Cinema Cemetery - Cinema Cemetery Episode 19: The Lost Weekend (1945)
play

05/29/20 • 35 min

This week Cinema Cemetery kicks off this pre-summer weekend by exploring a far bleaker one. 1945’s The Lost Weekend explores the life of Don Birnam as he bounces from bottle to bar on a 48 hour+ bender. Birnam’s conversations and flashbacks reveal his lifelong battle and goals of writing a novel, all while struggling with the virtual prison of his own addiction. At the time, and even today, this film is an unflinching look at the power of addiction and its effect on all involved. Will Cinema Cemetery recommend this film for your weekend? Find out here!

As our Oscar Journey moves along, the first Bio-Pic arrives with 1936's The Great Ziegfeld. Following the highly stylized retelling of Flo Ziegfeld's life, this three-hour epic follows the eponymous character from his early days as a showman to the biggest name on Broadway.
Will it be the Ziegfeld Follies, or a Folly to watch Ziegfeld? Find out on this week's Cinema Cemetery!

“Sol: a needle pulling thread. La: a...uh...note to follow sol.” It’s not always Shakespeare, but The Sound of Music keeps the lyrical tradition going with this 1965 musical. Starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, this somewhat true story tells the tale of young Maria, a failing nun-candidate charged with bringing order to an Austrian Captain’s household (seven children and all) as war looms in Europe. Part comedy, part wartime drama, and all classic musical, this iconic movie continues to serve as the mark by which most other film musicals are measured. Does it deserve the praise? Find out this week on Cinema Cemetery.

“It always works out?” “Why?” “I don’t know; it’s a mystery.” A play-within-a-play, or rather a play-beyond-a-play, Shakespeare in Love tells the fictional tale of the writing of another fictional tale as a young, upstart Shakespeare struggles to create a new comedy all while living a real-life romance/tragedy in the real world. With an all-star 1990s cast, and copious Shakespeare references and Easter eggs, Shakespeare in Love combines the forbidden love with a Finnes brother from English Patient with the star-crossed lovers of Titanic, all mixed with a Victorian setting. Largely seen as a surprise in 1998, has Shakespeare proved to be a show for all time? Find out today!
