is essentially a safe space to explore identity, life skills and empower QGNC to participate in real-world applications. The Mission of Rainbow Labs is to embolden Queer and Gender Nonconforming youth to discover, curate and experiment with the elements of a fulfilled life through community building and the lived experiences of mentors. Their Vision is a world in which all Queer and Gender Nonconforming Youth see themselves as co-creators of an equitable, and progressive society.
In this episode, you will learn...
- The importance of youth having queer representation to meet, know and work with; as well as the importance of LGBTQIA+ just being kids, and not always having to be “on” as advocates protesting or picketing.
- Why we, as newly queer youth and queer adults, want and need to be recognized and accepted as queer in all of our respective communities.
- Why acceptance from our loved ones and close friends is critical to us.
- How damaging and harmful it can be when we’re told by family members, parents, siblings, that, “it’s ok to be queer, but just don’t tell anyone, keep it to yourself.
- The similarities and the differences that BOTH of our generations face in the challenges of coming out and living our authentic selves.
- Queer youth coming-out to their parents; and queer moms coming-out to their (queer) children.
- What does QGNC stand for? Queer & Gender Nonconforming.

Ep. #52: Coming Out Late AND Bisexual, Part 2
Coming Out Late
09/26/22 • 41 min
In this Part 2 episode, Robin continues the conversation with the people in her weekly Bisexually Speaking support group continuing to discuss what it’s like to not only come out late, but come out late AND bisexual - it’s a complex journey. Robin’s weekly support group, Bisexually, is not always recorded, but we collectively agreed that it was time to record this conversation in an effort to begin dispelling the many myths surrounding being a bisexual, and coming out late today. The Bisexually Speaking support group gives participants the chance to talk-out and tell their stories regarding all of the different ways that coming out as bisexual can look in ‘today’s’ gay world - all in a virtual, private, safe, and supportive environment. This pre-recroded, casual, roundtable discussion covers a whole range of topics, things to consider, lots to reflect on, and reveals just some of the many challenges a woman might face if coming out late, AND coming out as bisexual.
In this episode, you will learn to question and explore . . .
- What DOES “being bisexual” mean?.
- Why are ‘veteran’ lesbians so judgmental and opinionated toward late blooming bisexuals?
- To ‘label’, or not to ‘label’? Who’s decision is it anyway?
- Can I give myself permission to fall in love with whomever I want to fall in love with?
- Are there different “attraction” categories too?
- Should we react-to and stop “outside forces/strangers” from labeling and boxing-in our young children with hetero-norms?
- The multitude of myths about bisexuality.
- Was there any gay sexuality representation when you were growing up? If not, would it have made a difference in your coming out journey?
- Is “representing” your gay sexuality important to you?
- In what ways do YOU “represent”, or show-up-for your sexuality?
- What is the “default” and do we need to get away from it?
- Ask ourselves: how do I want to GIVE myself to another person?
- What are the different categories of attraction?

Ep. #49: Coming Out Late & Scared to Date, Part 2
Coming Out Late
09/05/22 • 52 min
In this Part Two episode of Coming Out Late & Scared to Date, Robin picks up the conversation where she left off last week. Last week Robin initiated an impromptu group discussion recorded in Zoom, around a topic that seems to be on everybody’s mind lately - navigating dating after coming out late. Whether you are newly out and have never dated a woman, or have had your share of dating experiences, this two-part series titled, “Coming Out Late & Scared to Date”, Robin asks her guests four basic foundational questions, as well as together, venturing off into a whole range of topics, things to consider, and lots to reflect on.
In this episode, you will hear other late blooming women talk about . . .
- Why do you want to date? What’s motivating you to date?
- Being ‘Ok’ sitting in silence with yourself.
- All human relationships are complex; and can we learn from one another?
- Are you someone who “has” to be in a relationship all the time?
- Looking for that person who gets me, understands me and doesn’t just like the “theory of dating me”, but actually likes dating me-for-me.
- Is this the right time for you to be dating? Are you going through enormous life changes? Does your job exhaust you? Are you physically available to date?
- What is scary to you about dating?
- Do you fear someone really ‘seeing’ you in this authentic new version of yourself, when newly dating?
- How would it feel or what would it look like if we dated ourselves?
