For the month of October, we're celebrating Halloween the only way we know how: by watching a whole bunch of horror movies! Specifically, this October, we're taking a look at a small piece of horror film history by diving into the post-SCREAM teen horror revival of the late 90s and early 00s!
This week, we’re focusing on a lesser known film of the era, although one that’s starting to gain a bit of a cult following, largely thanks to a recent blu-ray release from Scream Factory. CHERRY FALLS was a film directed by an up-and-coming indie director from Australia who was poised to be the next big thing. But cold feet from the studio, spawned by a series of battles with the MPAA, lead to the film being dumped on the USA Network in a highly edited form.
On this episode, we’ll discuss the film’s creation, as well as all of the issues surrounding its release, plus a discussion of what might have been.
We’re joined once again by guests Craig Carson and Myles Griffin, both of whom were passionate enough about this film to get it a nomination for the Psychotronic Canon!
Wait, the Psychotronic Canon, you say? Not the Hall of Fame? That’s right, this week marks what could be considered a bit of a reboot of this podcast, or at least a slight restructuring. It’ll all be explained in this week’s ONE SHOT episode, so be sure to check that one out so you’ll know the state of the podcast going forward!

Ep. 149 — THE FACULTY (1998)
Cinema Shock
10/17/19 • 61 min
For the month of October, we're celebrating Halloween the only way we know how: by watching a whole bunch of horror movies! Specifically, this October, we're taking a look at a small piece of horror film history by diving into the post-SCREAM teen horror revival of the late 90s and early 00s!
Our next entry: Robert Rodriguez’s THE FACULTY!
Hoping to cash in on the success of SCREAM, Dimension Films (who’d released that movie) began work on a new horror film, this one an homage to classic sci-fi horror such as INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and THE THING. Hoping to bring a bit of self-awareness to it a la SCREAM, Dimension hired that film’s screenwriter Kevin Williamson, hoping to strike gold again.
We’ll get into all the details on how that came about, including how Dimension talked the film’s original writers into giving away their credit, and how Robert Rodriguez — hot off the success of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN — came to direct the film.
And this week, we’re also nominating the film for the Psychotronic Hall of Fame!

Our second entry in this series is URBAN LEGEND, and we’re joined on this episode by guests Craig Carson and Myles Griffin!
Released only a year and a half into he new slasher movie craze, URBAN LEGEND attempted to capitalize on the success of SCREAM by creating another self-aware horror flick, this one steeped in the lore of famous urban legends instead of horror movie tropes. Was it successful?
From an artistic point, that’s for the audience to decide, but from a financial point? Yeah, it made a boatload of money, thus ensuring that this new slasher trend would continue.
In this episode, we’ll dive into the creation of the film and discuss its ongoing reputation as a late era slasher flick.

Ep. 147 — I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997)
Cinema Shock
10/03/19 • 63 min
For the month of October, we're celebrating Halloween the only way we know how: by watching a whole bunch of horror movies! Specifically, this October, we're taking a look at a small piece of horror film history by diving into the post-SCREAM teen horror revival of the late 90s and early 00s!
To kick things off, we're discussing the one film that was probably the most direct result of SCREAM's success, 1997's I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER!
Written by SCREAM's Kevin Williamson and rushed before camera's in order to capitalize on the success of Wes Craven's film, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER is the epitome of late-90s teen horror, for better or for worse.
On this episode, we'll discuss how Williamson's success lead to one of his earlier scripts (itself an adaptation of a young adult novel by Lois Duncan) being taken off the shelf and turned into one of the most successful films to be released in SCREAM's wake, cementing the idea that the slasher revival was fully in effect.

