Balancing Teaching, Working Out, Love and Motherhood with Jennifer O’Shea
Coffee N° 5 with Lara Schmoisman
08/31/20 • 23 min
When becoming a mother, your schedule may go out of control and sometimes it’s hard to find a balance between your own personal life and taking care of your child at the same time. Today’s guest, Jennifer O’Shea, knows exactly how that feels and that’s why she created her own blog called “Teach.Workout.Love,” a Working Mom Blog Community for all busy moms and milspouses. Jennifer wanted to create an outlet for moms to share their creativity and inspiration on balancing life, motherhood stories, and staying healthy and fit.
Highlights:
- As a military spouse, Jennifer had to move from New York to Washington: when she did so, she realized that she had to make new friends. That’s how she started blogging and connecting with other mothers in order to figure out how to bear with motherhood all together.
- When it comes to receiving advice from people online, especially if it’s about health-related concerns, Jennifer thinks it’s best to first ask your doctor, and then be open to other suggestions.
- Although it may sound crazy, Jennifer has actually made real friends online and she has even founded a business with one of them!
- Balancing your mother persona and working persona requires a lot of time management. Inevitably, some things may overlap but it’s good to manage a schedule in order to avoid that.
- Jennifer gives some useful tips on finding inspiration to write in blogs
- When having to make a review on your blog about a product that you don’t really like, it’s best to talk to the company and be honest.

Innovation is More than Just Magical Products with Chris Barton
Coffee N° 5 with Lara Schmoisman
09/19/22 • 31 min
As an inventor and businessman, Shazam founder Chris Barton knows how to get an idea off the ground. In this episode of Coffee N° 5, he talks about creative persistence as a methodology that uses innovation to overcome hurdles during development. His company Shazam didn’t start with a completely original idea. According to him, there were many companies already trying to solve the problem of identifying music before he hit the scene. But by reframing how to solve this everyday problem, he created something truly innovative and successful.
What you’ll learn:
- Great innovation takes place across the board, it’s not necessarily a product (It can also be business processes, models, etc.)
- The benefits of the agility that comes with smaller start-ups and the creative workers they draw
- How a healthy and constructive attitude towards fear helps entrepreneurs super-charge their outcomes
Chris Barton started his career with one of the most innovative companies that came out of the dot-com boom of the 1990s: Google. With that foundation and inspiration, he founded Shazam, one of the most successful and “magical” products that has been downloaded more than one billion times around the world. Today, Barton is an Innovation Keynote Speaker and is working on a new startup that will use artificial intelligence to prevent drowning in swimming pools.

You probably heard the phrase “think outside the box.” And our guest of today, Van Lai-DuMone has taken it to the next level. She believes that creativity can (and should) be brought into the workplace. With her company, Work Smart Advantage, she creates a plan to make the work environment a fun and creative place, as a way to promote team development, problem-solving, and leadership.
Highlights:
- Creativity is good for your company! When Van started in the corporate world, she found out that training, evaluations, everything was...dry. And there wasn’t any retention of information after that.
- For Van, there’s a difference between team building and team development. It’s not just about having fun in the workplace, it's also about learning to work together, know what each one of us can bring to the table. Creativity is a way to lower our barriers and be heard.
- How to make people feel attached to your company mission? Van knows that most of the time, employees don't feel connected to the company mission, so it’s important to change that. Start working with your staff to see what their missions and values are, find a common ground to build from where to start to build.
- Van believes that team building is even more important now, when many people are working from home. It’s important that leaders create the space for connection, for people getting to know each other.
- Being a Leader and growing inside the company. Van discusses how usually people very good at their job get a promotion that they might not want or not are prepared for: being a manager. People need support and training for this role. And is this what they want? What do they want or expect from a promotion? Let them have a say on this.
- Van shares with us three tips to start bringing creativity in the workplace.
