Charity Champions Podcast

Dale Smith and Randy lane sit down with Executive Director Barbara Wright to talk about how The Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children helps victims transition to survivors.

About the Advocacy Center:

Many people are hurting because of an act of violence committed against them. Anyone – men, women, and children may be affected by violence. Our children are subjected to neglect, physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Research shows as many as 1 in 4 girls will be victims of sexual abuse by the time they are 18-years-old. For boys, the number is 1 in 6. Often the abuse is a “family secret” passed from one generation to another.

There is hope and restoration at the Advocacy Center. The Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children began in 1976 as the Waco Rape Crisis Center. It has grown into an umbrella agency with three programs, the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) The Victims Center, and Prevention and Education – offering many services to the hurting in our community.

Over the past year the Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children has conducted 569 developmentally sensitive and legally sound forensic interviews for children ages 2-17.

About Charity Champions:

Charity Champions are nonprofit organizations chosen by TFNB Your Bank For Life employees after being nominated by the community. Winners receive an awareness marketing campaign and leadership training at no charge to the nonprofit.

The awareness campaign begins with a radio interview by the voice of the Baylor Bears, John Morris, and an on-field presentation at McLane Stadium in front of thousands of Central Texans during a Baylor Football game. It continues with recognition at Baylor Basketball games and a feature on the Charity Champions Podcast.

After football season ends, 360 Solutions brings Charity Champions winners together for world-class leadership development training during the first and second quarters of every year.

EP 9: UnBound's Mission to End Human Trafficking

About this episode

Randy and Dale sit down with UnBound's National Director Susan Peters to talk about how her organization is working to stop human trafficking in Central Texas and the world. They discuss how to identify the signs of human trafficking. Susan also talks about how UnBound works with law enforcement to comfort victims. This is the first in a three podcast series on human trafficking in Central Texas. Stay tuned for our next episode featuring McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara. We'll wrap up the series by talking to a former victim of sex trafficking.

UnBound's Story

When we learned of children being sold into sex trafficking in our own communities, we felt compelled to do our part to stop it. We asked: What if attorneys, IT specialists, teachers, moms, medical professionals—all spheres of society—worked together? Starting small, we realized that a lot of small adds up to something really big. By working together through prevention, professional training and survivor advocacy, we’ve started to see communities activated to fight human trafficking.

Headquartered in Waco, Texas, UnBound is made up of individual chapters around the United States and across the world working to see change in their own communities. Each chapter works in different areas based on the culture and needs of their city. To find out more about UnBound chapters, check out our locations.

About UnBound

UnBound works to educate and empower youth, spread awareness through citywide outreaches and provide human-trafficking presentations to groups and organizations within local communities. Find out more at unboundnow.org
