For this mini-installment, Travis and I give our thoughts on Marvel's latest villain-centric flick, Morbius. We have moderately different opinions on the subject. This episode is pretty much spoiler-free, so you should be safe if you haven't seen it yet. To read my full review, click here!

We conclude our series on Oscar snubs with an all-time classic Western: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly! It's one of the most stylized and influential films ever made, and a must-see for any serious movie buff. Plus, it features prime Clint Eastwood and an iconic score by Ennio Morricone! Trust us, you don't wanna miss it. For wine, we pick a delicious red grape that's gotten a bad rap over the years. Listen in to learn more! Zodiac (2007)

Cinemavino

play

03/23/22 • 35 min

Tonight's Cinemavino continues our look at all-time Oscar snubs. For part three, we tackle a David Fincher classic--Zodiac. It's engrossing, intelligent true crime epic, centered on the hunt for one of our country's most famous serial killers. An all-star cast delivers incredible performances, and Fincher creates an atmosphere of genuine suspense, despite this being based on historical events. Incredibly, Zodiac received not one Oscar nomination. For vino, we're pairing wines that get a bad rap. Tonight: Riesling, which is generally dismissed as a sweet white. That's not always the case. The Ravines from New York is a great example. Be sure and listen in for our tasting notes: Next up, we discuss one of the great Westerns of all time! To read my full review of Zodiac, click here!

Rounders (1998)

Tonight's episode of Cinemavino continues our series on the best films to be completely snubbed by the Oscars. Rounders survived so-so reviews and box office to endure as an all-time cult classic. At the very least, John Malkovich should've snagged a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His work here is scene stealing and tremendous. To pair with this topic, we're drinking wines that've also never received a fair shake. Chardonnay certainly fits that bill. Most people think of the big California oak and butter bombs, but there are plenty chards from other regions with a completely different flavor profile. We try one from Washington's Columbia Valley, and a classic from Burgundy: The chard from Revelry, and the Macon Villages from Louis Jabot, which range from $18 to $25, respectively. Be sure and listen in for our tasting notes! To read my full review of Rounders, click here! Next week, tune in for one of the most underrated true crime movies ever made!

Heat (1995)

Cinemavino

play

03/10/22 • 41 min

This episode kicks off our March series, where we look at the best movies that were never nominated for an Oscar. Our first installment features an all-time classic: Michael Mann's Heat, starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, and many others. It's a three-hour crime epic with phenomenal performances, trend-setting direction, and one of the most incredible bank heists in cinema history. If you're a movie buff, this is one you have to check off the list. As with our Batman podcast, we're also discussing wines that have garnered an unfair reputation. At the top of that list is Merlot, one of the great old-school grapes. For this installment, we try the Camp Merlot, which turns out to be very fruit-forward and easy-drinking--perfect for binging classic movies. To read my written review of Heat, click here! Next up, we tackle the best poker-based movie ever made. Enjoy!

Tonight, Sean and I take a look at one of the biggest releases of the year: Matt Reeves' reboot of The Batman. We have slightly different opinions of the finished product. This podcast is mostly spoiler-free, but the last few minutes *might* contain a few mild plot hints. Don't worry--we'll give you a heads up before we spoil anything. Also, March kicks off our series of all-time biggest Oscar snubs. We'll pair these movies with wines that, for whatever reason, get a bad rap. This starts with Merlot, which has garnered an unfair reputation as a soft red. That's total BS, and we'll tell you why in the podcast. For this episode, we enjoy the Merlot from L'Ecole Winery, out of Washington State. It's a classic example of the grape: Full-bodied, oaky, dry, and built to last. Now, enjoy another fine episode of Cinemavino! To read my review of The Batman, click right here!

Fair warning: This episode goes heavy on the vino. We indulged in a few too many glasses before we sat down for this Oscar preview, and things get a little goofy. I'll be honest, this one was a challenge to edit. Still, we do breakdown the Oscar favorites, as best we can.

We conclude our Valentine's Day/Date Movie series with City of Angels. It's definitely the oddest and most cerebral of this month's offerings. On the plus side, it does have a bitchin' soundtrack, with lots of killer 90s vibes. For vino, we tried the sparkling Vouvray, from Champalou. Vouvray is Chenin Blanc, and this one has all the hallmarks: It has a dry minerality, but with fun, festive notes of lemongrass and dried apples. This one retails for around $30, not exactly cheap, but way more affordable than any legit champagne. To read my full review of City of Angels, click here!

We're heading out the ballgame! This week's Cinemavino kicks off our six-week series of baseball movies. Episode one is at the top of my all-time favorites: Bull Durham. It was a modest hit when it came out, but Ron Shelton's rom-com has slowly gained steam as one the best baseball flicks ever. We pair this cult classic with an easy-drinking white wine from Portugal. Plus, as a bonus, we throw in a delicious Kolsch beer from Oregon! To read my full review of Bull Durham, click here! Next up, one of the biggest sports movies ever!
