In an unprecedented era of technology use in choral music, I was curious: how has technology influenced the history of choral music? I knew insight could be found from none other than the god of choral repertoire himself, Dr. Dennis Shrock.
As a graduate student in choral conducting his Choral Repertoire book served as our bible for three semesters of choral literature. I poured over the many pages of his scholarship looking for insight into what the best choice would be when I was trying to determine what music to select for my graduate lecture recital. Admittedly, this was the most intimidated I have ever been for an interview. I am the farthest thing from a choral literature savant. And yet, I had to know what this man thought on this subject.
I am delighted to share this interview with you. We not only talk about technology in choral music and how it's benefitted his research and writing, we gain valuable insight into his process. You'll be moved by his story. You'll be reminded of the power and influence a teacher can have on the lives of their students. You'll be inspired to listen to new music and to try your hand at arranging. And you'll also have a greater sense of appreciation for writing literature.
Thank you, Dr. Shrock for this wonderful interview.

31. "Because choir is greater than the sum of its parts" an interview with Joan Riddle Steinmann
Choir Baton
03/27/20 • 49 min
On March 18, Joan made a blog post in response to the emotions she felt surrounding the choir community's various responses to having to "do choir" online amidst Covid-19. That post would quickly go viral and be shared time again by the choir community. Joan's words seemed to stir within our hearts what many of us could not find the words to express. After being so moved by her text and seeing others so moved by it, I felt like there was more to the story and wanted to know more about the woman behind the post. The following interview is a moving addendum. Joan shares her heart for music and how the days leading up to her post were filled with another powerful journey. This post was her first one, made on her newly created webpage to share about her work on a musical written in tribute to her students and inspired by the role education plays in our students lives today. In a unique twist Joan also shares how her composition has garned praise from Malcolm Gladwell. You will be moved and inspired no longer just from the powerful words Joan shared with the world, but by gaining a glimpse into the creative, engaging, and wise woman behind that text. To find out more about Joan, including her blog post and upcoming musical "Solve for X" please click here

If you follow online choir content, chances are you've heard the name Adam Paltrowitz and/ or Choral Clarity. Adam sat down with me to elaborate further on the mantra of Choir Baton: #morepeoplesinging and how it fits directly into his work as at Choral Clarity.
If you've ever read Adam's posts or wonder why more people aren't singing after their school choir experiences, this episode will give you a greater perspective on why and how we can change that.
Adam Paltrowitz is a master educator, composer, conductor, and clinician.
What makes his choirs unique is his belief that anyone can sing; as a result, his ensembles are always self-selected, while maintaining the highest standard of musical excellence. He also has pioneered a philosophy that every student is a soloist. All students in his choirs continually learn and perform solo repertoire in various languages. Adam's choral program has also gained great acclaim for the cultivation of eight student-run a-cappella ensembles; some of these ensembles have performed on national and local television programs.
During his 21-year tenure as the Director of Choral Activities at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School in New York, his groups have toured throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States. Adam earned his B.S. in music education from New York University, M.A. in vocal pedagogy from Columbia University - Teacher's College, and Ed.M. choral conducting from Columbia University - Teacher's College.
His weekly blog, Choral Clarity, has gained a large international audience as it provides a unique perspective to both the role of the choral director and the empowerment of all students.
His choral compositions and arrangements have been performed by choirs around the world; many are available on his Choral Clarity instant download platform.
Please join the Choral Clarity Facebook Group for an interactive and introspective conversation about finding our own choral vision.
Adam resides in Manhattan with his wife, Blair Goldberg, a professional Broadway actress, and their daughter, Lyla, and son, Nolan.