PFS Rewind: SCREAM (1996)
Cinema Shock
10/02/19 • 64 min
For the month of October, we're celebrating Halloween the only way we know how: by watching a whole bunch of horror movies! Specifically, this October, we're taking a look at a small piece of horror film history by diving into the post-SCREAM teen horror revival of the late 90s and early 00s!
But first... How's about a little refresher? Way back in the very, very, very early days of this podcast, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of Wes Craven's SCREAM by discussing it on the show. So to gear you up for this new series, we're reposting that episode in all of its glory!
Now, please keep in mind, we'd only been doing this podcast for a couple of months at the time (this was episode eight!) so we hadn't quite got the rhythm or the format down for the series yet, so we can't really guarantee that the quality (both from a content and technical point of view) is what you've come to expect from the show, but we're giving this to you anyway, despite how embarrassing it might be for us to go back and listen to. Ya know, for posterity!
Come back in a couple more days for the first official entry into our TEEN SCREAMS series, with I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER!

One Shot: RAMBO: LAST BLOOD (2019) Review
Cinema Shock
09/30/19 • 47 min
We recently wrapped up a month-long discussion of the entire RAMBO franchise to date, but we couldn't let Rambo Month go by without discussion the film that served as its inspiration.
RAMBO: LAST BLOOD, Sylvester Stallone's fifth outing as John Rambo, was recently released to theaters to less-than-stellar reviews. But if you're wondering what our hosts Gary and Justin think of it, you're in luck!
In this review, we give our general thoughts on the film before delving into spoiler territory about halfway through (don't worry; there's plenty of warning).

Ep. 146 — RAMBO (2008)
Cinema Shock
09/26/19 • 83 min
To celebrate the release of the fifth Rambo film, RAMBO: LAST BLOOD on September 20th, we're spending the entire month of September celebrating one of the most iconic characters of 80s action cinema, Psychotronic icon John Rambo, by working our way through the entire RAMBO franchise, one film at a time.
This week, we're taking a look at what was thought to be, at the time, the fourth and final John Rambo adventure, 2008's RAMBO!
After being absent from the screen for two decades, John Rambo made his triumphant return to the big screen in this fascinating and ultra-violent outing, this time directed by Sylvester Stallone himself.
On this episode, we'll discuss the origins of this story, which sees Rambo taking on pretty much the entire Burmese military in Stallone's attempt to shine a spotlight on the real life atrocities being committed in that corner of the world.
Whether he's successful in doing so is up to the viewer, and that's another part of the discussion we'll get into, as well as the movie's somewhat muddled views on the necessity of violence.
While this episode officially concludes our Rambo series, be on the lookout for a One Shot in the next few days in which we give a quick review of the fifth (and final?) film in the series, the newly-released RAMBO: LAST BLOOD!

Ep. 145 — RAMBO III (1988)
Cinema Shock
09/20/19 • 56 min
To celebrate the release of the fifth Rambo film, RAMBO: LAST BLOOD on September 20th, we're spending the entire month of September celebrating one of the most iconic characters of 80s action cinema, Psychotronic icon John Rambo, by working our way through the entire RAMBO franchise, one film at a time.
This week, the third film in the series, RAMBO III (1988).
In FIRST BLOOD PART II, John Rambo had transformed from the PTSD-addled Vietnam vet to an icon of Reagan-era American patriotism, but it's RAMBO III that really solidified him as a straight-up American superhero.
Between those two films, Rambo had been given his own Saturday morning cartoon, and in his third outing, he pretty much personifies a cartoon brought to life. Gone is the haunted man that he began as in the original FIRST BLOOD.
In this episode, we'll discuss that transformation and we'll track RAMBO III's tumultuous journey to the big screen in which crew changes — including the director — and difficult shooting locations contributed to what would become, at the time, the most expensive film ever made.
Since RAMBO III appears in The Sacred Texts (aka Michael J. Weldon's Psychotronic Video Guide), it gets an automatic nomination for the Psychotronic Hall of Fame. Vote in our poll to let us know if you think it deserves to go in!

Ep. 151 — VALENTINE (2001)
Cinema Shock
10/31/19 • 66 min
“To paraphrase Pauline Kael, the movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash, there is no reason to go. I'd draw a distinction, however, between the classic horror genre, which has produced masterpieces from NOSFERATUto SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, and the Dead Teenager Movie, which I define as a movie that starts out with a lot of teenagers, and kills them all, except one to populate the sequel.” —Roger Ebert
