Episode 29 - Nicole Fisher, Host of Clinical misTrials and Health Equity & Ethics expert
I’m a clinical research professional with over 10 years’ experience in developing programs to improve minority patient outcomes and clinical trial participation. I create space for community partnership in pharma through patient engagement and education for medically marginalized populations. My primary goal is to ensure the intentional and ethical inclusion of patients in research. I believe this starts in the community and it is the responsibility of pharma to provide our community partners with the support for clinical trial safety education, safe and transparent spaces for dialogue in order to establish trust, and financial resources to address the social determinants of health that affect public health.
I host a True Crime podcast called Clinical misTrials that tells the stories about clinical research gone wrong in communities of color. It explores the historical medical mistrust of racial minorities in research and tells the ‘end of the story’ by highlighting the regulations and guidelines that were established as a result. Through my consultancy, I contract with clinical trial organizations such as CITI Program in development of webinars and op-ed pieces that focus on the ethics of consenting under-enrolled patients into clinical trials.
I serve on the executive board of directors for Heartland Alliance Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center in Chicago that serves our most vulnerable populations including families experiencing housing insecurity, people living with HIV/AIDS, and refugee/asylee children. Additionally, I serve on the executive board for Heal Chicago, a collective of professionals invested in dialogue and training toward becoming an anti-racist society.
Professionally, at my day job, I’ve accomplished this work through the conduct of national public health initiatives, implementation of culturally competent health literacy programs, assessment of community needs through ethnographic investigation, and development of patient partnership councils.
