We are back! We are late.... we are all over the shop... and we are basically planning our season right in your earholes!
What? you might be asking? Why?.....Well, we had a PROPER break. Holly was loved up on her honeymoon in Europe, and Chloe was wrangling children and writing essays through her Christmas Trimester (idiot). Which means neither of them sat down with a pen and paper to map out this season....... but it sounds like this new look planning style is working for them (so far!).
Over a cup of Chamomile and Spiced Apple tea the girls hit the ground running, with some swearing, some inappropriate jokes and a sprinkle of VO 'know how' thrown in for fun - Holly takes Chloe through how to put your mic lead in the mic clip (riveting content)! We finally learn which animation Holly has been working on! - you can tune in to FRIENDZSPACE and hear Holly play 'Kim' every day at 4:19pm on ABCME (Channel 23), or on ABC iview!! (They're only 11 minute episodes - you can easily watch on your phone during a sneaky poo session where you're hiding from your kids).
The girls have a BIG season of International and National Guests lined up....and have everything crossed that they will be able to bring some interviews to you from their beloved bus!
Chloe's songs of the week are: Knowing Me, Knowing You and We're all going on a Summer Holiday.
The wonderful Doyle can be found at @doyleair.
And if you want to check out the beautiful hotel where Holly experienced her bread roll faux pas, check it out here: @hotelschweizerhof_grindelwald

Holly really has to carry this episode because Chloe is back on the Gin and is getting hot in the face. It can be stressful booking in a holiday, and in this episode the girls talk through the apprehension that goes with taking a break in VO . . . or, actually, many different careers.
Holly is about to embark on her honeymoon, and Chloe is half-way through her Uni prac with a small window of availability for VO work each week. And, regardless of the excitement that comes with these things, there always seems to be this icky feeling of FOMO stirring in the gut. Or perhaps that's just some dodgy cask wine, who knows?
We get drinking updates, hay-fever updates, an in-depth conversation about Perineum Sunning and Holly gets very real and raw with us, reminding us all of the importance of prioritising self-care . . . and saying YES to that time off . . . and packing your butt-plug mic just in case that once in a lifetime job comes along!
Enjoy this, the penultimate episode of the season, for a rollercoaster ride of emotions! And if you haven't yet, we would so appreciate you writing us a review if you liked what you heard.

Oh hey there!! Chloe and Holly are back to fill you in on their weeks that were.....have they been chilled, or drama filled? You'll have to tune in to find out!

On today's episode the girls share an interview they did with the brilliant Deanna Cooney. Deanna is a career creative whose many hats include actor, voice artist, photographer and coach. She talks openly about the tiers of VO and how you can get past that "meat market" level - hint hint.... you have to get out of your comfort zone! The importance of learning and UNlearning and how hormonal changes can sometimes provide the opportunity to unlearn techniques that aren't working anymore.

As a coach, she shares her views on people having realistic expectations coming into the industry and of being financially literate. The ladies discuss the importance of being open to the different people you encounter in VO world, and of having a great reciprocal relationship with your agent - frank, clear, honest conversations from the get go - basically like the chat the ladies are having here!

Deanna shares some pearls of wisdom regarding what goes into learning the craft and allllllllll the things that go along with it (performance stuff and business stuff), which is GREAT for newbies but also a good refresher for people who have been in the industry for a while.

If you want to find Deanna you can find her:

This week, the girls chat to the wonderful Sarah Aubrey! Sarah is one of Australia’s top voice actors, whose incredibly diverse reads have been heard across many Australian and international campaigns. Holly and Chloe get Sarah's tips on how best to tackle those emotional reads, how to feel comfortable asking for more time and the importance of maintaining playfulness in VO.
First up, we hear about Chloe's and Holly's week in - "1 work win, 1 life win and 1 moment that reminded you you were human" (they really need to find a catchier title for that segment). It's only a quick catch-up because both of the girls are eager to share the entertaining interview that follows!
This weeks 'Beview' is slightly different due to all three ladies not drinking for a variety of reasons - however Sarah still manages to make mineral water sound exciting! The girls learn about Sarah's time at NIDA, how listening to Lee Perry's demo made her sit up and say 'I could do that!', and the inner angst that rippled through her as she waited to pitch her voice to Brad and Vanessa at Stellar Sound!
Sarah generously shares her thoughts on those long term gigs - she was the voice of Channel 7 for fifteen years and has voiced numerous characters on the Red Bull tv campaigns. As well as talking us through how she discovered the 'fun of voices' as a little kid (stay tuned until the very end for a treat from 1983!!), we hear how she became a sponge for accents as her family moved across the UK, and around the world. The ladies get Sarah to say THAT long Welsh word - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, and even have the pleasure of meeting 'Pearl' (tune in to find out who on earth Pearl is).
Finally, Holly picks Sarah's brain about her BEAUTIFUL Studio Bricks booth..... and they talk tips and tricks for setting yourself up at home, when you're ready to take the step out of the wardrobe and into a sound proof booth! And then, to finish the interview off on a high, Sarah throws Steve Shanahan (@baxteraudio) under the bus in our Phonic Fuck Ups and Faux Pas segment! It's hilarious......promise!!!!

