Breakfast Bites - the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS Podcast - a TEIVOVO Digital Podcast
Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 73 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 18 December 2023.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.
In rugby league: With superstar free agent Jarome Luai’s future expected to be settled in the coming days, the market for the remaining crop of elite playmakers is heating up.
The Bulldogs are still in need of a partner for gun five-eighth Matt Burton.
While the Cowboys are also battling to retain their young No.6 who could field offers worth around A$1Million, and the Canberra Raiders could also do with a Jack Wighton replacement.
In rugby union: In a first for Fiji sports, the Fijian Drua has launched its very own travel booking website to make it even easier for fans to attend matches in Fiji, Australia and New Zealand.
Launched in partnership with New Zealand travel technology experts Travel Lab, Fijian Drua Travel is the first of its kind for any Super Rugby side and is a one-stop shop for fans wanting the best packaged deals including flights, accommodation, matchday tickets, matchday hospitality, ground transfers and many other activities.
The website is now live, featuring excellent flight deals with Drua airline partner Fiji Airways as well as leading Fiji resorts and hotels.
In football: Carlo Ancelotti says he is in “no rush” to sign a contract extension with Real Madrid amid continued speculation that Brazil’s national team wants to hire the Italian coach.
Ancelotti’s contract runs out at the end of this season. “There’s no rush. We’re here until 30 June 2024.”
In combat sports: The UFC’s most hated fighter, Colby Covington, failed to live up to his tough talk, flopping in his UFC296 main event loss to UFC Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards.
The American nationalist, who was heavily cheered pre-fight - received boos after he went quiet once he got into the octagon, with Brit, Edwards winning by unanimous decision 49-46 on all three scorecards.
In SportsBiz: The Los Angeles Dodgers pulled out all the stops to land Shohei Ohtani, including a big sales pitch from the late great NBA star Kobe Bryant.
According to ESPN, the Dodgers showed a six-year-old recorded video message from Bryant as part of their pitch to land Ohtani – OK, apart from a 10-year, US$700Million contract.
In 2017, Bryant made the minute-long video for the Dodgers as a favor in pursuit of Ohtani, but he instead signed with the Angels.
But this time, the Dodgers got the highly coveted player and Ohtani spoke highly of the video from the Lakers star, who died in a January 2020 helicopter crash.
“That was one of the highlights of the whole meeting,” Ohtani told ESPN. “I was really surprised to see it. It was a strong and touching message.”
Apparently, that moment became the cherry on top for Ohtani to commit to Los Angeles in the largest contract in professional sports history.
Show me the money! For US$700M I’ll sign anything!
And that’s a wrap!

Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 72 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 17 December 2023.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.
In rugby league: After reports filtered through yesterday morning in Sydney that Jarome Luai would be leaving the Panthers to join Wests Tigers on a five-year A$6Million deal, the Panthers playmaker posted on Instagram: “No pen to paper here. I’ll let yous know when a deal is done”.
It was the Sydney Morning Herald who reported that Luai had agreed to the deal with the Tigers, but according to The Daily Telegraph, no such deal has been done, with the Bulldogs still in the running for the five-eighth’s signature as well as a third unnamed club.
The Telegraph also reported that Luai has told coach Ivan Cleary and teammates that he intends to leave Penrith at the end of next season.
In rugby union: The World Rugby 7s Repechage Tournament for the 2024 Olympics will be held in Monaco in June 2024, just a month before the Paris Olympics with the usual suspects in the Women’s comp: Argentina, China, Czech Republic, Hong Kong China, Kenya, Jamaica, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Poland, Samoa, Uganda, and the Czech Republic
The Men’s comp however is stacked with China, Brazil, Chile, Hong Kong China, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Uganda up against 7s big guns - Canada, Spain, Great Britain and South Africa.
Teams that have already qualified for Paris 2024 include the host nation France, New Zealand, Argentina, Fiji and Australia, along with the winners of the six regional qualifying tournaments: Uruguay, Ireland, the United States, Kenya, Samoa and Japan.
On the women's side: Hosts France, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and the United States are joined by Brazil, Canada, Great Britain, South Africa, Fiji, and Japan as winners of their respective regional qualifying tournaments.
In football: The Premier League match between Bournemouth and Luton Town was abandoned after the visitors' captain, Tom Lockyer, collapsed on the pitch. The defender was treated immediately and was stretchered off to applause. The game was eventually abandoned 25 minutes later.
In combat sports: UFC Welterweight champion Leon Edwards has promised to make Colby Covington pay for the now infamous remarks made about his late father, saying: “That man is as good as dead”.
Edwards will look to defend UFC gold for a second straight time against America’s fighting villain Covington at UFC296 in Las Vegas, today.
The fight will be the culmination of hyped, and at times dark, build-up which this week saw Covington reference the champ’s father who was murdered in a London nightclub when he was 13.
And that’s a wrap!

Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 74 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 19 December 2023.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.
In rugby league: As the Jarome Luai – Wests Tigers deal plays out, a controversial new rule makes the chase more complex.
Under the new CBA, there is a 10-day cooling off period after a player receives an offer they’re willing to accept from another Club.
That gives the player’s former Club – in this case the Panthers, a chance to negotiate and potentially up their offer if they would like.
Those 10 days also gives the player the option to change his mind if he wants to. Once the 10 day period ends, the player is free to sign with either Club.
Staying with Wests Tigers – you gain some, you lose some: Flyer Junior Tupou has reportedly accepted an offer from Wayne Bennett’s Dolphins to move north to Queensland in 2025 and Benji Marshall won’t stand in the way of his move despite being keen on retaining Tupou beyond 2024.
In rugby union: A month after claiming World Rugby’s biggest prize, Ardie Savea has claimed the Kelvin R Tremain Memorial Player of the Year at the New Zealand Rugby Awards.
It is the second time Savea has received the top honour, while he was also named the All Blacks Player of the Year for the third consecutive year.
The World 7s Series winning All Blacks and Black Ferns 7s teams were each recognised with the Men’s team named Adidas New Zealand Team of the Year and Women’s Coach Cory Sweeney the ASB New Zealand Coach of the Year.
In football: UEFA Champions League Last 16 first round games: FC Porto vs Arsenal, Napoli vs Barcelona, Paris vs Real Sociedad, Inter vs Atletico de Madrid, PSV vs Borussia Dortmund, Lazio vs Bayren Munich, Coppenhagen vs Man City and Leipzig vs Real Madrid.
In combat sports: Australian-Samoan World Champion, Jai Opetaia has blown up at the IBF after they stripped him of his IBF Cruiserweight title for taking a US$450,000 payday in Saudi Arabia on 23 December against England’s Ellis Zorro (17-0, 7 KO's).
Opetaia reportedly has a couple of million dollars more coming his way in a three-fight deal that’s in the works with the Saudis.
But fighting on the “Day of Reckoning” card which also features Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, Joseph Parker and Daniel Dubois means snubbing the IBF’s mandatory title defence – against Mairis Briedis, who Opetaia beat last year to win the belt despite suffering a broken jaw in two places.
In SportsBiz: They didn’t get the win at the PNC Championship, but Tiger Woods and his son Charlie once again stole the show on the final day of the exhibition event at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando.
Charlie Woods only turns 15 in February, drove a green 325M away, and also showcased a sharp touch around the greens.
The highlight was when Charlie Woods expertly chipped in for birdie and capped off the magic moment with a fist-pump that was reminiscent of his famous father in his prime.
Tiger Woods watched and applauded while visibly beaming with pride.
Kaching – show me the money Nike!
And that’s a wrap!
