E23 - Pilot Whales Slaughtered in the Faroe Islands
Captain Paul Watson Foundation Podcast
07/10/23 • 12 min
In today's episode of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation Podcast, I speak with Captain Watson about the recent grindadrap in the Faroe Islands. About 80 to 100 pilot whales were slaughtered in the Torshavn harbor, right next to a visiting cruise ship. Unfortunately the John Paul Dejoria was unable to make it to the harbor before the whales were beached and slaughtered by the Faroese people. Captain Watson hopes that with the help of the on-shore volunteers we will be able save the next pod of whales or dolphins targeted.

E18 - Lolita (Tokitae) the orca - with Captain Watson
Captain Paul Watson Foundation Podcast
04/06/23 • 34 min
In today's episode of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation podcast, I get the chance to speak with Captain Watson about the announcement that Lolita may be released from her prison at the Miami Seaquarium in Florida. Lolita is a Southern Resident Killer Whale taken from her family (the L Pod) at the age of 4 back in 1970. She was sold to the Miami Seaquarium at this young age and used to earn a profit for her owners. Lolita currently lives in a very small tank - it is about 80ft x 35ft and is about 20 ft deep in the middle. Not much room at all for a 20 ft long orca.
Paul and I go over the issues with the recent announcement that Lolita is going to be freed. The process of getting Lolita back to the Pacific Northwest is going to take a long time, about 2 years. In those 2 years a lot can go wrong.
The Dolphin Company recently purchased the Miami Seaquarium. The Dolphin Company later was told by the government that Lolita can no longer perform for the public. The announcement to free Lolita seems like a business tactic by The Dolphin Company to unload a useless and expensive asset. It costs a lot of money to feed and care for an orca in captivity. By offering to release Lolita, they can get good publicity while at the same time getting rid of an animal that is only costing them money and giving them bad press. Regardless of the motivations for this announcement, it is our hope that there is a positive outcome for Lolita, she has been forced to live on her own for a long time in a concrete prison.
Captain Paul Watson wrote a book on orcas in captivity called ORCAPEDIA. If you'd like to know more about this topic, this is a great resource.

E14 - Violet Coco - Environmental Protection Activist
Captain Paul Watson Foundation Podcast
02/15/23 • 42 min
In this episode of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Violet Coco from Australia. Violet is an environmental protection activist with the A22 network and Extinction Rebellion. Violet received a medal of courage from Captain Watson for her work in Australia. She is currently facing a potential jail sentence of 15 months for her protest in Sydney. She will find out in March if she indeed must serve that sentence, but she is hopeful there will be a better outcome. Violet is one of the few courageous people in the world trying to bring awareness and spark action to stop humankind from destroying the Earth. Violet and I also talk about the Australian Bush Fires of 2019-2020 and the impact that had on her life.

E25 - Ocean Killers Campaign - with Captain Watson and Lamya Essemlali
Captain Paul Watson Foundation Podcast
12/04/23 • 24 min
In today's episode of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation Podcast we will be speaking with Captain Watson and Lamya Essemlali. Paul and Lamya will give us insight into Operation Ocean Killers, a joint campaign between the Captain Paul Watson Foundation and Sea Shepherd France against the Super Trawlers that are wiping out large schools of fish. The Super Trawlers are enormous vessels that target Mackerel, Herring, and Blue Whiting. These fish are important food sources for larger marine creatures like dolphins. Because the Super Trawlers are so efficient at wiping out fish populations, dolphins have been forced to move closer to shore in search of food. In some instances, dolphins have washed up dead on shore due to starvation. The Super Trawlers also directly kill marine animals by trapping them in their huge nets. This "bycatch" is largely unmonitored allowing the Super Trawlers to do as they please out at sea. It is the goal of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation and Sea Shepherd France to bring attention to these Super Trawlers so that they can be stopped from causing further ecological damage to our planet.