Annnnnnnnd, if you missed it, but want to remember - Sarah's setup:

  • Studiobricks VO Booth from Spain (120x100 inside), Appergee Quartet audio interface $1k (appergee 1 for "go-bag" $$), imac outside, monitor and second mouse and keyboard inside the booth, sennheiser 416 (old mic - industry standard), TLK 102 Neumann mic in "go-bag", Rode NT-1 mic (cheap and good quality), pop filter and shock mount, boom arm yellowtech that came with the booth, LED light, glass door

It's WEDNESDAY....... which means, another exciting episode of CYHM is ready to jump into your earholes. Chloe and Holly start this episode off with the new 'structure' (cue eye roll from Chloe). Holly shares how she has ensured she is asking for her worth ..... and Chloe..... well, Chloe is a little delirious in today's intro ( fun fact.... about three hours after the intro chat was recorded she came down with the flu from hell, so her brain really isn't firing properly and boy can you hear it!)....and then...... the ladies are joined by the phenomenal FELICITY JURD!
Felicity is a renowned Voice- Over artist and Actor who has worked in the U.S, the U.K and Australia. She is a woman of many hats and talents; TV, Film, Theatre, Radio & CD-ROM (YES! You read that right!)...... and we discover all of the weird and wonderful paths her many talents have taken her in this weeks episode. Chloe and Felicity reminisce on how they became fast-friends thanks to the wonderful connection the fabulous Stephen Mahy gave them and we learn that Felicity has a touch of the woo-woo inside her (she knows what you're thinking before you think it!). Felicity's talent as an acting & accent teacher is immense ..... and the girls deep dive into why Felicity's approach sees her getting the best from her students - breaking down mental blocks and delivering on practical skills to get her students where they want to go.
Felicity is a teacher trained graduate of Atlantic Theater Company, NYC and also trained at atyp in Sydney & LAMDA in London. She also holds a degree in English Literature and French Language. Felicity generously talks about her Grandmother, and the one woman show she performed in London, in her honour - I May Fly. She takes us on the journey of her London experience as we gain as insight into just how incredibly talented this exceptional woman is! There is so much in this episode, you really need to listen and let the ladies take you on the twisty, turny journey themselves.

The first Bevvies in the Booth episode for 2022 sees Holly and Chloe crossing the Atlantic (well, not literally), to chat with the quick witted, amazingly talented Anna Frankl-Duval. Anna is an accomplished actor, writer, singer AND Voice Over Artist living in NYC.

The girls chat pandemic booth set-ups, parties, the ins and outs of the Union, musical theatre auditions and even have a go at creating a virtual Maries Crisis - by belting out an Adele tune (with a sound delay), wine in hand. Anna studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts after moving from the UK to NYC when she was 19. As well as being an accomplished actor, she is also a versatile and reliable Voice Artist ensuring her voice is heard regularly on US commercials.

Anna, Holly and Chloe quickly become firm friends in this wonderful interview, but first up Chloe and Holly discuss the week that was, jobs that disappear and....... Angels – yep you heard right, you’re welcome!

We hope you enjoy having us back in your earholes.

Can You Hear Me Podcast - HOLLY HAD A BABY | The story of Charlotte's birth
play

05/30/23 • 30 min

Have we got an extra special episode for you today? Absolutely! Especially if you're into birth stories, oversharing and lots of detail. Just kidding, it's not that bad. But in today's episode, Holly shares the story of how her beautiful (now 6 month-old) baby girl, Charlotte, came into this world - and how it changed her forever.
Becoming a parent has to be one of the most transformational events one can go through. It can be gruelling and challenging and soul-wrenching and magical all at the same time. Today's episode is about bonding through shared experiences and knowing that, no matter what you may be going through, you are never alone.
A little message from Holly:
"Being completely honest, the last few months have been incredibly challenging. Not only have I been navigating the transition into motherhood, but there have been a number of other life stressors that have popped up along the way. Always the way, right - when it rains, it pours? I felt wonderful recording this episode and sharing this special story with Chloe, and all of our listeners...and then I descended, once again, into a period of low mood, stress, anxiety and great overwhelm. It is at this point that I sought professional help. I have since continued riding the rollercoaster of highs and lows that come with life and parenthood - just with a little more support. When I was in the depths, the last thing I felt like doing was seeking help. Having since done so, I finally feel like I am coming out the other side of this fairly dark period. I guess I just wanted to share that, even though this story is shared with joy and happiness (because Charlotte truly is divine!), I also acknowledge the depth and complexity of this experience and the toll that it, and motherhood, has taken on me. It is not always rainbows and sunshine and unicorns, and if you are struggling right now, you are not alone. I am so lucky and grateful to have such caring loved ones around me who have helped me when my world wasn't quite so bright. Thank you to those people. And thanks to you for listening today."

