Breakfast Bites - the FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS Podcast - a TEIVOVO Digital Podcast
Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 70 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Thursday morning 14 December 2023.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.
In rugby union: Eddie Jones has been named by Japan Rugby Union as their new Head Coach, six weeks after the Australian quit the Wallabies following their dismal showing at the Rugby World Cup 2023.
Jones previously coached Japan for three years from 2012 and led them to their historic win over South Africa at the 2015 World Cup.
In rugby league: BOOM GONE - interim Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson has revealed the merger club have pulled out of the race to sign NZ Warriors superstar Addin Fonua-Blake, “I’ll give you an exclusive, we’ve actually withdrawn our offer for Addin Fonua-Blake,” Richardson said.
He added, “I think he’s a great player, he’s one of the top three front rowers in the game. Our forward pack is really strong, and we can add to that with our young players coming through.”
In football: UEFA Champions League results: Lens 2-1 Sevilla, PSV 1-1 Arsenal, Bayern Munich 1-0 Man U, Copenhagen 1-0 Galatasaray, Napoli 2-0 Braga, Real Madrid 3-2 Union Berlin, Inter 0-0 Royal Sociedad and Benfica 3-1 Salzburg.
In combat sports: UFC President Dana White has poured cold water on Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback, refusing to offer a date for the former champion’s return to the Octagon.
It was announced in February that McGregor would return to competition against Michael Chandler in 2023, though no date was revealed for the bout.
Ten months on, the fight is still up in the air, and White was coy on when asked about the Irishman’s return.
In an interview with TNT Sports, the UFC President said, “At the end of the day... I say it all the time: Conor is extremely wealthy, has a lot of different options in his life. When Conor gets that hunger back and really wants to come back and fight, it’s all up to him.
“If you look at what the guy has accomplished in such a short amount of time, the amount of money that he’s made, and the business opportunities that he’s taken outside of the Octagon, Conor can do whatever the hell Conor wants to do – and good for him.”
And that’s a wrap!

Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 69 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 13 December 2023.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.
In rugby union: Bristol Bears are reported to be chasing Fijian number eight BIG Bill Mata, from Scottish side Edinburgh.
RugbyPass is reporting that Bears Samoan boss, Pat Lam is keen to add 32-year-old powerhouse and offloading genius, Mata to his squad for the 2023/24 season.
The Fijian star is reported to currently make in the region of £450,000 a season.
In rugby league: BOOM GONE – the entire Wests Tigers board and CEO Justin “fiasco” Pascoe have been dismissed in a stunning move following a bombshell internal review, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Former New South Wales Premier, Barry O’Farrell will be interim Chairman. Mr O’Farrell was previously Wests Tigers Chairman in 2019 before taking up a role as High Commissioner to India.
Shane Richardson will be interim Chief Executive Officer. He was previously CEO of Penrith from 2002-2004 with the Panthers winning the Premiership in 2003.
He was also the CEO of the South Sydney from 2004 to 2015, with the Rabbitohs winning the Premiership in 2014.
And senior NRL Sports journalist, Paul Kent has been found not guilty of allegations he attacked and choked his then-partner at his home in Sydney.
Following a two-day hearing in a Sydney Court, Magistrate Daniel Rees ruled that he could not find the charges proven beyond reasonable doubt.
In SportsBiz: One of the most extraordinary contracts in pro sports history just got even crazier.
Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese baseball superstar has signed a $US700Million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but will be paid just $US2M a year while playing for them.
The Athletic first reported the bizarre structure of the contract which will see Ohtani defer US$US680M of his salary until after the deal wraps up.
So Ohtani gets US$2M a year between 2024 and 2033 while actually playing for the Dodgers, and US$68M a year between 2034 and 2043.
In football: A Turkish referee was punched by a Club President before being kicked by another person after collapsing to the ground in a sickening attack in Turkey’s Super Lig.
The visitors received a 95th-minute red card, only to stun the home side with a 97th minute equaliser.
When the full time whistle blew, host team President Faruk Koca charged onto the pitch and punched Halil Umut Meler in the face.
As the referee hit the turf, another person – who appeared to be a Club official – kicked him in the head.
So that’s the beautiful game – now to combat sports: Aussie fight favourite, Robert Whittaker could still be catapulted into a UFC300 blockbuster against Kamaru Usman, despite having already agreed to fight a month earlier in UFC299 against Brazilian Paulo Costa.
Speaking with Fox Sports Australia this week, Whittaker’s Manager Titus Day confirmed that since they verbally agreed to accept the fight, Costa has vanished.
You mean like run away? Maybe he’s switched to netball.
And that’s a wrap!

Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 71 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Friday morning 15 December 2023.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.
In rugby union: “I didn’t do an interview before the World Cup,” Eddie Jones said yesterday at a packed media conference in Tokyo.
“I wish Australia all the best. I feel terrible about the results, because I wanted to go back and change Australia.
“But I don’t feel any guilt at all about the process.”
Jones repeated his claim that he had not interviewed for the Japan job until December, even though applications for the role closed on August 18.
“Mate, I gave everything I could for that short period of time and it wasn’t good enough.
“I feel terrible about the results of Australia but I don’t feel any guilt at all about this process
In rugby league: The greatest rugby league coach of all time is back on the market.
Wayne Bennett is open for business in 2025 when Kristian Woolf succeeds him at the Dolphins.
Bennett, who turns 74 in a few weeks, has won seven premierships from 10 grand finals.
He’s taken the Raiders, Broncos, Dragons and Rabbitohs to the NRL grand final and boasts a win rate of 62 per cent dating back to 1987.
The Dolphins want him to stay in a coaching director capacity, but Bennett is an on-field coach and he’ll have a whistle in his mouth for the rest of his days.
In football: Through to round of 16 of the Champions League: Arsenal, Atlético de Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, Borussia Dortmund, Inter, Lazio, Leipzig, Man City, Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, Porto, PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid and Real Sociedad.
Confirmed in third place and Europa League knockout round play-offs: Benfica, Braga, Feyenoord, Galatasaray, Lens, Milan, Shakhtar and Young Boys.
Finished fourth and knocked the F out of the Champions and Europa comps altogether: Antwerp, Celtic, Crvena zvezda, Manchester United, Newcastle, Salzburg, Sevilla and Union Berlin.
In combat sports: “A fight between me and Mcgregor would be crazy,” and with that the seed has been planted. Jake Paul vs Conor McGregor is going to happen one day soon when the price is right. As the problem child said in signing off on the interview, “Life is crazy.”
So the poster will say “Paul vs McGregor Jake vs Fake” or something like that.
And that’s a wrap!
