Tom Coomer has retired twice: once when he was 65, and then several years ago. Each time he realized that with just a Social Security check, “You can hardly make it these days.” So here he is at 79, working full-time at Walmart. During each eight-hour shift, he stands at the store entrance greeting customersYears ago, Coomer and his co-workers at the Tulsa plant of McDonnell Douglas, the famed airplane maker, were enrolled in the company pension, but in 1994, with an eye toward cutting retirement costs, the company closed the plant.“After they shut the plant down, I would dream that I was back at McDonnell Douglas and going to get my pension,” Coomer recalled. “In the dream, I would try to clock in but I couldn’t find my time card. And then I’d wake up.” WP AT&T has announced layoff’s affecting people in five states, including Missouri.Just days before Christmas, hundreds of people in the metro found out they will be out of jobs come Jan. 4.On Dec. 16, the company announced a surplus affecting an estimated 600 employees in Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.AT&T announced $1,000 bonuses for more than 200,000 U.S. employees in response to the GOP Tax Plan passing. BostonRed - Chicago Mayoral Election 2019

02/26/19 • 43 min

“I don’t think there’s any mathematical way, looking at the field and the number of candidates, that there wouldn’t be a runoff,” political strategist David Axelrod told the Tribune last week. Underscoring the slim possibility of a final decision Tuesday night, he said: “I mean, meteorologically there’s a way to get hit by lightning, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.” The horse rac Axelrod, the architect of former President Barack Obama’s political rise, said he thinks Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle likely will secure one of the two runoff spots with the backing of two powerful labor groups: the Chicago Teachers Union and Service Employees Union International. Early voting numbers by Friday had reached 74,000 and by Monday were expected to exceed the 89,000 early votes cast in 2015. Vote-by-mail, once known as absentee voting, is up. Of the 63,000 who applied to vote by mail — nearly triple the requests made in the last two city elections — about 24,000 ballots had been returned. One clue may come from Chicago’s voter registration numbers. They’re slightly up, which may add up to more voters heading to the polls. Right now, the city has 1.58 million registered voters on the rolls, up from 1.4 million in 2011 and 1.42 million in 2015 — the last two municipal election years. In 2011, 594,000 voters, or 42 percent of those registered, cast a ballot, while that number dipped to 438,700, or 34 percent of registered voters, in 2015, though the mayoral runoff between incumbent Mayor Rahm Emanuel and challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, now a congressman, drew a whopping 600,000 voters.

BostonRed - Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury Reviewed
play

01/07/18 • 46 min

I interviewedDonald Trump for The Hollywood Reporterin June 2016, and he seemed to have liked — or not disliked — the piece I wrote. "Great cover!" his press assistant, Hope Hicks, emailed me after it came . After the election, I proposed to him that I come to the White House and report an inside story for later publication — journalistically, as a fly on the wall Steve Bannon tried to gamely suggest that Trump was mere front man and that he, with plan and purpose and intellect, was, more reasonably, running the show — commanding a whiteboard of policies and initiatives that he claimed to have assembled from Trump's off-the-cuff ramblings and utterances. The president had a lot of weird feelings about Jared Kushner being Jewish: “For Trump, giving Israel to Kushner was not only a test, it was a Jewish test: the president was singling him out for being Jewish, rewarding him for being Jewish, saddling him with an impossible hurdle for being Jewish — and, too, defaulting to the stereotyping belief in the negotiating power of Jews. ‘Dr Henry Kissinger says Jared is going to be the new Henry Kissinger,’ Trump said more than once, rather a combined compliment and slur.” Variety Michael Wolff is a total loser who made up stories in order to sell this really boring and untruthful book. He used Sloppy Steve Bannon, who cried when he got fired and begged for his job. Now Sloppy Steve has been dumped like a dog by almost everyone. Too bad!” DJ Trump
