Ian Graham worked as Liverpool FC's Director of Research between 2012 and 2023. Under first Brendan Rodgers and then Jurgen Klopp, his role included helping the Reds identify possible transfer targets as they embraced a data-led strategy.

His tenure coincided with the club’s greatest period of success since the 1980s, including winning both the Champions League and Premier League in 2020. And his newly-released book, ‘How to Win the Premier League: The Inside Story of Football’s Data Revolution’, he reveals all about Liverpool’s transformation.

To mark his book’s release, Graham sat down with the Liverpool ECHO’s Theo Squires and lifts the lid on the Reds’ transfer strategy over the past decade in a fascinating exclusive interview.

He opens up on regularly locking horns with Rodgers during the years of the infamous transfer committee, sharing his frustration at missing out on a number of targets - including Diego Costa and Alexis Sanchez - while fighting against the arrival of Christian Benteke.

Everything changed at Anfield following Klopp’s arrival in October 2015, and Graham lifts the lid on some of Liverpool’s most successful transfers under the German’s watch - including Mohamed Salah - sharing fascinating behind-the-scenes insight on the Reds’ transformation.

Graham also has his say on Salah’s current contract situation, with Liverpool facing something of a dilemma ahead of the 32-year-old’s deal expiring next summer.

Meanwhile, a boyhood Reds supporter, he also explains why he decided to leave the club in 2023, and reveals all on Michael Edwards’ return to FSG - having previously set up his own consultancy firm with the former Liverpool sporting director.
