Welcome to spooky season cryptic cuties, we hope you enjoyed the darkcast takeover ep last week. Join us as we take a dive into the vast world of vampire lore, for what is sure to be the first part of a series.

Kelsey has the down low on how to avoid becoming a vampire, from different things to avoid, to anti-vampire burial methods. We discuss rules from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (we are both team Spike btw), and other common vampire myths, like aversion to garlic, holy water, sunlight and crossing running water to escape.

Alanna shares a collection of vampiric creatures from around the world and how they are turned, along with a couple supposed cases of the undead rising from their graves. We had lots of fun this ep so tune in! You might learn something about vampires you didn't before, and take a shot every time we talk about a bag of rice.

Come back next week as we continue our spooktober episodes!

Darkcast promo of the week is the true crime pod Burnt Marshmallows!

Gather round the campfire for today's cozy mystery. We'll keep you company with a little mystery to solve by the end of each episode.

The occult, cults, necromancy, necrophilia- ever wonder what these words mean that sound so similar? We've probably all heard them before but if you are like us, you might be curious to learn more- without ending up on a government watch list. Don't worry, we got you! We did all the searching for you so you never have to say necromancy when you rally mean necrophilia. Talk about a Freudian slip! Kelsey took us on a journey through the meaning of necromancy, what parts of this dark magic are misunderstood and what it all encompasses. Its roots go back further than you think....maybe dead men do tell tales, after all. Alanna takes us on a mini-tour of the occult world, beginning on a bald mountain hat's seen some SHIT. From witches to political executions, it's got all the dark and twisted history! and some statues too. Then its on to Britain to meet a few famous occultists and a Black Sabbath bridge. Stopovers include: tv tangents, multiple mentions of Fringe, sidetracks into podcast land and several mispronunciations of a fairly famed poet. (Sorry!)

Castles & Cryptids - 164: Gainesville Murders /"Screams" Conclusion
play

10/25/24 • 84 min

This week we conclude the Gainesville Student Murders, sometimes known as the Gainesville Ripper Murders.

They do make for a scary movie, targeting a young, defenseless, student population. From a triple-murder to the killing of the Gainesvillle victims, this killer was vicious, yet cautiaus. Who's lying?

But however terrifying, there were some details that the movies got wrong. We can be stranger than we think, so stay strong!

Love y'all and Keep It Cryptic!

Castles & Cryptids - 129: Picture Perfect Family, or is it?
play

12/15/23 • 122 min

Welcome to our 2nd last ep of 2023, and the last true crime ep of the year! (insert confetti cannons and air horns here) For this weeks ep we each chose cases where a person decided to kill the rest of their family members, depressing we know...

Kelsey tells the story of the Fisher family, a seemingly normal family with a few problems from the outside, and even more on the inside. Friends and coworkers are shocked after a sudden explosion rips through the neighbourhood, bringing about The Fall of the House of Fisher (see what we did there, we love you Mike Flanagan)

Alanna shares the story of 2 great pro wrestlers, Chris and Nancy Benoit. While the pair may have started as a storyline, they fell for real and started a life together. Years later their love story comes to a tragic conclusion that no one saw coming.

It's a dark ep for sure, but catch us next week for our last ep of the year (shameless patreon plug, where we have dozens more eps and videos!)

Until then, keep it cryptic!

Castles & Cryptids - EP 69: Kinky Crimes

EP 69: Kinky Crimes

Castles & Cryptids

play

08/26/22 • 138 min

We have a special episode for you this week. Kelsey stays true to her hardcore true crime roots by sharing the bizarre and consensual?? death and cannibalization of a man who found a willing victim online. Is this a case of two men who found and fulfilled each other's ultimate fantasies, or a case of a man experiencing a mental health crisis being taken advantage of by a killer? We will let you be the judge. Thankfully, Alanna brings some humor back to the episode with some very funny sex toy thefts and laws. Just how many sex toys is too many in Texas, listen to find out.

Castles & Cryptids - Ep. 89 Hostage Crisis Crimes -Gladbeck, Germany
play

02/03/23 • 106 min

Have you heard about the hostage situation that took place in 1988 in Gladbeck, Germany? If not, buckle up, you are in for a very wild ride! One that the hostages could probably never have imagined finding themselves in. The criminals attempt to rob a branch of the Deutsch bank in Gladbeck, North-Rhine Westphalia, and the resulting run from the bank turns into sort of a mashup of Speed meets Taken...only there's no Liam Neeson in sight to save them. Tragic and terrifying, the situation played out almost like a Hollywood movie. In fact, the media covered every minute in great detail, prompting questions and reformed laws on how hostage situations are covered and handled by reporters in the future.....

Castles & Cryptids - EP 88: Creepy Twins

EP 88: Creepy Twins

Castles & Cryptids

play

01/27/23 • 125 min

We are seeing double this week as we cover two cases of very strangely behaved twins. Kelsey covers the Spahalski twins, Stephen & Robert, who seem to share more than just genes with each other. Then, Alanna walks us through the bizarre story of Ursula & Sabina Eriksson, who suddenly began acting strange and caused a huge scene on a highway, before one of them eventually murdered someone. At what point does twin telepathy go too far, and can one twin's illness or murderous impulses be caught by the other? We explore these questions and more during this week's ep. Happy Listening!

Sorry for the technical difficulties with last weeks ep, we hope you still enjoyed celebrating our 100th with us. Now, back to our regular scheduled programing, we bring you some strange and also heartbreaking cases of mistaken identity. Kelsey shares the fun fact this week, and then dives into a sudden and seemingly unmotivated murder of a mother of 3. Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

Kelsey and I love all things paranormal and horror related, and we love to talk, so it was a natural thing for me to drag my bestie into! It is just a nice way for us to chit chat and tell each other some strange and unusual stories while laughing our butts off every week. We hope the fans, our cryptic cuties, feel the same.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

Some fun fact or new piece of knowledge they want to share with a friend. That's what I enjoy about podcasts, and good vibes too of course!

Which episode should someone start with?

I loved talking about haunted Scottish castles in our Haunted AF episode 137, but you can start right at the beginning if that's your thing! Just treat the first episode as a pilot, lol most shows get better after a few weeks! We kinda know what we are doing now.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

Haunted, folklore, aliens are some of my fave topics. But true crime has some creepy ones that get in your brain, like for me the heist ones are my favorite but the unsolved murders are very interesting as well.

Which episode are you most proud of?

That's tough, like choosing a favorite child!! Haha a recent one I thought was really good was 160: Lost Cities That Time Forgot. I got to talk about pirates and disaster, two very cool topics.

What is your vision for your show?

To be a consistent friend to our loyal listeners, and to grow our community with even more cryptic pals!

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

Omg so many great ones, My first love was And That's why we drink, and it's still one of my top 5, they are just down to earth and funny. Kelsey listens ro Crimes and Consequences when she does listen to other stuff which is rare!

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

I like alliteration and all the other good stuff was taken, haha! It gives Dungeons and Dragons vibes too, which I also enjoy!

Tell us a bit about yourself

We are Canadian gals from Alberta, met at a job almost 10 years ago now and kept in touch by doing this podcast journey together even after we stopped working together in our day jobs. We are pet lovers that get interrupted by Gordo the pod-cat, and we go on tangents about movies and shows and books on a regular basis. We aren't experts at anything but we love to learn along with our listeners.
