We’ve been talking about gifts this month. I’m going to complete the journey today by commenting on your gift to me – 300 weeks of letting me talk about the things I care about. I thought I’d use this landmark occasion to give you four examples of things I preach, read, hear and play, and tell you a bit about why, after five and a half seasons, I still like tying up all these bits of business into a podcast for you every week.

BEST BOOKS OF 2024, final edition
Register your feedback here. Always good to hear from you!
In lieu of my regular monthly report, I am here today to finish my list of the best books I’ve read this year. My final total for 2024 is going to come in at between 204 and 210 books — well off my ridiculous pace of 2023, but still, a lot. Obviously I have no hope of retaining everything or even anything from the vast majority of them. But casting a wide net makes it more likely that I find a few real delights. With a great deal of effort, I’ve whittled them to 10. Here they are.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith
Tombstone, by Tom Clavin
The Little Girl who Fought the Great Depression, by John F. Kasson
The Mayor of Casterbridge, by Thomas Hardy
The Battle for the Beginning, by John MacArthur
* Thunderstruck, by Eric Larson
Worst. President. Ever., by Robert Strauss
* Luckenbach, Texas, by Becky Crouch Patterson
The Boys in the Boat, by Daniel James Brown
Goodbye, Mr. Chips, by James Hilton
A Man of Iron, by Troy Senek
God's Hand on America, by Michael Medved
* Boundaries, by Henry Cloud and John Townsend
How to Read a Book, by Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren
* = carryovers from the list from the first half of the year

We’re starting the year off right with Texas month. I’ll be giving all the unfortunate uninitiated out there the grand tour, high points and low points alike. We’ll start in the D/FW metroplex (whether that’s a high point or a low point is up to you) with my friends Jerry King and Jeremy Dehut, who work with the Twin Creeks church of Christ in Allen, just north of Big D. Jerry is the one who sounds like a native Texan.
