Saint Magdalene of Canossa was born in 18th century Verona, Italy from an aristocratic family. She desired to pursue Christ rather than enjoying her life of wealthy privilege. However, she felt also that the cloistered life was not for her, since she felt called to charity to the poor and evangelism. She thus founded the order of Canossian daughters of charity, an order that exists and thrives today.

Christian Saints Podcast - Saint Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi

10/02/21 • 30 min

Saint Francis of Assisi is one of the most revered Saints in Western Christianity. He was born in 1181 or 1182, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. Receiving visions from God, he instead pursued a life of following Christ through poverty, renouncing his familial wealth. He founded the Order of Friars Minor, also known as the Franciscan Friars, and he and his followers were known for their preaching, their strict vows of poverty, and their dedication to Jesus Christ. Saint Francis traveled to the Holy Land and preached to the Sultan of Egypt, at a time when Christians and Muslims were at war. Near the end of his life, he also received the wounds of Christ's crucifixion upon his body - the stigmata.

Christian Saints Podcast - The Virgin Mary (repeat)

The Virgin Mary (repeat)

Christian Saints Podcast

play

12/17/22 • 26 min

We will play a repeat episode, since I was off on a prayer retreat last weekend. In this season of advent, let us reflect on the crucial role of the Virgin Mary.
***
For this episode we venerate Mary, the greatest of all the saints. We consider some of the titles given to her from across the Christian tradition: Theotokos, Mother of God, Joy of All who Sorrow, Cause of our Salvation, Mother of the Church. We study how those titles reflect Mary's role in our Christian faith, and how she directs us toward Christ.
The readings covered in this episode include the account of the Annunciation in the gospel of Luke (Luke 1: 26-38), the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), the gospel of John's account of the wedding at Cana (John 2:1-11), the Angelus prayer. We also refer extensively to Sister Grace Remington's painting of Mary and Eve.

No new episode this week, instead we have a rerun of an old episode from 2020, about Saint Nicholas of Myra:
***
Saint Nicholas of Myra (270 AD-343 AD) , also known as Saint Nicholas the wonderworker, is one of the most beloved Saints in the Christian tradition. Even among non-Christians, he is well-known as the inspiration for Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas is famed for his generosity. When his parents died young he gave away his sizable inheritance to the poor. He also gave gold in secret to three young girls whose family was suffering from abject poverty, saving them from a life of prostitution. He also performed many spectacular miracles, and was an ardent opponent of the Arian heresy. In this episode, we contemplate the story of Saint Nicholas, and read extensively from the Life of Saint Nicholas by Archimandrite Michael.
