That's Not Proper, Bad Batch, Believed

Castology

This week’s episode features a REVEAL! Who has replaced Patrick? We mean, OLD PATRICK. It’s NEW PATRICK! HA, you thought we’d tell you their name, but we didn’t. So ya’ll are gonna have to listen to find out who they are and what they are about. Speaking of listening, this week’s podcast recommendations are Bad Batch, Believed AND That’s Not Proper. Then it's on to the reviews from last week.

Liz Recommends - Bad Batch

https://wondery.com/shows/bad-batch/

Yes, yes we know, Liz loves her Wondery podcasts. Deal with it because this one is a good one. Like the other ones.

"Patients are offered a miracle cure, but instead they end up rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The race is on to track down what went wrong with several patients in Texas before more people get hurt. The trail leads to a stem cell company with a charismatic CEO, and to an entire multibillion dollar industry where greed and desperation collide. Laura Beil, the award-winning host and reporter of “Dr Death,” returns for this six-part investigative series from Wondery."

One of the most nuts things about this podcast is that Beil had a six hour interview and unrestricted access to one of the main characters in the story, Liveyon’s CEO John Kosolcharoen. This is a story where it's really hard to tell who the bad guy is, and your opinions are gonna flip several times.

For both: Start from the start.

Nick Recommends - Believed

https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510326/believed

How did Larry Nassar, an Olympic gymnastics doctor, get away with abusing hundreds of women and girls for two decades? Believed is an inside look at how a team of women won a conviction in one of the largest serial sexual abuse cases in U.S. history. Nick thinks you should listen to the whole thing, but also make sure you’re mentally prepared.

For both: Start from the start.

Zane Recommends - That's Not Proper!

This is a listener submission, and it is one of those submissions that took Zane about 5 minutes to latch on to. It was immediate and strong. That's Not Proper! is a podcast hosted and created by Cori Asuncion, a 46 year old mother of seven children who has decided to break the silence of her generation and has come to the realization that things aren't always what everyone says they are, being proper is subjective, social and spiritual awakening and finding humor in the chaos.

For Nick: Create Rebels with Intent

For Liz: Have We Normalized Rape Culture?

Noble Blood, Creative Processing with Joseph Gordon Levitt

This week’s episode is full of drama as one Castologist announces (DUN DUN DUN )their departure from the podcast. Who will it be? Who would be crazy enough to leave the most kick-ass podcast ever? Which Castologist will hold a petty grudge forevermore? And which Castologist is the mature one who is determined to keep the podcast on track? This week’s podcast recommendations are Noble Blood and Creative Processing with Joseph Gordon Levitt. Then it’s on to last week’s reviews and a fond(ish) farewell. Stay tuned next week to meet the newest Castologist on the block!

Liz Recommends - Noble Blood

http://noblebloodtales.com

It’s true crime, history-style! Liz manages to find a way to listen to stories of murder and mayhem, and do some learning too! Host Dana Schwartz gets into stories of royalty gone wrong, in this IHeartRadio podcast produced by Lore’s Aaron Mahmke.

“Noble Blood explores the stories of some of history’s most fascinating royals: the tyrants and the tragic, the murderers and the murdered, and everyone in between.

The world is full of ill-fated love affairs, bad decisions, and family drama, but for a monarch, the personal will determine the fate of nations.

And when you’re wearing a crown, mistakes tend to mean blood.”

Zane Recommends - Creative Processing with Joseph Gorden-Levitt

Zane is showing his creative roots again with this relatively new podcast from one of his favourite creatives! Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets into the nitty-gritty of how a wide variety of creative people do what they do. Listeners’ questions inspire conversations between Gordon-Levitt and a range of creative guests, from Hollywood notables like Rian Johnson and Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, to behind-the-scenes heavyweights like casting director Mary Vernieu, and from political visual artist Shepard Fairey to indie sonic songstress, Yuka Honda, and more.

For Pat: Career & Contacts / Mary Vernieu, Casting Director

For Liz: Originality & Imitation / Rian Johnson, Filmmaker

The Adventure Zone, Chompers, Happy Face

It's that time of the year where it's the holidays, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and a bit like Festivus for the rest of us. So your friendly Castologists decided on a family theme. (Collective aw). Zane heads into the Dungeons and Dragons universe with a familial twist with The Adventure Zone, New Patrick/Nick embraces his inner child with Chompers and Liz manages to find murder in the most unlikely of themes with Happy Face. Then it's on to the reviews from last week. What did Liz and Zane think of New Patrick/Nick's very first recommendation?

Liz Recommends - Happy Face

https://www.thehappyfacepodcast.com/

Who could have predicted Liz would have interpreted the Family theme to include murrrrrrrrder? (Pretty much everyone). But still, this IHeartRadio show is a doozy. Think the words of the actual killer in his police interviews, interspersed with interviews with his daughter about the red flags the family missed as their patriarch was becoming a notorious serial killer.

"For Melissa Moore, 1995 was a nightmare. That’s the year the teenager learned her father, Keith Hunter Jesperson, was a serial killer. It’s also the year Melissa Moore’s doubt spiral began: When you look like your father, and you share his intelligence and charisma, how do you know you’re not a psychopath, too? Happy Face is the story of Keith Hunter Jesperson, his brutal crimes, and the cat and mouse game he played with detectives and the media. But it’s also the story of the horrific legacy he gifted his children. Join Melissa Moore as she investigates her father’s crimes, reckons with the past, and wades through her darkest fears as she hunts for a better future.

"Melissa Moore is an Emmy-nominated Crime Correspondent for the Dr. Oz Show, Executive Producer and host of LMN's "Monster In My Family.” Melissa is a recognized expert on the topics of recovery from trauma, domestic violence and serial violent crimes. Moore was raised Melissa Jesperson, daughter of the infamous “Happy Face” serial killer, Keith Jesperson. Growing up in a small town in Washington state, she survived the escalating trauma from her home life and the man she called her father. Today, she frequently shares her insight and background with survivors seeking healing from violent crimes and abuse through her work and bestselling book, WHOLE: A Guide to Self-Repair (2016 Rodale)."

For both: Serial-style podcast so start from the start.

Nick Recommends - Chompers

Make tooth time easy with this morning and night tooth brushing show for kids and ADULTS TOO.

Kids AND ADULTS TOO will hear jokes, riddles, stories, fun facts, silly songs and more, that’ll keep them giggling - and brushing - for the full two minutes that dentists recommend.

Chompers will have kids AND ADULTS TOO reminding parents that it's time to brush, not the other way around!

For both: Any of em'!

Zane Recommends - The Adventure Zone

https://www.maximumfun.org/shows/adventure-zone

So, what exactly IS a "family" podcast? How about a podcast where three brothers and their dad get together play a game? And what if those brothers were part of the podcast royal family? Justin, Travis and Griffin McElroy from My Brother, My Brother and Me, Sawbones, Schmanners, Wonderful! Trends Like These, The Empty Bowl, Run. A Doctor Who Fancast, Still Buffering, Positiviteeny, and From Death Till us Blart, have recruited their dad Clint for a campaign of high adventure. My favourite season is Season 1...