Holly and Chloe sound like they have had a few too many chill pills today, as we hear them catch up over their - Work Win, Life Win and thing that made them feel Human - Chloe has a crack at a jingle....and she actually sounds alright!
Today's episode delves deep into the world of Vocal Coaching with the incomparable Salvatore Sorce! Salvatore is based in London, having previously trained and worked as an Actor. He did a long stint in Australia as an Education Manger with L'oreal before moving back to the UK to set himself up as a world renowned Vocal Coach to the stars (according to Chloe).
Salvatore teaches the ladies about a fancy instant coffee from Eataly in London, as they discuss the importance of connecting to the words you are speaking, whether you're an actor, voiceover artist, or educator/presenter at L'Oreal! They deep dive into being ballsy when going after something and business and leadership facilitation
They talk about the importance of using your voice properly as a human being, not just a performer when you're breathing AND speaking! They get woo woo and discuss enjoying the time and space in front of people to interact with them, as well as listening to the messages coming to you. Salvatore kindly opens up about his late diagnosis of dyslexia, which he refers to as "The dark gift" (making it a superpower), and how it has helped him discover different ways of teaching and learning
Strap in for a live example of accent coaching specifically for Australians and Salvatore's top 3 giveaways of a dodgy American accent. He really knows his stuff!

If you want to work with Salvatore contact him through his website www.salvatoresorce.com.

In today's interview, the ladies are heading into the future..... two whole hours into the future.... in their interview with Musical Theatre SUPERSTAR, Stephen Mahy!!!!!!!!! (he is in New Zealand ... thats why it's in the future).
Holly starts the episode with a crazy adventure story and Chloe discusses the difference between a 'cancelled hold' and a 'cancelled job' (resulting in a cancellation fee) - whilst she's on a caffeine and pseudoephedrine high, which makes for some interesting storytelling.
Then, the lovely Stephen Mahy joins the ladies from across the sea, where they discuss the intricacies of the bubbles in Champagne and Sparkling wine....... all agreeing that Cristal is the most 'exciting' to drink. They quickly move onto the similarities in 'vocal care regimes', adjusting your warm up to suit your mood and how daily cold showers can impact the most important aspect of a solid warm up - the ability the breathe properly!
Stephen's long and successful career in Musical Theatre enables him to reflect on the responsibilities of older creatives across the industries, whilst reminding us of how much we can learn from the newer generations coming through the ranks. Having started his career understudying the lead role in Miss Saigon, paving the way for years of Musical Theatre lead roles, Stephen generously shares his gratitude of the many highs his career has awarded him ..... whilst reminding us of the importance to look after, and be open about the state of, your mental health - cue Holly and Stephen nerding out about the Wim Hof Method.

It's our first interview for 2023 and we are so excited to talk to the one and only Dan Brumm!
Dan Brumm is known worldwide as the voice of Uncle Stripe in Bluey..... but we find out in this interview that he is SO MUCH MORE.
For over 15 years Dan has been voicing content for Australian and International markets......from TVC and Radio campaigns, to Corporate Narrations and Documentaries, Dan sure knows how to add warmth and a down-to-earth sincerity to any brand. Brummy is based in Brisbane and before launching himself head first into voice-over he was, and still is, a master of sound design.
In this interview, Dan and Chloe bond over their shared insights into life with 3 kids and how they are both leaning heavily into time away from alcohol to help them be better parents. Dan takes a walk down memory lane as he meets gorgeous little Charlotte and shares some great memories from when his little people were even smaller.
Holly and Chloe ask Dan all about his work on Bluey and he shares the commonalties he and Uncle Stripe have in 'Dadding'... it includes a lot of games where you can lie down haha. Dan shares how he got into sound design, his love of music and the enjoyment that he gets from the narration work he does on Gem Hunters Down Under.
If you are keen to try some of the meditations that Dan discusses, look up 'Sam Harris' who has a podcast called 'Making Sense' and a waking up meditation app called "Waking Up" (makes sense! haha).
We thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Dan and can't wait to catchup with him in Brissy!