This week I’m joined by Chris Munce, podcast host of @choralosophy. This episode highlights our “why” of podcasting in the realm of choral music and so much more. You’ll learn about Chris’s teaching journey to his current school and more on why I’m passionate about showing up in both choir and business. Chris tricks me on the old economics pizza analogy and I learn that his dad has a great beach house in Florida that one day we might be lucky enough to be invited to. I think you’ll find that while different, we’re both serious about not taking ourselves too seriously, while also seeking to grow the world of choral music and conversations around it.
Chris Munce is an accomplished choral performer, conductor, educator, clinician and arts administrator. As a performer he is a member of Kantorei KC, as well as the founder and Artistic Director. Under Mr. Munce’s direction, Kantorei has recorded and published three albums. The Kansas City Star praised “Music and Sweet Poetry” for its “lush and full bodied sound...gorgeous singing” and The Observer (London) called “To Bethlehem” one of the best Choral albums of the year and “the most interesting festive album.” He has also performed with the Simon Carrington Chamber Singers, and the Grammy Winning Kansas City Chorale. Chris was fortunate to be a part of the Chorale’s Grammy Nominated album, “Rheinberger: Sacred Choral Works.”
Chris received a Bachelor’s of Music Education and a Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting from the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance. His graduate research focus was the performance practice of early Baroque choral singing in the French and Italian styles. Chris has studied with Eph Eely, Charles Robinson, Ryan Board, William Dehning, Peter Bagley and Jerry McCoy. He also served as adjunct faculty at the Conservatory teaching choral arranging, and at Blue River Community College as a professor of voice.
At Lee’s Summit High, Mr. Munce has lead his choirs to performances at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, the Missouri Music Educators Convention, Alice Tulley Hall at Lincoln Center and on a Masterclass with the multiple Grammy Award winning vocal group Chanticleer. He has been an active private voice instructor since 1999. Chris is married to Beth, a soprano and voice teacher. They live in Lee’s Summit, Missouri with their two children, Clara (10) and Colin (7).

What happens when you're a student teaching mentor/ cooperating teacher and you yourself never student taught? This is high school choral director Peter Haley's situation at East Gaston High School where he uses his experience to shape the student teaching time of his students in a way he never had because his journey to public music education came after time as a full time church music minister.
Peter served as Nyi Nyi's student teaching advisor and shares how he came to teaching and ways he partnered with University supervisors to ensure he was providing effective mentorship to Nyi Nyi in order for every person in the East Gaston High School choral rehearsal to learn and grow.

Dr. Shreyas Patel’s story of life and music is unlike any you’ve heard before. How do you balance a love for family with a love for making music? How you honor the sacrifices your parents have made for you while discovering who you are and who you want to be? Shreyas’ journey winds through the hallowed halls of England’s cathedrals, the path of immigration, a passion for music making instilled in a California high school classroom, and the expectation to go into the medical field. This interview will inspire you; for no matter your path to or through singing, music making can always be a part of your life.
Shreyas Patel, bass-baritone, is on faculty at Hillsboro High School, in Nashville, TN, serving as instructional dean and coordinator of professional development and teaching International Baccalaureate (IB) Sports, Exercise and Health Science, Medical Anatomy and Physiology, and IB Biology. He has performed nationally with professional ensembles and maintains a busy concert schedule within the greater Nashville community and the national choral circuit. Anyone else get as excited as I do when you hear choral music in mainstream media? When Coldplay released their 2019 album Everyday Life, I was captivated by the song "When I Need a Friend." Fast forward several months and I was lucky enough to sit down with Ben Parry, conductor of that track sung by London Voices. Ben is a conductor, composer, arranger, singer and producer. Former member of the Swingle Singers (his daughter now sings with the ensemble) and collaborator with hundreds of choral and "light music" projects, Ben is a world-renown musician who continues to make music for a variety of different age groups and experiences in a variety of different styles. In addition to his work with London Voices, Ben is the Assistant Director of Music and Bye-Fellow of King's College, Cambridge, and the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. He has made well over 100 CD recordings and his compositions and arrangements are published by Oxford University Press, Peters Edition and Faber Music. His latest album: The Hours just released and is available to listen here. #MorePeopleSinging
