The Power of Printmaking in Photography with Vlad Denko
Bokeh Banter Photography Podcast
04/24/20 • 54 min
As photographers, we always want to see our work fully appreciated. Sadly, in today's digital age, photographers often have their work that they put so much time into quickly forgotten in a cluttered, digital-image-filled world. Making high-quality printed products from professional images is not a lost art, thankfully.
Today, Vlad Denko joins the banter with Chris and Joe to bring new insight into the world of printmaking for photographers. Vlad comes from a background in photography since childhood and returned to being a "shoot and print" photographer when he realized that he and his wife, Myra, had portrait clients who were not having the lifetime enjoyment of their photographs that he wanted for them. Since making the switch, Vlad has become an expert in photographic printmaking and loves sharing his information with his fellow photographers. Denko Imaging services photographers from inside and outside the U.S. and prints for award winning photographers submitting to print competitions such as WPPI.
"We're analog creatures. We like to feel. We like to see. We like to touch. We like to physically interact with things. And as a story teller, we are obliged to deliver something more than just digital data." - Vlad DenkoBokeh Banter has added a new element for listeners to interact with as well in this episode! Beginning today, there will be ongoing photo assignments determined randomly every month (time interval may change). We encourage everyone listening to stretch their creativity and submit images for each challenge to our new Facebook group - Bokeh Banter Photography Podcast. This is not a contest but rather a means of pushing the community to choose creativity and inspire others in the process.
This time around, the assignment is well timed for a quarantined community. You must create a photo in which the subject is your office or desk location. In addition to that, Vlad has added a bonus challenge to include something in your image that is used for or is the result of printmaking. Here's the difficult part though. You must use the narrowest focal length you have at your disposal!
So take on the challenge! Office photos featuring printmaking-related objects, using your longest focal length possible. Sound tough? Good! Now go have fun with it! See you on the Facebook Group!
Join the Bokeh Banter Facebook group and submit your images for this month's photo assignment! facebook.com/groups/bokehbanter

Personal Style and Personal Creativity as a Photographer
Bokeh Banter Photography Podcast
05/29/20 • 51 min
As a photographer, where is the line between using photography for a healthy business income and obsessing over the business side of things to the point where all creativity has been killed? Do our own "personal styles" actually matter if we are trying to sell a product? What if our style is actually a lack of skill that we disguise with the term "unique style". And do these questions as a photographer ever end?
These insecurities are common for many photographers. Joe is one of them and apparently, Chris leans toward the more relaxed, just-enjoy-the-moment side of photography. Creativity is the main focus on this show and that can lead to some deeper discussions.

Killer Bees and Broken Legs
Bokeh Banter Photography Podcast
05/15/20 • 43 min
Smartphones have added a myriad of new tools and capabilities to a photographers arsenal. With apps to help you time light and plan shoots, a smartphone can do a lot of the work for you on a shoot. Although smartphones' cameras have come a long way in recent years, they still aren't to DSLR quality. At least in our opinion. Furthermore, there is the consistent access to social media. Is it good or bad for creativity as a photographer?
Also, Joe is scared of bees.

The Importance of Staying Creative - Photography in Havanah Glen
Bokeh Banter Photography Podcast
04/17/20 • 39 min
Now is a wonderful time to get away from people! To venture away from the city and take time to discover what natural beauty is around you. Joe and Chris discuss staying creative and the measures they are taking to keep the artistic juices flowing while practicing social distancing. One such measure was a trip to Havanah Glen State Park in Montour Falls, NY.
It's important as artists to remember to have creative projects just for yourself. Just to keep you fresh and eager to create more! Chris and Joe share their favorite activities to do in their down time and what they do to seek out new inspiration. For Chris, it's taking drives to previously unexplored local areas, enjoying time with his wife and taking pictures of his cat. For Joe, it's getting out into nature for a hike and landscape photography, spending time with his family including his baby girl, and seeking out projects that other artists have shared online for fresh new ideas.
Joe also created a vlog of the trip to Havanah Glen Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FV-q2aNyzI

Ben Horne - Landscape Photography on Large Format Cameras
Bokeh Banter Photography Podcast
03/08/20 • 49 min
Have you ever seen images of photographers who take their pictures with a huge camera while keeping their head under a small tent behind it? And the camera has what looks to be an accordion for a body? This is large format film photography and it is not a dead method. Ben Horne, YouTuber and landscape/nature photographer, has adopted this medium as his chosen form of photographing his journeys throughout the southeastern United States.
Despite the challenges associated with photographing using an 8x10 film camera, Ben shares how he actually enjoys the process and finds it as a form of meditation. His images require much more planning than a typical photographer and are all the more rewarding when they completed.
What's more, Ben Horne has made it his goal to not only make his travel and landscape photography a full-time career, he is months away from accomplishing that goal. But through it all, he aims to keep his work feeling "not like work".
In this episode of Bokeh Banter, Ben shares his stories and Joe and Chris talk about inspiration and traveling to the U.S. National Parks. As well as Ben's approach to keeping photography a passion and not a job.
