Cine-Lit - When Musicians Act
play

For this episode of Cine-Lit, Adam and Darrell are joined by Rob Lane of the Straight To Video podcast (and an actual musician!) to talk about some of the best (and worst) examples of musicians attempting the crossover into acting.

Adam and Darrell reunite for another Cine-Lit podcast this time looking into the work of a director that maybe not so many people are aware of.

Inspired by Adam's comment that "There is always something to enjoy in a Brian Trenchard-Smith film." They are exploring the work of director Brian Trenchard-Smith, pioneer of the Ozploitation boom of filmmaking in Australia in the 1970s and 1980s. In a career that comprises of action, drama, kung fu, family films, science-fiction, horror, thrillers and any other genre you can named, Trenchard-Smith has done it all in his over 50 year career. Focusing on five films from his filmography, Adam and Darrell discuss the merits of The Man From Hong Kong (1975), Stunt Rock (1978), Turkey Shoot (1981), BMX Bandits (1983) and Dead End Drive In (1986) and how these films encapsulate the career of BTS.

09/06/22 • 60 min

The End Is Nigh! Well, for Cine-Lit it is at least. And of course, with a great movie ending, there is always the possibility of a great movie resurrection...

Alfred Hitchcock made some of the most well-respected films of all time, Vertigo currently tops the Sight and Sound list of the 100 Greatest Films of All Time but what about some of Hitch's lesser works? Adam and Darrell take a look at two films shot and released during a particularly purple patch for the director. In the midst of films like Rear Window, Vertigo, North By Northwest and Psycho, these two films seem to stand out like criminals in an identity parade. One is a black comedy while the other is based on a true story and leans heavily into film noir. Join us as we talk about Harry and Manny in The Trouble With Harry (1955) and The Wrong Man (1956).

Cine-Lit - MacGuffin!

MacGuffin!

Cine-Lit

play

07/19/22 • 49 min

It is a term that is bandied about by part-time film lecturers and self-styled academics, but what is it? A term popularised by Alfred Hitchcock, the MacGuffin is the sometime incidental 'thing' that the characters in a film desire, need or are in search of. Adam and Darrell put aside their quest for the Maltese Falcon and run down the 39 steps to get to the bottom of the legendary MacGuffin.
