A 24-year veteran of the underground Hip-Hop scene and Turntablist community, DJ Killa-Jewel has rocked decks across North America, Europe and Asia at some of the most prestigious clubs, concerts and festivals to date. Well-known for her collaboration with Thud Rumble’s DJ Q-Bert in his ‘Do It Yourself Vol. 2’ DVD, and extensive touring with Canadian actor and director Robert Lepage, Killa-Jewel’s participation in numerous DJ battles including the Canadian DMCs, ITF Scratching Categories (NYC), the World Vestax Extravaganza (Japan), and the Red Bull Thre3Style Canadian Finals (Calgary) anchored her place amongst the best in the industry.

The world-renowned turntablist has propelled to the top of her class by fusing hip-hop with the theatre milieu, composing “turntable music” live for theatrical productions. In 2014, she unofficially released her first album, Saudade, followed by self-produced EP Reckless in 2020, featuring collaborations with Nate Husser, Wasiu, Ras Kass and Sereni-T. Reckless is a project that brings together the classic boom bap hip-hop era with the dry, bassy, 808 rhythms and sounds of mainstream cloud rap. With the use of her own voice as a singer on the record, she solidified her status as both a producer and performing artist.

This year, Killa-Jewel announced her signing to Hydrophonik Records (mother company Indica Records) via Universal Music Canada, and is set to release her next EP, Sagittarius, on October 22nd, 2021. On her most recent releases with the label, PixStar and Pipe Dreams, she marries two different worlds; one for the hardcore turntablist fans who enjoy a range of different scratch techniques, and the other for those whose ears are more attune to the time signature and electronically-synthesized sounds of modern-day trap music.

DJ Killa-Jewel’s influences are varied, adding to her ever-changing complexity and uniqueness. She writes all of her own music and spends a large amount of time considering conceptual takes on her work, which bring an element of theatricalism and originality to her work. Her use of sampling feels so distinct and personal to her, likely due to the fact that by her own admission, she keeps running a list of songs that make her feel something, that act as inspiration to her and help her avoid any creative slumps.

Having faced multiple artistic reinventions throughout the past couple of years, Killa-Jewel changes her style and evolves at a constant pace to encapsulate the essence of a modern artist. Her main goal as an artist is to bring listeners on a sonic journey, an aim that ties in closely with her personal philosophy of viewing life as one big trip. She produces her music like this, starting at the beginning without ever planning where the track will end up. DJ Killa-Jewel hopes listeners are taken on this same journey, being continuously inspired and surprised by her music, never knowing what to expect and loving her all the more for it.

BRIDGE the GAP - AJ KING THE CHOSEN ONE 'THE KISS FM UK JOURNEY'
play

09/20/23 • 18 min

Bauer Radio's Kiss has announced the winner of its talent search competition as AJ King – a 28 year old student and part-time DJ from Wembley.

He beat thousands of hopefuls in the 8-week competition to win a slot on the youth station's line-up.
AJ said: "I'm so overwhelmed that it's come down to me. There was so much talent in the final groups and I'm just glad all my hard work has finally paid off!"

Since the start of the year, Kiss has been looking for radio stars of the future and putting the finalists through their paces. Live auditions took place in shopping centres, with 25 candidates picked for the Kiss Academy. They were whittled down to just 10 before listener votes helped pick the final five.

In the latter stages, hopefuls were given a Blackberry – to tie in with the promotion's sponsorship deal – and asked to do video reports on a variety of topics.

Andy Roberts, Kiss Group Programme Director told us: "From day one of this activity we set out to find a new presenter for Kiss and give people outside of the industry a chance to be that person. At Kiss we're proud in finding, nurturing and home growing talent and AJ now joins an award winning team at the World Famous Kiss".

Check out Becky Hill interview with KVM Mag's very own Laura Alexandra.
With her highly mature, resonant voice and R&B-influenced style, Becky Hill first came to the public's attention competing on series one of The Voice UK. Ultimately reaching the show's semi-final round, Hill became the first contestant to score a number one single when "Gecko (Overdrive)," her collaboration with Oliver Heldens, topped the U.K. singles chart in 2014. A compilation album collecting songs from 2013 to 2018, Get to Know Becky Hill, landed in the U.K. Top 20 in 2019. She followed it with her first official studio album, Only Honest on the Weekend, in 2021. It featured hit collaborations with Sigala ("Heaven on My Mind"), David Guetta ("Remember"), and more. She was subsequently featured on Wilkinson's charting single "Here for You."
Born on February 14, 1994 in Bewdley, Worcestershire, England, Hill was no stranger to music when she first auditioned for the then-new The Voice UK in 2012. As a teenager, she had sung with the acoustic rock & soul group Shaking Trees, which created some local buzz and received several plays on BBC Radio. On The Voice UK, she made it to the semifinal with her powerful renditions of R&B songs by the likes of John Legend and others before being eliminated. By her own admission, she was a novice in the music industry game and it took her 18 months to finally get a record deal. In the meantime, however, her sultry, soulful, older-than-her-years voice was highly sought-after by dance artists looking for feature vocalists. Her first recorded appearance, on British drum'n'bass artist Wilkinson's single "Afterglow," went to number eight on the U.K. singles chart. She then appeared on Rudimental's single "Powerless," singing with them at several U.K. festivals in 2013, including Glastonbury.

Following her chart-topping success with Heldens, Hill worked extensively with London-based dance producer MNEK and issued her debut solo single, "Caution to the Wind." Released in 2014, it showcased a shift toward a more electronica-influenced sound, with twinkling melodies and production reminiscent of Four Tet. The Eko EP appeared in 2017, and she went to number 11 on the U.K. singles chart with 2018's "Back & Forth," a collaboration with producers MK and Jonas Blue. In 2019, Hill reached the U.K. Top Ten with both "Wish You Well" featuring Sigala and "Lose Control" with Meduzaand Goodboys, which also topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. They were among the hits featured on the Top 20-charting compilation Get to Know in 2019. She had another hit with Sigala in 2020 with "Heaven on my Mind," and 2021's "Remember," a collaboration with David Guetta, reached number 13 in the U.K. The latter two songs appeared on Hill's debut album, Only Honest on the Weekend, in August 2021. Her Christmas EP appeared near the end of the year. "Here for You," another Wilkinson collaboration, reached the U.K. Top 50 in early 2022. Hill also appeared on the Galantis single "Run," and guested on songs by David Guetta ("Crazy What Love Can Do") and Joel Corry ("History"). "Heaven" and "Side Effects" (with Lewis Thompson) appeared in 2023.
