Living a life of freedom, where you are forced to trust God for your sense of self, your worth, and your future can be exhilarating. Like that first time riding a bike without training wheels, it's a rush. But, if you're not familiar with that feeling, you instinctively hit the brakes and put your feet out.
Sometimes, people come along and offer us deals, techniques, rules to follow, or tribes to join that promise to put us in control of our spiritual lives. But as Phil reflects on in this sermon, so often, these deals sideline Jesus, and cost us our freedom.

Every single day there are thousands of voices telling us who we are, what we are for, what to do, and where to go. In such a cacophony it can be hard to figure out who we really are. Is there some way to mute all these voices? And what might Jesus have to say about it all? In this sermon, Phil explores how in the gospel, God speaks to us with an invitation to become something that fulfills our deepest longings.

Christ Church Hawker sermons - More righteous than righteous | Matthew 5:17-25

What if simply getting angry could put you in the same danger as murder? What if someone a fool could make you guilty before God? Sounds extreme, right? But in Matthew 5:17-26, Jesus raises the bar on righteousness—way higher than we’d expect.

Jesus said, "Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” The Pharisees were the most devout rule-followers of their time—so what hope do we have?

Here’s the game-changer: Jesus didn’t come to abolish the law but to fulfil it. The righteousness we need isn’t something we achieve—it’s something we receive. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus gives us His perfect righteousness. It’s not about religious performance; it’s about grace.

In this sermon, Paul Sampson explores what all this means for us today.

We in the West don't do honour and shame, we're a guilt and innocence culture. Or so we've been told. It seems like common sense until we take a look at how much time we spend chasing likes, retweets, and even just kudos from the people around us. Many of us care about what other people think of us, and we know that this can be a trap.

So, the answer is simple right? Just stop caring what other people think, right? Give up on the whole honour/shame game and be free to live your life dancing like nobody's watching. Except that if you do that, chances are you'll go viral for all the wrong reasons.

It turns out Jesus has a better answer, a way for us to find the honour we seek, and to leave behind the shame we carry. And it's all about following his path. Join us as Laura explains how to beat the honour trap by finding our honour in Jesus.

Community is something we all need, and yet as so many people have observed, we are increasingly struggling to get it. How do we find a way to live with each other? And where does community fit into a spiritually fulfilling life? In this sermon, Phil looks at Paul's letter to the Galatians churches and argues that the life of the Holy Spirit only happens with other Christians.

Welcome to today’s episode, where we dive into one of Jesus’ most radical teachings from the Sermon on the Mount—his call to peace in the face of conflict.

We all experience conflict—at home, at work, online. The natural response? Fight back or walk away. But Jesus offers a third way: a path of honesty, dignity, and grace that transforms relationships and communities.

We explore:

🔹 Showing your hand – Jesus calls us to be truthful in our words and motives (Matthew 5:33-37). Honesty builds trust and prevents manipulation.

🔹 Raising your head – When mistreated, Jesus doesn’t tell us to cower or retaliate. Instead, he calls us to stand firm, refusing to be degraded while rejecting revenge (Matthew 5:38-40).

🔹 Redefining your friends – More than just passive resistance, Jesus teaches us to actively reclaim power through unexpected generosity and love, even for our enemies (Matthew 5:41-48).

We also look at real-life examples, including the civil rights movement, and how we can live out these principles today—in our workplaces, families, and daily interactions.

Jesus' way of peace is active, creative, and powerful.
