Madison’s Trying to Clean PFAS From Our Water. It’s Not Easy.
City Cast Madison
08/09/23 • 22 min
PFAS chemicals show up in all kinds of things: non-stick cookware, stain-resistant clothing, microwave popcorn bags, firefighting foam. They’ve been dubbed “forever” chemicals because they don’t break down in the environment, making them very hard to get rid of. And they’re showing up in our water.
Scientists are still discovering the health risks of PFAS, but research suggests that PFAS exposure increases the risk of kidney and testicular cancer. The CDC says most of us have been exposed to PFAS at some point.
The Madison Water Utility plans to install a PFAS-removing filter at one well that they shut down due to contamination. It’ll cost $6 million dollars. Producer Dylan Brogan caught up with Joe Grande, Water Quality Manager with the Madison Water Utility, to learn how it’ll work.

The Restaurant Preserving Wisconsin’s Dairy Legacy
City Cast Madison
10/12/23 • 19 min
Seven Acre Dairy is many things - a cafe, a restaurant, a hotel, a butter plant.
But if you talk to founder Nic Mink, it’s also a place for restoration. He renovated a shuttered old butter plant in Paoli, Wisconsin, a small community about twenty minutes from downtown Madison. It’s drawing neighbors near and far to enjoy locally-made butter, soft serve ice cream and a farm-to-table restaurant.
It sits along the banks of the Sugar River, nestled among a savanna with oak trees older than the state of Wisconsin. Learn why Nic’s trying to preserve a little slice of Wisconsin’s dairy heritage in rapidly changing industry.
🧈 Join us every Thursday as we explore Madison's food culture, from the brewers and bakers to the chefs and cheesemakers.

Farewell, Circus World Elephants! 🐘
City Cast Madison
08/29/23 • 23 min
Elephants are everywhere in Baraboo: painted on the highway overpass, displayed as public art in the park, depicted on murals.
But one place they’re not anymore: at Circus World.
Circus World was the original home to the Ringling Brothers Circus. For more than a hundred years, they’ve included elephants as part of their circus performances. Today, you can still see circus acts there; they’re now owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society.
But as of August 27th, there’s one mammoth change: no more performing circus elephants. Circus World’s last remaining elephants have retired and will now live at a sanctuary in Oklahoma.
So what it’s REALLY like working with elephants? We spoke with professional circus clown Karen DeSanto. Karen worked for both Ringling Bros. and Circus World.

How Paying College Athletes is Changing UW Sports
City Cast Madison
11/22/23 • 23 min
We’re in a brave new world of college sports. One of the biggest revolutions in college sports came when the NCAA allowed college student athletes to get paid. Where previously some athletes might have received scholarships to play, now they can also get branding deals worth millions. Some UW students have reportedly signed contracts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
But how does it all work? What does it mean for the students, the teams and the university? How is it changing UW sports?
Here to answer these questions and more is Jim Polzin, sports columnist at the Wisconsin State Journal. Producer Dylan Brogan caught up with him in November.

Charles Sherrill was everything a gentleman of his generation was supposed to be: rich, handsome, charming, Ivy-Leagued. He was impossibly well connected and extravagantly mustachioed. He was also the person who, as much as anything, decided whether American athletes would participate in the 1936 Olympics. Faced with one of the great moral dilemmas of the day, America needed the wisdom of Solomon. Instead, it got the wisdom of Sherrill.

Winter’s coming. As of tomorrow, parking in Madison gets a little more complicated. Alternate side parking starts November 15th, meaning you have to park your car on the correct side of the road each day to avoid getting a ticket. If you live in the central city, this applies to you whenever there’s significant snowfall and the city declares a snow emergency.
City officials say that while enforcement has been down the past few winters, that could change this year.
Producer Dylan Brogan spoke with Madison Streets Superintendent Charlie Romines about what you need to know to help the streets get plowed and avoid a ticket.
