But What Will People Say - Let's Talk About Race with Samiya and Ja'Cory
play

06/09/20 • 78 min

Send us a text

I'm joined this week by Samiya and her husband Ja'Cory as we take some time to talk about the Black Lives Matter movement and taking the first small steps to starting a conversation addressing anti-black racism in South Asian culture. Samiya breaks down bringing home a partner who is black, while Ja'Cory shares his own experiences while sharing resources on how we can all be allies. We touch on colourism, the casual use of the N word among South Asian's, and how we can talk to our families about a topic many of our parent's don't want to discuss.

But What Will People Say - Love, Chai, and Other 4 Letter Words with Annika Sharma
play

10/13/21 • 52 min

Send us a text

Annika Sharma is the author of Love, Chai, and Other 4 Letter Words and the co-host of The Woke Desi Podcast. Her book tells the story of Kiran and Nash and explores their own interracial love story in the city that never sleeps. We discuss all things writing, podcasting, creativity, and more!
About the book:
Kiran needs to fall in line. Instead, she falls in love.

Kiran was the good daughter. When her sister disobeyed her family's plan and brought them shame, she was there to pick up the pieces. She vowed she wouldn't make the same mistakes. She'd be twice the daughter her parents needed, to make up for the one they lost.

Nash never had a family. The parents who were supposed to raise him were completely absent. Now as a psychologist, he sees the same pattern happening to the kids he works with. So he turns away from love and family. After all, abandonment is in his genes, isn't it?

If she follows the rules, Kiran will marry an Indian man. If he follows his fears, Nash will wind up alone. But what if they follow their hearts?
