Podcast Q&A
Why did you start this show?
Bricks or Sticks originated as a monthly online workshop in 2022 for business owners. We based the concept on the Three Little Pigs (business owners) and the Big Bad Wolf (the pandemic). The workshop stresses the importance of having a solid foundation (bricks) in business and how to build one. The workshops were a huge hit. We then looked at other children's fairytales and applied those lessons to doing business today. Each podcast is based on a children's story (e.g. Snow White, Cinderella).
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
People not only remember fairytales they read as kids, but the lessons they learned from them as well. As we scheduled episodes, our guests were requesting specific stories that they loved as kids. I hope listeners can relate the stories we discuss to their own situations and apply some of the lessons (e.g. Cinderella turning the ordinary into extraordinary or the importance of truth tellers in your business from The Emperor's New Clothes).
Which episode should someone start with?
The first one--Three Little Pigs.
Which have been your favourite episodes so far?
I love them all.
Which episode are you most proud of?
Getting Richard Wurman, the founder of the TED conferences, and arguably one of the smartest people I've ever met or known, to talk with Jocelyn Ring and me about "Oh, the Places You'll Go" for over an hour. Richard has been a guest on four of my podcasts, and I always learn at least 4-5 new things about business and life every time I talk to him.
What is your vision for your show?
The Bricks or Sticks podcast is part of a platform. We have bi-monthly workshops, we plan to do speaking engagements at conferences, and we are writing a book which will come out this fall. I think it could be something special--tying the work we do today to lessons we learned as kids. It's so easy to relate and connect the two points.
What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?
Whitney Johnson's "Disrupt Yourself" podcast.
How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
That is a VERY funny story. Jocelyn and I spent two weeks going through a list of names. We didn't like any of them. At the end of a call, which we recorded, I blurted out "Ahhh...it's all bricks or sticks anyway." Jocelyn, being the branding expert, immediately ran with it. The rest, as we like to say, is the fairytale.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I spent 22 years in the world of publishing magazines and newspapers for business owners. I worked at The Wall Street Journal, Inc., Entrepreneur, Success, and how my own publishing company for 9 years. In 2012, I launched Brian Moran & Associates along with Small Business Edge. We help business owners run better, more productive companies, and we help marketers better target the small to midsize business market.
