Castology - Rabbits, Baby It’s Cold Outside, The Glass Canon Podcast

Rabbits, Baby It’s Cold Outside, The Glass Canon Podcast

Castology

It’s November so we’re going for a Fiction theme for NaNoWriMo. Zane goes back to one of the originals in podcast fiction land with Rabbits, Liz looks at an audio drama designed to create awareness of homelessness through storytelling with Baby It’s Cold Outside and Patrick gets down with his inner and outer nerd with The Glass Cannon Podcast. Then it’s on to last week’s reviews!

Liz Recommends - Baby it’s Cold Outside

https://www.crisis.org.uk/get-involved/podcast

Chris O’Dowd and Anne-Marie Duff star in this three act radio drama that delves into the difficulties faced by those who find themselves homeless, especially around the holidays. Liz was particularly tickled with this one because not only was it a good dramatic production, but it was created with crisis.org.uk to raise funds for the homeless. Liz thinks using theatre and drama for social good is very good indeed.

“Written by award winning screenwriter Regina Moriarty and directed by Virginia Gilbert, the show is a thought-provoking journey, finding humour in the darkness whilst hitting home the impact of homelessness in the UK.

“Baby, It's Cold Outside was developed by Duck Soup Films, in association with Crisis. It marks the launch of Fremantle's scripted podcast label, Storyglass, which will commission and develop original scripted ideas from storytellers around the world.”

For Both: listen to the whole thing from the start. It’s short.

Pat Recommends - The Glass Cannon Podcast

https://glasscannonpodcast.com/

Fictional you say? I don't ordinarily deal in fiction when it comes to podcasts but I suppose I'll make an exception considering the circumstances. As you may well know I'm a huge fan of D&D, and this podcast is D&D adjacent. These guys are playing Pathfinder, which is D&D for nerds, it has more nitty gritty rules. They're hilarious and terribly entertaining and there's a plethora of episodes so please enjoy.

For Zane and Lizne: Start from the beginning

Zane Recommends - Rabbits

https://www.rabbitspodcast.com/

For our Fiction special Zane thought that he would recommend the frist audiodrama serial he ever listened to - Rabbits. Rabbits is a documentary/docudrama that follows one womans investigation of her friends disappearance and her possible involvement in a shadowy secret society that orchestrates a decades-long life and death game.

For Pat & Liz: From the start.

Anthem: Homunculus, Frank and Beans, Sean Carroll's Mindscape

Oh, it's you! Welcome! We've got a wide range of interests with today's recommendations: think science, sex and weird musical stuff. Zane looks at a Luminary exclusive bursting with Hollywood and Broadway star power in Anthem: Homunculus. Liz has a new interest in dating podcasts thanks to her new podcast Ghosts of Boyfriends Past so she's grabbed Frank and Beans from the listener submissions list. And then Patrick looks at a super approachable hard science offering with Sean Carroll's Mindscape (while being very hungover). Then it's on to the reviews of our spooky Halloween ep last week.

Liz Recommends - Frank and Beans

https://www.facebook.com/Frank-Beans-A-Sex-and-Relationship-Podcast-193991901415725/

Liz is getting into relationships and dating podcasts now that she's launched her own and Frank and Beans jumped out at her from the submissions pile. She loves the on-air chemistry of show hosts Beth and Brian, and the way they get the male, female perspective on some of the most important issues in the world of love and sex.

"Frank and Beans is a biweekly podcast that covers the ups and downs of dating, relationships and sex with a female and male perspective, making the world a better place to date."

For both: whatever topic takes your fancy.

Pat Recommends - Sean Carrol's Mindscape

https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/

Who's Sean Carrol you say? Only a theoretical physicist from the university of California. He specialises in quantum mechanics, cosnology, and gravity. He also hosts a rip roaring podcast. These episodes are typically an interview with a scientist or a science adjacent professional. It's good gear, get it in ya.

For Zane & Liz: It's all good

Zane Recommends - Anthem: Homunculous

The time has come and Zane is recommending a Luminary exclusive podcast. BUT it is a truly unique and possibly game-changing musical podcast written by John Cameron Mitchell who wrote and originated the the role of Hedwig & the Angry Inch. Anthem: Homunculous is the story of broke, failed artist Ceann Mackay (John Cameron Mitchell) as he launches an app-based “tumor telethon” to crowdfund his survival. Cynthia Erivo, Glenn Close, Nakhane and Patti LuPone co-star in a darkly hilarious musical retelling of Ceann's life as he realizes what’s killing him may be the very thing that saves us all.

Noble Blood, Creative Processing with Joseph Gordon Levitt

This week’s episode is full of drama as one Castologist announces (DUN DUN DUN )their departure from the podcast. Who will it be? Who would be crazy enough to leave the most kick-ass podcast ever? Which Castologist will hold a petty grudge forevermore? And which Castologist is the mature one who is determined to keep the podcast on track? This week’s podcast recommendations are Noble Blood and Creative Processing with Joseph Gordon Levitt. Then it’s on to last week’s reviews and a fond(ish) farewell. Stay tuned next week to meet the newest Castologist on the block!

Liz Recommends - Noble Blood

http://noblebloodtales.com

It’s true crime, history-style! Liz manages to find a way to listen to stories of murder and mayhem, and do some learning too! Host Dana Schwartz gets into stories of royalty gone wrong, in this IHeartRadio podcast produced by Lore’s Aaron Mahmke.

“Noble Blood explores the stories of some of history’s most fascinating royals: the tyrants and the tragic, the murderers and the murdered, and everyone in between.

The world is full of ill-fated love affairs, bad decisions, and family drama, but for a monarch, the personal will determine the fate of nations.

And when you’re wearing a crown, mistakes tend to mean blood.”

Zane Recommends - Creative Processing with Joseph Gorden-Levitt

Zane is showing his creative roots again with this relatively new podcast from one of his favourite creatives! Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets into the nitty-gritty of how a wide variety of creative people do what they do. Listeners’ questions inspire conversations between Gordon-Levitt and a range of creative guests, from Hollywood notables like Rian Johnson and Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, to behind-the-scenes heavyweights like casting director Mary Vernieu, and from political visual artist Shepard Fairey to indie sonic songstress, Yuka Honda, and more.

For Pat: Career & Contacts / Mary Vernieu, Casting Director

For Liz: Originality & Imitation / Rian Johnson, Filmmaker
