Chinese Chippy Girl

Chinese Chippy Girl

Chinese Chippy Girl

Award winning podcast* 🥈. Talking about life as a British born Chinese (BBC)/British Asian. The struggles that I've had to deal with whilst growing up in my mum and dad's takeaway in the 1980s/1990s. My parents are immigrants from HK/China and moved to the UK when they were teenagers. I was brought up being Chinese at home and English when I was outside of home - it felt confusing at the time as I couldn't find a sense of belonging. But now I am much older, I am proud of my Chinese heritage and I am proud to be British. I just want to share my story with people.* Silver award at British Podcast Awards 2022 in 'Moment of the Year' category.

Chinese Malaysian born, Kelvin Tan - no doubt one of my favourite chefs of all time and a Sous Chef at 2 Michelin star restaurant, Sat Bains. We talk about his story, of how he became a chef and his desire to learn how to cook Chinese food as inspired by his Dad #PapaTan. Speaking of which, he tells us the background of how his Dad met his mum and when they moved over to Ireland. Give Kelvin a follow on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kelvintanwc - but be warned, his page will leave you drooling with all the food porn.
I've also snuck in a small solo clip of themahjongline news. More people trying to white wash the Chinese culture. People should just leave our traditions alone and respect it. Our culture doesn't need refining and it never will.

In this episode, Christina (my sister) and I talk about our family upbringing. We also compare notes on how we raise our own children as 2nd generation BBC (British born Chinese) and how we balance out the cultural identities to make sure we carry both the British and Asian culture.
We also talk about my mum who lived with my sister for 10 years and how that's the 'norm' in Asian culture. And why do Asian Aunties feel the need to body-shame us?
Listen to find out more.

🥟 I'm delighted to introduce fellow BBC Yee onto this episode. Co-Founder of one of the best places to eat dumplings... DUMPLING SHACK. I'm such a fan girl and I still can't believe I managed to speak with Yee. Dumpling Shack started off their street food stall in Broadway Market in 2014 selling pan fried dumplings (aka shengjianbaos) and now they're one of the most successful Chinese food stalls in East London. I still remember the soup bursting with flavour in my mouth with my first bite 🤤. In this episode, we talk about our time working with our parents at the Chinese takeaway, whether Yee would open a Chinese bakery shop in East London 🤔, how she met her husband John (Boss man) and their Chinese wedding ceremony (covid style). If you're in London, go and check out Dumpling Shack (and their cute bro Fen Noodles) at Spitalfields Market and the new Dumpling Shack in South Quay. Give them a follow on insta https://www.instagram.com/dumplingshack/

A fellow BBC (British born Chinese), Chop_Stick_N_Poke joins me in this episode. A very talented illustrator who designed my Chinese Chippy Girl artwork cover for my pod and Insta page. Her page beautifully illustrates Chinese culture such as cha chaan teng (greasy spoons in East Asia), fruit markets in Hong Kong, white rabbit sweets (remember those????) and so much more. We also talk about growing up with racism, our chippy days, more racism, our siblings who are doctors and whether she prefers Jamie Oliver or Ken Hom. Please follow her for some Chinese nostalgia www.instagram.com/chop_stick_n_poke. Hope you enjoy this pod 🎙

🧧Happy Lunar New Year to everyone. In this episode I speak to Wai Kuen from Pak Mei Lo Hau Martial Arts Association. I have been following these guys since I started podcasting and I've been so fascinated in lion dancing and the story of why it's used during Chinese celebrations. For people who know me, you will know that I have a billion questions - and I had a billion questions on this topic. So thank goodness Wai Kuen was here to answer them all.
Thank you Wai Kuen for coming on the show. It was so amazing to hear the history of lion dancing and listening to how your addiction for lion dancing started at such a young age.
Anyone new to my shows. I have an instagram page too - check it out Chinese Chippy Girl. Gimme a follow, gimme some comments, leave me a message, spread the word, leave me a review on Apple pod (if you're listening on that). JUST TELL EVERYONE TO LISTEN YEAH!!💜

Chinese Chippy Girl - S1 Ep10: #ESEAeats - our story with Anna Chan
play

12/13/20 • 58 min

Featuring my takeaway sister from another Mister! We speak about the story of the campaign we created to share and celebrate ESEA (East and South East Asian) food culture. We're not foodies (well not me anyway)! But we're proud of the food we've been brought up with from our families and we want the world to know that it doesn't need refining and our food is pretty much perfect the way it is!
Anna is Founder and Director of Asian Leadership Collective. She also champions ESEA community in Tech at her work and as a side hustle. Please check out her work on Insta. Plus, how cute is the story she shares of her mum speaking to her grandkids on whatsapp (she's not even a grandma yet).

I've gone solo on this one. In this episode, I talk about some achievements which was made this year including the story 'Brian Wong, who was never, ever wrong' - a short story that was written by David Walliams which will be removed from future prints. I also relive one of my highlights of the year which was attending BESEAN ON STAGE as part of ESEA Heritage Month which included karaoke night.

Chinese Chippy Girl - S2 Ep5: Being Chinese and being Gay
play

11/24/21 • 59 min

Hello! In this episode, we speak with Siu Kee. A BBC (British born Chinese) who grew up in Glasgow/Barnsley. Also a fellow takeaway kid! I feel he ticks all the boxes for Asian golden child. Academic, a lawyer and the only son in his family. Sounds good on paper right? But tune in to this episode as we hear from Siu Kee on his identity issues and speaking openly about his sexuality.
