There has been a lot of controversy around Netflix and whether the streamer should or should not release its top-budgeted movies theatrically and if those movies should be considered for Oscar attention. To survive, Netflix must acknowledge that the theatrical experience is not going anywhere and they need to grab onto that experience in order to keep them afloat.

Cinema Gold Show - The Batman Spoiler-Free Review
play

03/05/22 • 10 min

The Batman stands on its own, but it’s still dripping with cinematic references. Among the movies I thought about while watching: Zodiac, Se7en, Chinatown, and Saw! You know what I didn’t think too much about? Most of the previous live-action Batman movies. Its gritty realism is most similar to Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, but this is a refreshingly bold new cinematic take on the Dark Knight.

Cinema Gold Show - I Know You Know: Psych The Movie Review
play

12/02/21 • 9 min

This week we continue our series I Know You Know with a review of Psych The Movie. The first of three movies that came out of the success of USA Network's hit show Psych!

Psych: The Movie is lively and lightweight, buoyed by Roday and Hill’s bond, which hasn’t diminished at all in the last three years. Its structure is classic Psych, with mystery assailants, a break-in or two, a little self-reflection, and rapid-fire pop culture references to make up for their absence. Roday has called the movie a “love letter” to the fans, and it is definitely an enjoyable continuation of the original series.

Virtually all the main and recurring players, including Timothy Omundson, who’s recovering from a stroke, are worked into the story, which centers on Juliet (Maggie Lawson). The San Francisco cop has been targeted by the Thin White Duke (Zachary Levi) and his goons, including WWE star Charlotte Flair. The antagonists threaten to spoil not just Christmas, but possibly even Shawn and Juliet’s engagement, which remains jewelry-free.

Cinema Gold Show - Netflix Roulette: Without a Paddle Review
play

04/22/22 • 8 min

Welcome to another week of Netflix Roulette, where we pick a movie at random available on Netflix. This week we give our review of Without a Paddle. Want to know why Paramount Pictures is struggling? Watch Without a Paddle and you'll gain some insight. At least the film understands what it is, as is indicated by the steaming pile of excrement that appears 2/3 of the way through the proceedings. By then, we don't really need the clue, but it's appreciated. About the only way to make things worse would have been to add Tom Green to the cast.

The third episode of Marvel’s Moon Knight, “The Friendly Type”, winds up feeling like a puzzle-solving diversion for the most part, and that’s a bit frustrating considering there are only six of these bad boys in total and we’re halfway through them by the end of it, but we do get to learn some key information about Marc Spector and Layla El-Faouly during the events that play out, so it’s not a total loss.

Cinema Gold Show - Netflix Roulette: Margin Call
play

04/02/22 • 8 min

This week on Netflix Roulette, we are giving our review of the underrated film Margin Call. Watching this astounded me that it was J.C. Chandor’s first film. Everything about it screams “veteran work”. The script is tight and interesting, despite the fact that I could not care less about Wall Street. This isn’t a film that’s going to try to get you to feel emotion for the Wall Street suits, but it will try to make you understand why they do what they do. In the end, it’s easy to understand - greed - and it makes no attempt to disguise that.

Cinema Gold Show - Netflix Roulette: 6 Underground
play

04/30/22 • 8 min

Here we are with another episode of Netflix Roulette, this week we dive into possibly Michael Bay's worst films "6 Underground," starring Ryan Reynolds. 6 Underground is cartoonishly raucous explosion porn from mayhem maestro Michael Bay that feels like a film that was made over a decade ago and was just somehow recently unearthed by Netflix. It's a testament to star Ryan Reynolds and his seemingly effortless charisma because without him the movie would have been a snow-blind mess.
