We don't know about you, but this COVID19 crisis has certainly made us reflect on what's most important in life. A little while ago we had the pleasure of Interviewing Miriam Lancewood, author of Woman in The Wilderness and although she doesn't own camels, boy did some have some wisdom for us! We wanted to interview Miriam about her wilderness adventures, because we know, that some of you listening, have brought camels for this idea of living more freely, trekking with your camels to remote places, far away from anything.... not to mention a large number of you who are wild about being in the wild and experienced this first hand with us on one of our camel treks. Miriam's amazing book, about her 8 years (so far) living out in the wilderness with her partner Peter covered some pretty interesting things. They have.... No phones. No work to attend. Some savings to help buy food every few months. Their own two legs. Back packs... And a heart open to what the wilderness can teach. Talk about DREAMY! It’s their way of life, but it hasn’t always been this way for them.... They wanted to learn how to hunt & survive in the wilderness, and they wanted to find out what happens to the mind and body, when living in the beauty of the wildest nature on earth. You just have to tune into the interview, we promise you’ll leave feeling inspired in your own way – you can watch our video interview with her or listen to the audio. These are concerning times with the COVID 19 crisis occurring all around the globe. So many lives and business are affected and of course, camel business activity isn’t immune to this situation (and animals do NOT stop eating). We’ve been receiving emails (thank you) from concerned camel business owners & operators with how they will keep their business ‘afloat’ while all business activity has stopped. For most, if not all, camel business they need face to face contact with people to make their money (we know, we’ve closed down our Beach Camel Rides operation). Camel sanctuary’s, camel rides operations, farm tours, camel milking operations, cosmetics & products are all feeling the effects of this “virus situation.” So I (Tara) want to support you. I’ve had over 10 years in the online marketing “world” and I’m surround by incredible online business owners and I have some things that can help during this time with the knowledge that I’ve gathered. Tune in to hear of ways that you can keep the income rolling in so you can feed your animals (because, let’s face it, they can eat better than us most the time!) and keep your business afloat. Oh, and leave a comment over at our blog if you had any creative ideas come to you through listening – or while in isolation. Let’s all help each other, since we’re all in this together. Camels are built to have relationships. For evidence of this, all you have to do is look at their herd behaviours. We’ve had the pleasure of witnessing large herds of camels and the complexity of their herd behaviours, but it all boils down to one thing... Relationships. Strong, trusting relationships that they [the camels] can lean into. That’s why “Camel Connection” is so important AND makes training and handling easier in the long term. The first step to any camel training & handling should always be building trust, but, as you’ll discover in this episode, there are many different “ideas” around trust, but we deliver you “trust” straight from the camel's mouth (so to speak). Camel Q&A- Why Camels Bite

Camel Connection Podcast

play

04/06/20 • 17 min

More often than not we get emails from camel owners asking for support around their camel’s “biting” issue. A camel will bite, or attempt to, when they are feeling threatened, looking for food (the problem with “treating” camels) and or if they are in the Habit of biting from a history of needing to defend themselves. Not one case of a “Biting Camel” is the same, they are all very unique. That’s why we recorded this episode on Why Camels Bite, because if you work with camels or own them the number one most important thing to learn is your camel's way of thinking. We help you understand WHY a camel would bite in this Camel Q&A episode. Tune in now to hear this Camel Q&A: Why Camels Bite? Sometimes simplicity counts more than complexity and when training & handling camels this is defiantly the case. Camels can have that effect on you - bringing you right back to the basics. In this episode it may not seem like the things we talk about are basic overlooked actions, but to the camel they are! Often “misbehaving” camels require a simple fix and an adjustment of techniques. Often “problems” or “challenges” that arise when training or handling camels require... Simple fixes, mostly on the human part! Given that camels are a herd animal the question lingers: Is it okay just to have one camel or should they be with their own kind? We understand that in different parts of the world different privileges play out on the accessibility (and the buying) of camels. In Australia we are very privileged as camels are relativity assessable and not a huge investment - compared to the United States for instance. We answer this question: Can I Have Just One Camel, from the camels perspective and we also share our experiences with a variety of situations form the camel being on its own to with other animals; the camel having a human companion; the camel being in a herd environment or just with another camel. #66 - How To Be Safe Around Camels

Camel Connection Podcast

Did you know camels can kick with their front legs AND back legs AND also do this while sitting down...? One of the scariest things as camel training mentors is seeing so many people not be aware of the safety zones when training and handling camels. Unfortunately we see a lot of accidents happen, outside of our training courses, that could have easily been avoided. When a camel hurts you it’s never that the camel wants to hurt you, often it’s by accident and accidents do happen when a handler is not aware of the safety factors or gets complacent. For instance, maybe the camel gets a fright while you’re leading them and if you’re near their front legs when they run you can accidentally get kicked, because they have such long legs. So let’s get you feeling & being safe around camels.... let’s talk about how you can stay safe around camels. We have a very special episode for you today because World Camel day is June 22nd (every year) and for us and many camel lovers world wide this is a great excuse to share the amazingness of these animals that we’ve fallen in love with. If you Google World Camel Day its offical explanation is to create awareness about the camel and its production of food, wool and transportation in many indigenous cultures, past and present. This particular podcast episode for World Camel Day we’re shaking it up a little and sharing heart-felt stories on how camels have changed individual people’s lives in ways that you couldn’t even dream up. We did a ‘call out’ for stories of people and how camel’s have changed their lives and the responses we got were completely heart warming to say the least. We read these stories out load in this episode to honour The Camel and their ability to help us feel at home in our own skin, the transformation that they can offer (consciously or unconsciously) and how they impact our day to day lives. You’ll leave this episode with your heart full and maybe even some tears shed (we know our eyes welled up during this episode). This is in appreciation and dedication of ALL camel lovers out there in the big wide world and of course the wonderful camels that impact (or shall we say ‘camel-pact’) our lives.
