However, their dream of starting a new life quickly turned into a nightmare when four of the Dowdy children were brutally murdered. This unfortunate event is known as the Dowdy Family Massacre.

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom.
Today we discuss the murder on August 15, 1914 at The Frank Lloyd Wright Mansion, also known as The Taliesin Massacre. Taliesin is a town in Wisconsin. Frank Lloyd Wright was an influential American architect who left an indelible mark on the world of architecture in the 20th century. He designed more than 1,000 structures over a creative period of 70 years. Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and hundreds of apprentices in his Taliesin Fellowship. Wright's career was marked by innovation and experimentation. He pioneered the use of new materials and construction techniques, such as the cantilevered structure seen in Fallingwater, a house he designed in Pennsylvania that seems to float over a waterfall. He also popularized the use of open floor plans and introduced the concept of the "open plan" in residential architecture.

Breakfast with Mom - Episode 17: The Zoot Suit Riots
play

10/20/23 • 21 min

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom.
Today discuss the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots. These riots took place from June 3 to June 8, 1943, primarily between American servicemen, who were predominantly white, and young Mexican American and Mexican immigrant men, who were often seen wearing distinctive "zoot suits." The zoot suit was a flamboyant style of clothing characterized by oversized suits with high-waisted, pegged trousers and long jackets. The riots were fueled by social tensions, wartime anxiety, and racial prejudice. Many members of the U.S. military stationed in Los Angeles viewed the zoot suit as a symbol of rebellion and nonconformity, associating it with Mexican American youth gangs.
Today I want to shout out Tapanga, she is listening from the DFW area. Tapanga, thank you for listening!

Hello and welcome back to “Breakfast with Mom”!
Today I want to tell you a story about Bertha Gifford, Missouri’s first known woman serial killer. As always you can find my resources in the show notes along with our facebook link and email address.

Bertha Alice Williams Gifford was born October 30th 1871 to William and Matilda Williams in Morse Hill Missouri, she was one of ten children. She would go on to marry Henry Graham in December 1894, they had one child- a daughter named Lila. Henry would die sometime in 1906, I am not sure what would cause his death. I couldn’t find anything about him. She would go on to marry in 1907 to a man named Eugene Gifford; they had a son named James. Eugene and Bertha would live in Catawissa Missouri and their neighbors would tell reporters she was a good cook and very attractive. They would also say she was a very caring neighbor that was always willing to step in and take care of the sick and injured. That would turn out to be a mistake, it is reported that an estimated 17 people would die under her care. It is reported her mode of murder was to use arsenic. I will tell you about some of them. I was only able to find 15 questionable death certs on berthagifford.com.
