Busy Dads Do Sci-Fi - EPISODE 52: Did I Stutter? (Star Wars: The Last Jedi)
play

12/20/17 • 62 min

"Whatever you do don't pull your punches!"

--Kevin

Star Wars is known the world around. It's pervasive and it's iconic. The Busy Dads have watched the most recent entry into the Star Wars saga, THE LAST JEDI directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper). We share a bottle of seltzer and discuss whether or not it's possible for a movie called STAR WARS to actually NOT be STAR WARS. We also talk about whether or not that really matters and how much are we going to try to NOT like something even in the face of floating, frozen people in space.

Come and listen to us overly dissect a movie that we both really enjoyed in order to please the inner fanboy that wants desperately to not like something that the higher self wants equally desperately to love. Also, we make jokes about turning loveable Disney toys into sex dolls. So, there's that.

Also, lets us know what YOU thought. This was a divisive Star Wars movie and we want to know what you thought as well, listener.

"The meditative quality of this meditative movie was moving."

--Kevin

In a continuation of our return to some of the classic of Sci-Fi, and in anticipation of the sequel, the Busy Dads will finally take a look at the Ridley Scott iconic film that is BLADE RUNNER. Kevin and George discuss why this movie is important now and why it's important to both of them. There is some talk of comparison to the seminal work by Philip K. Dick on which the movie is loosely based as well as talk about any expectations we have for where the universe could go in the next movie.

So, get your Replicants out of retirement and join us for Episode 47 of the Busy Dads Do Sci-Fi Podcast. Replicants our of retirement? That doesn't make any sense! If they're retired that means they're dead. Oh, jeez. I'll never hear the end of this one.

"That's the opposite of having a gift, George."

--Kevin

How could you possibly condense 40 years worth of comic book stories, told across multiple titles and timelines into one movie and have it maintain all the appeal of the original material? Well, you cannot. BUT...if you just want to make a kick-ass, really fun Sci-Fi Comic Book movie with some great characters and memorable moments then you hire James Gunn. We talk about GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, which Kevin has never seen and George has seen about 50 times. So, break out your Rocket Raccoon Happy Meal Toys and your Drax the Destroyer Slurpee Cups and buckle in for an HOUR of Busy Dads talking about a comic book movie.

Enjoy and thanks for putting up with us!

"Jackie Chan was NOT in Wild, Wild West." -- George

Adam may be dead for all we know. However, Kevin and George soldier on in his stead. After a brief interlude into Supermanism, we talk about William Gibson's BRIDGE TRILOGY of books and compare them to Young Adult Literature. Specifically, UNWIND by Neal Shusterman. After discovering that Keanu Reeves has played a lot of Jesus allegories, we watch the trailer for the upcoming HBO series WESTWORLD and talk about how different it will be from the cult classic on which it's based.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer is like punk fans saying they love The Smiths." -- Kevin

We essentially eat ice cream and talk about how bad a job we are doing. So, essentially an episode of Sex & The City. Somewhere in there we manage to talk about the Sci-Fi television series DARK MATTER and how it is a "slow burn".

play

07/20/16 • 34 min

"No seltzer this week. You get water."

--Producer Vic

After a chiding from our producer, we're back to George and Kevin in the booth as Kevin is still off fighting for the future of the Horse Crab Nebula and their ability to marry outside their caste system. It's a noble effort. On the show we talk about Jennifer Phang's ADVANTAGEOUS and whether or not we'd be into the deal presented. POKEMON GO and the phenom it's becoming in our neighborhood is briefly discussed. Also a discussion about the 90s classic FREEJACK leads Kevin into discussing a sci-fi novel by a Brazilian rock star named Yos.

play

06/08/16 • 48 min

Adam is still fighting the evil clone of Chuck Norris in Syria, so it's just George and Kevin once again. This time we read AMICAE AETERNUM by Ellen Klages, which turns out to be totally YA and totally good. Randomness ranging from more Cyberpunk to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to other podcasts and all the way back to the days of VHS and why the hell they cost so much.

Enjoy!
