Bred to Perfection - Pure vs Cross (Fan Favorite Rerun)
play

03/01/21 • 54 min

Join Kenny and Nancy Troiano, as they discuss the pros and cons of breeding for Purity of Blood or for Hybrid Crosses. This is a topic that can be very controversial. Some say that breeding to create a pure strain is a myth. Some say only peddlers use crossbreeding. Who's right, listen in and make your own decision. This is a show you do not want to miss!

I’m a firm believer that it’s better to create your own strain, then to rely on others to do it for you. Anytime you purchase new birds, you are taking a chance, because the fact is, there are more peddlers than true breeders, and most of the birds available are not pure, they are nothing more than hybrid crosses or mongrels.

To make matters worse, many breeders only sell their culls. If you’re not one of their family or friends, most likely you are not going to get good birds.

THE BIG QUESTION IS, should you create your own strain, or do you continue to bounce around trying to find great fowl? For me, I would rather create my own strain.

I know you will enjoy this episode, and learn a lot too.

We also took questions from the chat room.

There is a lot of confusion in this area. I see so many breeders calling their Foundation Fowl “Seed Fowl”, and calling their Seed Fowl “Foundation Fowl.” To make matters worse, they skip any and all regards or reference to the fowl in the middle, the fowl in the Transitional Stage, which I call my Transitional Fowl. It is my hope that by clearing up the description and meaning of the three stages, you will better understand their function and purpose throughout the Founders Program.

Bred to Perfection - Ep236 - Great Breeders Maintain a Zero-Defect Policy
play

03/10/25 • 101 min

Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to be a true breeder, or if you’re already on that path? The answer isn’t always clear—it’s subjective, and it depends on who you ask. But one thing is certain: there’s a significant difference between being a true breeder and simply someone who breeds. Some breeders practice ruthless culling, while others avoid it entirely. Many also don’t know what to cull for, especially when it comes to defects. They might not recognize a defect or they may not consider it important—until it’s too late and the entire flock shares the same flaw. Join us as we dive into this important topic, so you can decide for yourself what being a true breeder really means.

Make sure to follow and watch our future shows. We plan to dive deep into the world of breeding and genetics, nutrition and health management, and provide essential tips, so you too can create high quality strains. Whether you're breeding domestic chickens, gamefowl, or various types of livestock, this show is for you.

Join us on Bred to Perfection Live, Friday’s at 6pm PST or 9pm EST on YouTube, as we discuss the benefits of creating your own strain.

See ya there!
