Cincy Brewcast - It's Time To Visit Cincy Brewing Company
play

On one hand, I get upset with myself when it takes me this long to get out to a local brewery to help them share their story with you. It drives me crazy. On the other hand, it feels so flippin' good to finally get out there - that I almost forget about how crazy it makes me. The folks over at Cincy Brewing Company have been on my "need to record list" for far too long - but my lord am I glad to finally get out there. Their beer is better than ever, they are starting to really figure out who they are - and the taproom is finding it's place in this bigger community in a really fun way. I dig this one, a lot. We talked about how they got started, who they are, and about what they're brewing. We even dove into the big question of "how big is too big" for a place like Cincy Brewing Company. It's a long, fun show! Guests This Episode Rob Rosen - Cincy Brewing CompanyBrian Ross - Cincy Brewing Company From The Beer Fridge Cincy Brewing Company - 4 LocksCincy Brewing Company - Branch Hill BenderCincy Brewing Company - EzzCincy Brewing Company - Lincoln HeightsCincy Brewing Company - Mad AnthonyCincy Brewing Company - The ValleyCincy Brewing Company - Wright Stuff Also - I have to give a massive, massive shoutout to this months sponsors of the show: Chef Tony over at FoodTrucker Magazine - he's also with the Queen City Mobile Food Truck Association. It covers two sides of the food truck world. If you have a food truck or are just nerdy about the behind-the-scenes "stuff" that it takes to run one - check out Food Trucker Magazine. If you're looking for a food truck, though - Queen City Mobile Food Truck Association is the place to go. This organization can find the best truck for your taproom, event, or whatever you need a truck for. They're great people, doing great work!Bret Kollmann Baker over at Urban Artifact. Bret's a great dude, and his brewery is cranking out some of the most fun, innovative beer in this city (and well beyond). They've got an online store that you should check out - especially since they'll ship it right to your doorstep (depending on where you live. These folks are sponsors... they make this happen. You can help too, though. If you want to dedicate a few bucks each month to the Brewcast, to the website, the YouTube channel... all of that. You can always hit up the support page and do just that. It helps... it helps a lot!

What a whirlwind of a show! It seems extremely appropriate that right after discussing how Cincinnati can become more of a draw for beer-tourism that the city should win an exclusive party from Untappd. If you missed the post about the event the important stuff you need to know is that in the month of March our city was one of the top 7 cities for Untappd check-ins. Digging a little deeper into that, MadTree was the top checked in verified venue in the city which is why the party was held there. We were joined with an all star panel for the show, Christopher Walker from Have a Drink Show (you know them by now, right?) helped me keep the show running by co-hosting, and Mike Stuart from MadTree joined Greg Avola from Untappd to help us on the content side with a great interview. We talked about Untappd, what makes it work, where it's come from, and where it's going along with digging into a couple of the most heated debates about the platform (let's settle those vintage arguments finally). With the Brew Professor himself at the table it only Made sense to chat about this mysterious Sensorium series that the brewery has been teasing lately. In a world where Untappd reins supreme for beer check ins (with all the good and bad that comes with that) it was fun to have a brewery's voice there as well to show their side of what the app does for them. It was a great show... make sure that you not only listen and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, or Google Play - but for the love of beer, share the show with your friends too! Let's keep this thing growing! There is a lot of fun stuff in the works, and I don't want anyone to miss out! Cincy Brewcast - First Anniversary Show!
play

04/05/16 • 85 min

It's a first anniversary party on Cincy Brewcast! No, not ours, but three of the newest and fastest growing craft breweries in Cincinnati. First, we visit and do our show on location at Urban Artifact Brewery in Northside, where we are joined by co-founders Bret Kollman-Baker and Scotty Hunter. They discuss UA's first year in business and their upcoming First Anniversary party at the brewery on April 23. They will be having special beers, bands, food trucks and much more. Then, we revisit the big Anniversary party at Braxton Brewing Company last week--we talk to Jake and Evan Rouse, Richard Dube, Jonathan Gandolf, Dave Dixon and Lisa Graham, whose Brewhaus Dog Bones educational program received the inaugural "Trophy" Grant from Braxton. Finally, we sit down for a one-on-one interview with Kevin Moreland of Taft's Ale House on their busiest day--Reds Opening Day also is the day Taft's opened last year--so they obviously host a mega-party! Kevin talks about the year that was for Taft's, the fine "liquids" that come out of the old church on Race Street and what Taft's means to the OTR community--and vice versa. So sit back, relax, crack open a cold one, and enjoy this all-new episode of Cincy Brewcast, "The Voice of Cincy Craft"!

Cincy Brewcast - On Location From 50 West-ville with Blake And Bobby
play

03/29/16 • 95 min

Our second year of Cincy Brewcast begins with an excellent episode where we finally meet with the guys from 50 West Brewing Co. Co-owners, Head Brewer Blake Horsburgh and CEO Bobby Slattery sit down and talk about all things 50 West--their brewing philosophy, the quest for excellence in both experience and product, their planned expansion to increase production for both distribution and package and so much more. There are, of course, several great beers involved, including the "State Lines" American-style lager (an in-house controversy, we were told) the "Done in a Day" DIPA, one of the best Double IPA's ever issued from a Cincinnati brewery and a new variant of their hyper-popular "Coffee Please" Stout--this time with Mexican Churro flavorings. There is also some "Asked and Answered" action, courtesy this week of Tina where she asks Blake and Bobby pressing questions that you wanted to ask--and maybe some stuff you didn't need to know about Blake, Bobby, Tina and Angie's days at Ohio University! So join us for this extra-fun and exciting edition of Cincy Brewcast, "The Voice of Cincy Craft."

Cincy Brewcast - Missing Linck Returns With A Vengance
play

06/07/21 • 59 min

This idea is a little strange, yet, that's a big reason why I love it as much as I do! Urban Artifact discovered a little bit of living brewers yeast, deep underground in a lagering tunnel where the F &JA Linck brewery used to exist more than a hundred years ago. They took that yeast, named it, and made a beer with it. That idea has birthed an entire festival called Missing Linck Fest, in which the team invites breweries from all over to try their hand at it, create a beer using this yeast and to see what happens. It's literally a way for every brewery to try their hand at tapping into the past. We talked about Missing Linck a couple of years ago on the show - back when they thought they were launching the festival... but because of the "stuff" last year - it didn't quite happen as planned. This year still isn't back to normal, yet, but the festival has arrived. On this episode we drink the beer, and talk about what it means and what the festival is all about. Of course - we head right down a couple rabbit holes, as I've learned it's pretty easy to get myself distracted when a great beer is in my hand. Great time? Yeah... it was a great time. There are a lot of different breweries in 2025, and while the industry has plenty of struggles, there is one model that stands above everything else – the neighborhood taproom. This is exactly where the upcoming Depot Brewing Company hopes to align itself. They’re planning a small brewery and taproom for the community of Morrow, Ohio, and from everything I can tell, it’s going to be great.

I sat down with owner Scott Tilford and head brewer Taylor Dent at their soon-to-be neighbors, Cartridge Brewing, to have a few beers and really explore how they’re planning on making it all happen.

It’s a great episode, and one that I hope will get you as excited as I am about this place opening its doors.

If you want to stay up to date on Depot and their plans, make sure you follow along on their website, their Facebook Page, and their Instagram account – things are going to start moving along very quickly, now!

Don’t forget that this show is brought to you by folks just like yourself. If you like what I do and want to support (and get early access to all the episodes, you can head to www.TheGnarlyGnome.com/support to become a Gnomie!
