Here are some things to know about Advent:

What is Advent? Advent is a four-week season in the Church calendar dedicated to anticipating the arrival, or "advent," of Jesus of Nazareth, the long-awaited Messiah and King. Christians from many backgrounds celebrate this time with reflections on four pillars - hope, peace, love, and joy.The word "advent" means "coming". And while their practices may look different, all focus on the hope-filled arrival of Jesus.

History: The tradition of Advent has been observed by the global Christian church for centuries, with the earliest mentions dating back to 380 AD.

Why is Advent Important?

Advent can be a simple and fun tradition of counting down to Christmas. But for others—particularly those who believe Jesus to be the incarnation of God and the long-awaited Messiah—Advent is a shared experience of meditation and prayer that celebrates the arrival of Jesus.

Who Celebrates Advent?

People from Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and other Christian traditions celebrate Advent, though the specific practices may vary from community to community. Additionally, some people celebrate Advent without the focus on Jesus' arrival, seeing the tradition as a fun way to countdown to Christmas.

When it starts: Advent begins on the Sunday closest to November 30, which is about four weekends before Christmas. In 2024, Advent will begin on Sunday, December 1.

Candles: The four candles of an Advent wreath represent the four Sundays of Advent and symbolize the themes of hope, peace, joy, and love.

Themes: Each week of Advent has a theme:

  1. First week: Hope – The Purple Candle/Prophet's Candle
  2. Reflection – We have hope that comes from God's actions and promises for humanity Jesus is the fulfiller of hope. (Romans 15:13)
  3. Second week: Peace - The Purple Candle is also known as the Bethlehem Candle.
  4. Reflection – Jesus is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)
  5. Third week: Joy – The Pink Candle/The Shepherd’s Candle
  6. Reflection - The joy of the birth of Jesus (Luke 2:10-11)
  7. Fourth week: Love – The Purple Candle is also known as the Angel's Candle.
  8. Reflection - God's love for us and the reason for Jesus' incarnation (1 John 4:10)

Episode 139: What is Lent?

What is Lent?

Lent is a 40-day period built around three traditional pillars: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It's a time of preparation for Easter when the Resurrection Jesus is celebrated. During Lent, prayer is made by studying the Bible, serving others by giving alms, and developing self-control by fasting.

It’s a 40-day period to commemorate the 40 days Christ spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptation by Satan, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, before beginning his public ministry.

Why is it observed in Christianity?

Lent is a period of self-discipline that is still commemorated by Christians all over the globe as a way to prepare us for Easter, which is considered the holiest day of the year as it commemorates Jesus's resurrection.

Living out Your Lent: 6 Perspectives of understanding the pillars of Lent

Perspective 1: Deception (Alms & Prayer)

[Jesus said in Matthew 6:1-6 NIV]

• POINT: Lent is a time to take off our masks and come as we are. Who we are is enough.

• Q1. What masks do we need to remove?

Perspective 2: Testing (Fasting, & Testing)

[Jesus was tested in the wilderness in Luke 4:1-13 NIV] ...His responses to the devil:

1. “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone’.” vs. 4.

2. “It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only’.” vs. 8.

3. “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

• Lent is a time to test our steadfastness to trust in God in all things.

• Q2. What are we dealing with that is testing our trust in the OMNIS God?

Chasing Elephants Podcast - Episode 135: Reflections on Black History Month Part 1
play

02/17/23 • 39 min

Brent and Jeff take time to reflect on Black History Month, share what this month means to them and to unpack the history of this month.

Understanding the History:

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. President has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

Carter Woodson chose February for reasons of tradition and reform. It is commonly said that Woodson selected February to encompass the birthdays of two great Americans who played a prominent role in shaping black history, namely Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, whose birthdays are the 12th and the 14th, respectively. More importantly, he chose them for reasons of tradition. Since Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, the black community, along with other Republicans, had been celebrating the fallen President’s birthday. And since the late 1890s, black communities across the country had been celebrating Douglass’. Well aware of the pre-existing celebrations, Woodson built Negro History Week around traditional days of commemorating the black past.

A Thought to Ponder: Brent and Jeff then play a clip from Morgan Freeman sharing his thoughts on Black History Month and then the guys share their thoughts on this.
