Episode 11 - The Father’s Day Edition of Episode 8

This is a rewind of Episode 8, “Finding Peace After Caregiving Ends,” strategically shared in the week before Father’s Day. Today I’m speaking to the hearts of listeners who have lost fathers, husbands, grandfathers, uncles, or someone special who’s been like a father. This is a deeper dive into a more emotional subject that is messy to think about and messier still to put into words. “What do I do now that my caregiving days are over?” “How do I heal from the absence of someone whose life has been so intimately interwoven with mine?”
There are volumes written on grief and recovery from loss. Full disclaimer, I am not a therapist. These are my observations about the grief process and tools that may help in healing, based upon all that I've learned. I offer three simple takeaways from three credible sources that have been useful for me and many others who are traveling this path to healing and wholeness after caregiving ends.

Episode 10 - Becoming More
Blessed in This Mess

Last week I spoke on Zoom to Margaret in England, as we chatted about my upcoming online talk to employees of a global technology company. It seems the need for support for family caregivers crosses oceans and time zones. We have so much in common, regardless of geography.
After scanning my website and listening to a few episodes of this podcast, Margaret wanted me to be sure include some dialogue about the upsides of being a family caregiver. To focus on the positives, despite and in the face of the grind...the day-in-and-day-out vigilance, the interrupted sleep, the appointments, the worry, the stress, the mess. Challenge accepted!
Today I’d like to suggest that we are becoming more. No. Not more grumpy or short-tempered; although some days feel like that. No. I mean the more you and I are becoming over the long haul. How do I know this is happening? Because I’ve been paying attention to us. And, as time marches on, we are becoming more of the good stuff, despite our messy days as a family caregiver. Today I cover my top 5 observations about the ways the family caregiving journey is molding us into better human beings.

Episode 9 - Simply Gratitude
Blessed in This Mess

This episode focuses on an element of emotional health I believe is a game changer, practicing gratitude, even when caregiving is messy. I share a story about a pair of inexpensive sunglasses that remind me of famous actress, Elizabeth Taylor. She was often photographed wearing large, round, dark lenses with black frames. I inherited a similar pair after my mom passed, and the lenses make the world look so beautiful! The lens through which we see the world makes a difference, doesn’t it? My focus today is on adopting a lens of gratitude, defining that lens, and offering a few simple suggestions around using it. Given the challenges of family caregiving, there’s no shame in needing an occasional reminder around being grateful, because the benefits of this perspective are huge.

- If you’re stuck, consider 3 things you were able to accomplish today. This can also be very basic, like “I was able to take a shower and wash my hair between tasks.” Or “I was able to take a 10-minute walk.”
- Simply gratitude, each day. This is your reminder about the power of this lens. 😊

Several listeners have asked me to address this topic, because they are struggling with it. Episode 6 - Playfulness and the Family Caregiver

This topic is a breath of fresh air for family caregivers and care receivers. I share a favorite audio clip from the Disney movie, Mary Poppins, highlighting the importance of finding the fun “in every job that must be done.” Author Courtney Ellis suggests we should all be more open to what she calls “the joy and freedom of play.” Even in the messiness of family caregiving, I couldn’t agree more There are many benefits to a playful mindset, for caregivers and everyone who surrounds them. Playfulness is easier to work into your day than you might think. Check out this episode for four simple steps to finding the fun in your day and for approaching the messiness of family caregiving from a playful perspective. One of my favorite episodes so far! - Ellis suggests we think of something we loved to do as a child and adapt our activities in that direction or think about what we’d do for fun if we had a day to ourselves. I offer some ideas to encourage us to think more on this!

Episode 4 - Relieving Stress with Meditation & Deep Breathing

Meditation and deep breathing are powerful tools to help reduce the negative impact of stress on family caregivers. In this episode, I share some common stress triggers for family caregivers, and ask you to think about your stressors and how your body is responding to them. I cover the definition of meditation and explain the many benefits of calming the mind and body in this way. Episode 5 will feature a guest expert who will further explain the use of these tools and share some simple exercises that can be used almost anywhere to relieve stress and calm the body. Episode 2 - Love in Four Little Words

In this episode prior to Valentine’s Day, I explore love in a fresh way, as we consider four little words that are really the core of family caregiving, “I am with you.” I share a story from 2015, when my mom fell in her independent living apartment and laid on the floor for hours, believing that my presence with her was more important than calling for help without me. I offer examples of so many circumstances where family caregivers practice love in these four little words, and suggest that “I am with you” is the greatest love of all this Valentine’s Day. Episode 36 - Lessons from 2023

This is the year in review, with a look at my top three lessons learned as I focused on “strengthening relationships in person” in 2023. It has been a wonderful year, filled with unexpected blessings as I connected with other caregivers and translated my experiences into podcast episodes.
Lesson #1: There is no substitute for being fully present with each other, face to face, heart to heart. Check out Episode 31, “The Gift of Time” for more on this topic.
Lesson #2: Self-care is the single most elusive piece of family caregiving. We all need daily reminders, fresh ideas, and inspiration to get this done. Self-care topics are sprinkled throughout episodes from 2022 and 2023.
Lesson #3: Gratitude may be the most powerful weapon in our arsenal against anxiety, fear, depression, and pessimism. Check out Episodes 9, 32, and 33 for more on this topic.
In 2023 these practices, being fully present with others, self-care, and daily gratitude have been so life-giving for me and for the caregivers in my world. Please consider “gifting” yourself in each of these areas in the new year.
After much thought and prayer, I’m pivoting again in 2024. My website, lorischlosser.com, has been updated and will remain a point of contact for speaking engagements and for listening to all the content I’ve recorded over the last couple of years.
