Classics You Slept Through: Episode 17 - Northanger Abbey - Chapters 1 - 8
It's the start of our fourth book and we're taking a big swing, going right to the top - Jane Austen.
She's probably one of the biggest, most read, most beloved authors in the world... and for good reason. She's a phenomenal writer, and her works are full of wit, sarcasm, heart, and character.
Download the ebook, if you want to read along, and we'll start discussing it next week.
Listen with us, leave a review, and tell us what you think of the book!

Classics You Slept Through: Bonus Episode 1 - Talking Reading with Dad
Classics You Slept Through
07/01/20 • 28 min
A bonus episode!? What is this??
If you listened all the way through yesterday's wrap of Moreau, then you know that Mere has given birth to a healthy baby girl, and honestly, it couldn't have come at a better time, as we haven't yet started Northanger Abbey.
Never fear - we will start that book once Mere is back on her feet and ready to record again.
In the meantime, we (or, mostly Kyle, with a little help) will be bringing you some bonus content, starting with today's interview with our Dad.
Back in our first episode, Mere and I both discussed how our life-long love of reading was formed very early, by our Dad reading to us nightly. We'll talk with him about the decision to read to his kids, what he enjoys reading (or not), and some of his favorite memories and books from our youth.
Hope you enjoy, and look out for more bonus content over the next few weeks.
If there's something off the wall you'd like us to tackle before we're back to Northanger Abbey, let us know!

Classics You Slept Through
07/14/20 • 25 min
One final bonus episode this week, as we ramp up to get back to your regularly scheduled podcasts! Today, Mere has selected a few poems from Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses, and they're read by our dad! You get to listen to the voice that read to us growing up. Usually it put us to sleep at bedtime, but hopefully it won't have such an effect on you!
Poems you'll find in this episode:
- To Any Reader
- Travel
- Bed in Summer
- Auntie's Skirts
- The Land of Counterpane
- The Land of Nod
- My Shadow
- Escape at Bedtime
- The Swing
- The Unseen Playmate
- My Ship and I
- My Kingdom
- The Dumb Soldier
- Autumn Fires
- Night and Day
- The Moon
- The Land of Story-Books
Also, while briefly discussing last week's shaggy dog story, I made reference to Norm Macdonald's moth joke. Take a few minutes to check it out - it's one of my favorites!
For next week, we'll be starting Northanger Abbey! Look for chapters 1 - 8 in your feed on Tuesday!

Classics You Slept Through: Episode 36 - Dracula Discussion 1 (Chap. 1 - 7)

Classics You Slept Through: Episode 36 - Dracula Discussion 1 (Chapters 1 - 7)
Tried a bit of a different discussion format for this episode. As this book is an epistolary novel (told through letters and diary entries), the narrative has to be pieced together a bit. There are gaps in time that you as a reader need to fill in, and the narration voice shifts frequently.
This first section is the most egregious in the book, with things told out of order, so for our discussion, we've attempted to recreate the actual timeline of what is happening in the story, chronologically. We'll jump around the first seven chapters, tying in what's going on outside of Transylvania, as it intersects with Jonathan Harker's adventures at Castle Dracula.
Let us know how we did, and join us tomorrow as we read up through chapter 14!

Classics You Slept Through: Episode 18 - Northanger Abbey Discussion 1 (Chap. 1 - 8)
We kick off our look at Northanger Abbey by examining the landmarks of Bath and wondering what a summer there is really like. We meet our main characters, and enjoy Jane Austen's fourth wall breaks.
A correction in this episode: Mere called Austen a Victorian author... she was a Regency period author. She profusely apologizes for such an egregious oversight.
She also references a TED talk, which you can find here.

Classics You Slept Through: Episode 45 - A Princess of Mars Discussion 1 (Chap. 1 - 7)
Today we're breaking down the first seven chapters of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic pulp space adventure, A Princess of Mars, the first of the Barsoom novels, and the first appearance of John Carter.
This will be a new experience for Mere, but maybe we can open her mid to some sci-fi along the way.

Classics You Slept Through: Episode 122 - The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Chapters 1 - 4) It's always exciting to begin a new book, and this time we're diving in with the grand dame of mystery herself, Agatha Christie! This is her first book, published in 1920, and the first mystery that we've covered on the podcast. It also introduces her iconic detective, Hercule Poirot, which is going to give us pronounciation fits throughout. Here we read the first four chapters, which waste no time introducing us to the the suspects and kicking off the adventure with a murder most foul!

Classics You Slept Through: Episode 121 - Men Without Women - Wrap-up We're bringing our time with Papa Hemingway to a close. It's been a different experience, covering a collection of short stories, and we've only just scratched the surface of the depth of these stories. We'll wrap up our thoughts, and hopefully you're inspired to keep reading and discussing. Later in the episode, we announce our next book, which we'll start by reading through chapter 4 for next time.

Classics You Slept Through: Episode 76 - Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) Discussion 1 (Chap. 1 - 4)
Well, here we are, at the start of our grand vacation down the Thames, just three friends and their dog. Yes, three. Not four. And one of them is a dog.
Now that we have that cleared up, let's discuss the first four chapters of Three Men in a Boat, by Jerome K. Jerome. We'll talk about the timeless relatability of this novel thus far, and the meandering anecdotes relayed by the narrator.
