The story of poliovirus is a long one. This episode covers the history of the disease from its beginning, along with a personal story of my aunt, Dorothy Williams who contracted polio as a child.

This book is really worth the read. It not only describes the challenges of polio as a history, but also talks about why pharmaceutical companies are reluctant to make vaccines. I highly recommend it.

S3 E3: Responsibility vs. Liability: The Cutter Incident
What did the Cutter Incident leave us with? Are pharmaceutical companies more responsible now, or are testing systems better? Some good things came out of the Cutter Incident, but the Gottsdanker verdict was not one of them.

Everyone makes mistakes, so I have a correction. You’ll also hear this in the episode, but I thought I would put it here, also.
I have to interject that I was a bit confused. In the Crippled Generation, I said that cortisone was a hormone produced by humans. It’s not, it’s a steroid that suppresses the immune system. I confused cortisone with cortisol which is a hormone that regulates immune response as well as metabolism. Forgive me for my misspeaking.
