Call Me By Your Game - Episode 36 – Assassin’s Creed with Jonathan Sims
play

09/09/20 • 88 min

Put on your Sunday shoes because this week we’re traveling through genetic memories and diving into haystacks. That’s right, we’re talking about the first game in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Assassin’s Creed(who could have guessed?). We’re graced by the presence of actor, teacher, and GameStop Careers survivor Jonathan Sims.

On this episode Conner and Sims reminisce about their days at college together and discuss when they took a sketch class and then later wrote a web series with some friends. Wholesome, right? Sims also shares how he was the PlayStation kid in the family but still liked the Nintendo hits, how he got to play Assassin’s Creed over a holiday season and had so much free time, and this game fit perfectly into his eternal enjoyment of open world action adventure style games.

What’s a sequel if we don’t make it our first ever game covered twice on this show? She joins our buddy Alec Robbins the DKC2 hall of fame with this appearance and we couldn’t be happier.

On this episode Rekha discusses the appeal of diving into worlds that interested her and how that manifested itself in drawing and playing certain video games, discusses her love for customizing characters in games and feeling seen through “The Rekha” the wrestler that she made, and how this game was THE activity for her and her roommate during a hot summer in New York City. Rekha rules and you should check out everything she’s been up to lately.

Call Me By Your Game - Ep.47 – Counter-Strike with Kristin Thorson
play

12/02/20 • 87 min

We come to you on this blessed day with an episode featuring the true Summoner of Spira and fan favorite from the FFX co-op episode, Kristin Thorson. She does the listening world a favor by finally getting us to discuss a truly special game, Half-Life: Counter-Strike (1999).

Kristin discusses playing games at her badass biker grandma Pat’s home, how she learned a lesson from her family that if you’re not having fun playing a game that it’s a good time to set the controller down and return later, and how her friend Randall brought her into his counter-strike introduced her to what would be her group of friends through high-school. Very much a Sandlot moment, just with more gadgets!

Call Me By Your Game - Ep.50 – Warcraft III with Reilly Smith
play

12/30/20 • 91 min

Look, we know that video games can help forge strong friendships in the fire and brimstone of pixels. We also know that without another bud that there’s nothing to forge. This all makes sense, right? On this episode Conner is joined by old video game buddy and father to Odeon.tv Reilly Smith to talk about Warcraft III from 2002.

Reilly and Conner start out by remembering how their friendship was codified by their mutual excitement for the recently announced Nintendo Switch back in 2016 and how they are certain the Switch commercial during the Falcons / Patriots Super Bowl turned the fate of the game itself. Reilly also discusses getting consumed by Warcraft III and becoming a part of the Wuffle clan, talks about the RTS aspects of this game that made it addicting, and how despite the re-release being a disappointment it was not able to taint the legacy of the original.

You’re gonna want to play the Song of Time and listen to this one again. The legitimate heir to the throne of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and host of the Inside Video Games Podcast July Diaz came on the show to talk about one of the greatest games of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

On this episode we shout out a few local video game stores in Game Realms, World 8, and Game Dude. July recounts getting hooked on the game after watching his downstairs neighbor play it, discusses the problem of finally having the money for games as an adult but less time to play them, and how this game was able to act as a gateway to other genres.

Call Me By Your Game - Preview: Co-op Episode 3: Final Fantasy X
play

10/02/20 • 55 min

Welcome to the preview of Call Me By Your Game Co-op Episode 3 featuring Final Fantasy X. Co-op episodes are monthly patreon exclusive episodes from Super NPC Radio, our little video game podcast network. They’re a part of the $10 DJ Toad Tier but we will bring a preview of each episode to the traditional feed. They’re more of a deep dive look from a group on a particular game focusing mostly on what we love and what works best for the game. Enjoy!

Back in 2001 the world was introduced to Zanarkand. Now, twenty years later, Conner McCabe (4D Printer, UCB, Dave and Bruce) Jake Sprague (Unsolicited Advice, UCB PONY), Oscar Montoya (Spanish Aqui Presents, Bless The Heart), and Kristin Thorson (Twitch, Jeff and Them) do a deep dive discussion on what made Final Fantasy X so special.
On episode 3 of Call Me By Your Game Co-op, Conner is joined by 2 returning champions and newcomer / FFX scholar Kristin Thorson. They discuss not only how they all experienced FFX for the first time and how it differed from previous Final Fantasy games. They dive into the fun of filling out the sphere grid, exploration of themes such as institutionalized religion and what comes with it, gush about how fresh and fantastic the battle system is, and so much more. Tidus and the gang would be proud of this episode’s guardians for making this such a great hang

Call Me By Your Game - Ep.56 – Pokémon Stadium with Paige Elson
play

02/10/21 • 90 min

We’ve had one round yes, but what about second round? (you know, like the 2nd breakfast quote from the Lord of the Rings? ...I’m sorry) On this week’s episode we’re discussing a groundbreaking game on the Nintendo 64 that brought our Pokémon to life. We’re joined by podcast host, writer, actor, and 209 standout Paige Elson to discuss Pokémon Stadium (2000).

Paige dives into the experience that was attending her aunt’s day care growing up where many kids lobbied for time on the group N64 and shares about her Nintendo experiences over the years. Regarding Pokémon Stadium, Paige and Conner go down the list of amazing mini-games, Conner recalls the struggle of going up against the most difficult battles using rental Pokémon, and Paige reminisces playing different N64 with her cousin and her mom.

Tony Hawk? Never heard of him! Plus, who needs the guy when you can fricken rule the world in Disney’s Extreme Skate Adventure (2003) for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. We’re joined by future world leader, often comedian, and current TikTok icon Anna Garcia to talk about it.

This game is rad as hell and we’re stoked that Anna brought it to our attention. On this episode she tells Conner about epic sleepovers at her best friend’s house during this game’s heyday, how much fun it was to create herself as a character and drop into the game, and even tells us about some magical place called Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum (it’s real freaking place).

I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that this is an absolutely fantastic episode. The bad is that it is the final in the Baseball Spotlight series for 2020. We are wrapping up the series in the most appropriate way possible, and that is by covering Backyard Baseball 2001 for Windows and Mac.

Joined by newcomer and golden son of Detroit Alex Bernard, Conner and previous guest / childhood best friend Eddie Martin discuss the phenomenon that was the 2nd installment in the Backyard Baseball series. On this episode our ballplayers discuss the eclectic cast of character both pro and backyard that populate the game, how cool it was to be able to play with our favorite pro players as kids, and how this game took each of our love for the game to new heights. Don’t worry, we shout the legendary announcement team that is Sunny Day and Vinnie the Gooch.
