Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 03 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Wednesday morning 03 July 2024 where it is cloudy 22 degrees Celsius at 5am.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.
In Rugby Union: The British Women’s rugby 7s team has been slammed by feminists, led by Women’s tennis legend Martina Navratilova, and fellow British Olympic team members to Paris, for posing in lingerie.
In rugby league: NRL games tomorrow - Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs, 7:50pm AEST at CommBank Stadium. On Friday: Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans, 6pm in Coffs Harbour, Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers, 8pm at Suncorp Stadium.
And in football – EURO 2024 results this morning: Netherlands 3-0 Romania and in an upset Austria 1-2 Turkiye.
Switzerland, Germany, England, Spain, France and Portugal are already into the quarters; now joined by Netherlands and Turkiye.
In Sports Biz: July 01 every year marks the payment of serious money in ongoing salary deferrals for several former MLB stars including:
- · Bobby Bonilla who receives US$1.2Million annually from the New York Mets from 2000 until 2035, plus a second deferral agreement with the Orioles at US$500,000 each year from 2004-2028.
- Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will receive the final US$3.6M from a 16-year deferral agreement with the Reds.
- Manny Ramirez will receive US$2M from the Red Sox as part of a 16-year deferral pact running through 2026.
- Chris Davis will receive US$9.1M from the Orioles as part of deferrals contained within his prior US$161M contract. According to Spotrac, Davis has another US$40M due from the team between now and 2037.
Some of these payments are well in excess of the 2024 salaries of many current MLB stars.
Many more deferral payments are forthcoming from current contracts, which provide short-term financial flexibility for teams and longer-term security for players.
All of these contracts, however, pale in comparison to the US$680Million in total deferrals for Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani. The Japanese baseball phenom agreed to set aside US$68Million of his US$70M annual salary to help keep his new team competitive, and he will be paid that money instead between 2034–2043.
At Wimbledon: Andy Murray has withdrawn from Wimbledon due to an ongoing back injury. His game was scheduled to yesterday evening, the latest possible slot on Centre Court, to give the British tennis star a chance of faking it, but it was not to be.
Meanwhile, No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic pulled off a miraculous return, defeating Vit Kopriva, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in his first match since undergoing surgery on his right knee.
In the Paris Olympic Games: American teenage sprint sensation, Quincy Wilson is set to become the youngest ever US male track Olympian after the 16-year-old has reportedly been picked in the 4×400M relay team for the Olympic Games in Paris.
Wilson’s selection comes after a brilliant debut at the US Olympic Trials last week, where he twice broke the Under-18 400M world record of 44.59 seconds in the semifinals on Sunday, two days after he initially broke the record with a time of 44.66.
In Combat Sports: Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka scored huge salaries at UFC303 with the Brazilian Pereira banking US$3Million plus one of the largest fight bonuses in UFC history, with Dana White awarding Pereira US$303,000 for his successful UFC Light Heavyweight title defence.
Czech fighter Prochazka received a career-best US$1M pay day.
Finally, the BBC has been slammed for posting “Misstiano Penaldo” as the highlight tag of Cristiano Ronaldo’s missed penalty kick in their quarter final against Slovenia yesterday.
“Misstiano Penaldo” – that’s hilarious!
And that’s a wrap peeps!
