This is an episode that the 3Ds have been anticipating for a long time. When Charlie Peacock's Love Life dropped, it made a deep and lasting impression on all three of us. It was an album with a lot on its mind and deep wisdom to impart. In addition, Love Life was a dizzying musical cornucopia of exceeding goodness.

We still adore every musical highlight and lyrical turn of phrase on this classic album. Hopefully that comes through in this episode. Grab a glass of your favorite beverage and find an easy chair as this is going to be a long and winding deep dive into one of the finest recordings in the CCM genre, circa 1985-95.

In 1986, White Heart added a new singer and toughened up their sound. The result was the album Don't Wait for the Movie. Join the 3D's this week as they dive deep into the album that taught us all that "God made convertibles."

The year 1985 was a watershed one for contemporary Christian music. Classic albums like Beat the System and Unguarded made huge marks on the CCM landscape. That year was also a banner year for lesser-known CCM gems. Among the finest "hidden gems" of 1985 was Art of the State by the band AD. AD was formed when former Kansas guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Kerry Livgren surrounded himself with a stable band consisting of former Kansas bassist Dave Hope, drummer Dennis Holt, vocalist/keyboardist Michael Gleason, and Warren Ham on vocals and woodwinds. Art of the State was the second album under the AD name and it remains the band's finest hour in their brief career. Sit back and relax as the 3D's explore this unsung CCM album track-by-track.

CCM in 3D - CCM Out of Bounds, vol. 1 (Episode 12)
play

10/12/20 • 42 min

As a rule, the 3D's focus on the so-called "golden age" of Christian hit radio CCM: 1985-1995. However, our own private enjoyment of CCM regularly stretches beyond those years. This week we acknowledge those years outside of 1985-95 with a new series are calling "out of bounds." This recurring, occasional series will explore our favorite artists, albums, and songs that fall just outside of the 1985-95 time frame. If your favorite CCM came along prior to Amy's Unguarded or after DC Talk's Jesus Freak, then this new series is for you.

A recurring series where one D gives the others three songs from an album that we love that the other two don't know. The other two do the same for the rest of us. Then we get together and talk about what we heard. Confused? Don't be. It's a little things we like to call "Three for the Show."

For this week's episode, the 3D's take a break from their normal 1985-95 window to ponder the state of current contemporary Christian music. Is it terrible? Is it just as good as ever? Somewhere in between? And where does one go to find the best of the best? All of these questions (and more) are on the table as the 3D's engage in a frank discussion about CCM in the 21st Century.

This week the 3D's take a deep dive into one of the finest debut albums in CCM history--the 1991 debut album by the duo known as Out of the Grey. By the way, we all think Tommy Sims is really fantastic on this album.
