The power of Collective Wisdom
Brooke's Light Podcast
11/16/20 • 34 min
What in the World is Collective Wisdom ?
If you ever tried to solve a problem or come up with ideas to only discover when you leaned in and asked for help that ideas began to emerge in a matter of moments - Then you experienced Collective Wisdom. What we discuss here and look to leverage to help bring Brooke's Light to the more people is on a grander scale & we uncovered that no matter how different we are there is a higher purpose we are called for.
When Brooke was receiving treatment, care and services during those eight months between May '18 & Jan '19, we met a lot of people and several have had a lifelong impact on us. They helped the Pearson family in a multitude of ways and November 7th they reconvened on a Zoom call to unlock their Collective Wisdom with us. Many of them had not seen each since before Brooke had passed so there were some bittersweet memories - and what was uncovered was nothing short of astounding.
Mark attended a very special kind of training in Ohio in 2019 using the Xchange Approach that teaches how to facilitate conversations to unlock the power of Collective Wisdom. He had a vision as a trainee to one day use this approach to bring together Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, Therapists and most importantly caregivers and patients to share the knowledge first hand - feel heard - and one day truly change the face of Pediatric Cancer & someday all Cancer Care.
This podcast was dedicated to Kyle & Briana from the Leptomeningeal Cancer Facebook group. The work Kyle puts into this group nothing short of miraculous. We are so blessed to have finally got to meet them both. God Bless you.
Please go to this group to learn so much about LMD, treatments and read the stories of countless people whom have been affected by this gruesome disease.
We can make a difference through awareness.

Sympathy & Empathy - Which one you need and when
Brooke's Light Podcast
12/07/20 • 25 min
How are you?
At least you...
Common phrases folks utter when they want to offer support but yet don't know how or are uncomfortable in the silence and want to make you feel better. Most of the time, because they are uncomfortable. It's understandable - how do you attempt console a parent that just said good bye to their child when you have nothing to compare it to? It's uncomfortable for you and damn worse for them.
What a person in need of empathy needs is a human connection - They don't want someone to fix the problem - unless you can truly cure their situation - If not, then sit with them. Be the shoulder to lean on, to listen to what they have to say. That would mean the World to any person reeling from the grief of loss.
In this episode - Mark invites his amazing wife to the show and she share some nuggets of truly useful information that would help anyone walking through the darkness.
A great video on Empathy is by Brene Brown - Inspiring leader on the topic of Shame & Empathy. Check out her TED Talk.

Connecting through Grief
Brooke's Light Podcast
11/18/21 • 21 min
We all grieve - many of us know Death more intimately than others yet Death is very much a part of being Alive. Mix in Love and thus grief is born. Sharing the memories of our loved ones and your own experiences walking through that grief with others allows you to connect at a very human level. There are various ways to connect with others, but the way I really enjoy is face to face where you see & feel the exchange of emotions.
November 18th, 2021 is Children's Grief Awareness day - Please share this link with someone whose child is grieving the loss of a loved one.

The Struggle
Brooke's Light Podcast
11/30/20 • 29 min
I think we can all agree that for the first time in a very, very long time people around this planet have struggled in some manner. Financially, physically, mentally & spiritually - Whether you lost a job, a home, your vehicle or the worst loss of all - a Loved one.
The struggle is real and many of us deal with it the same or differently, however, we must all experience it as it helps us grow - it becomes a part of us and we all have a choice on how we handle it.
This episode is especially important as Kyle is experiencing some tough times that he helps work out right on the show.
Mark mentioned renowned public speaker Josh Shipp on the episode and here is the YT video where he explains the saying "It's actually our imperfections that make us human and our humanity that makes us influential."

Difference between Gratitude and Thankfulness
Brooke's Light Podcast
11/23/20 • 29 min
Thanksgiving Episode
Do you know the difference between being Thankful and having Gratitude?
- Gratitude is an action, a choice.
- Thankfulness is a feeling.
Being Thankful is at the origin of Gratefulness as you need the feeling, the emotion to drive the action of Gratitude which is an action that you take each and every day. You can be thankful for when someone helps you with groceries or holds open a door when you need it most. Being Grateful is then taking that feeling and letting it drive you to appreciate others through your own actions. Akin to 'Paying it forward', except you make it part of your being, your values that your govern your life by.
We speak about our struggles of thankfulness when we were in the middle of Brooke's treatments. While we very thankful for the staff that helped we were very bitter over watching Brooke endure the pain. That was until we searched and understood that through the Law of Attraction, the power of Gratitude can show us there is more to this experience.
Thank you to our radiologists Tracy and Tom - you always tried to help and accommodate us every time we came down for 47 days of Brooke's radiation. We love you!

Putting on your Oxygen Mask first - Self Care to be there when your kids need you most
Brooke's Light Podcast
11/02/20 • 29 min
Self care is often overlooked... especially when you are caring for your child
We often overlook ourselves when our children are ill. We burn the candle at both ends and drive ourselves to exhaustion - When your child is fighting for their life, this situation is compounded 100 times. You eat last, if at all and what you eat doesn't serve your body or your mind. You opt to not move or exercise, even more so when you are waiting for your daughter to wake up from her 3rd coma.
There are consequences to a caregiver not taking care of themselves and the lack of self care can turn disastrous.
In this episode, Mark goes into his realization while caring for his daughter Brooke at home and especially in the hospital. He shares how he started making slight changes to better himself while caring for Brooke so that he can be present with a sharper mind so he could advocate for Brooke.
Kyle shares the importance of mindful daily practice, such as meditation and his focus on nutrition to level up. There are always better choices when poor nutrition through convenience is no longer an option.
The Heart Math Institute is an amazing organization that has done extensive research into the heart and mind connection through Heart Rate Variability (HRV). The Inner Balance tool , Mark uses, is simple and can be used anywhere.

Finding vulnerability
Brooke's Light Podcast
10/26/20 • 30 min
Vulnerability is often elusive and just within reach, however, fear has a way of keeping us from showing our soft underbelly. Whether it is fear of the unknown or fear of being hurt - that four letter word keeps many from asking for help or even just reaching out for a person to talk to. When you are walking through the darkness that fear is magnified as your back is already against the wall.... Ironically, that is when you need to be vulnerable the most.
Mark & Kyle delve into this and share what they learned as they each uncovered how to be vulnerable and still continue to learn today.
Kyle leaned into his family and school friends - citing his thespian 'Alvernian' family helped him and gave him that shoulder to cry on and be there for him.
Mark learned to lean on his extended family and discovered a brotherhood of legendary dads via the Dad's Edge Alliance - Where hundreds of men walk through their lives together using Vulnerability as just one of their many tools to support each other.
