We talk to the lovely Eliza Victoria about her graphic novel After Lambana: Myth and Magic in Manila, her novel Wounded Little Gods, and how these books came together. Eliza tells us about the process of scripting a comic, seeing her characters and world on the page, and working with artist Mervin Malonzo. We also get into her creative process, writing in English, and telling distinctly Filipino stories. Plus, thermostats! Backgrounds! Easter eggs! And more!

Bitches on Comics - Episode 103: Wanda is the eternal outsider
play

07/28/21 • 55 min

In this week's episode, we answer a listener question about WandaVision, what the adaptation gets right and where it fails, and what comics we'd love to see adapted or not. We get into the erasure of Wanda's Jewish and Romani identities and so much more. We also discuss some of our favorite comics that could be adapted for the screen, from Monstress to Infidel, and the few we find wholly unadaptable.

Make sure to read Jessica Reidy's article "As a Romani witch, I can't stand WandaVision".

Our Comic of the Week is: LaGuardia written by Nnedi Okorafor, art by Tana Ford, colors by James Devlin, letters by Sal Cipriano.

"Some of the best meditations on what makes a life worth saving." - S.E. Fleenor

"The art is absolutely gorgeous. " - Sara Century

Our Flashback Files, interviews previously published on Patreon and now available for all, continue with Sara Century talking early Vertigo comics with Sam Richard of Weirdpunk Books. This episode originally appeared on Patreon on Nov 5, 2023.

Hello hello! This episode features Sam Richard and focuses primarily on the work of Peter Milligan, who wrote Shade the Changing Man and Enigma in the very early Vertigo days (among other things, those are the ones we talk about here). If you recall we prematurely announced this episode that is just now going live, and that's because it actually turned into a massive two-part conversation! So, apologies for the delay, but on the plus side, you get like three times the content I thought you were gonna get. So, enjoy, and come back for part two later this month!

Meanwhile, Sam is a great horror writer in his own right, as well as the person behind Weirdpunk Books (they published Sara's horror anthology last year, A Small Light & Other Stories). You can follow Sam across platforms @‌sammytotep and @‌weirdpunkbooks and you can find everything Weirdpunk at the website. If you like early Vertigo, Weirdpunk isn't exactly a direct successor but I think you'll find some spiritual crossover so be sure to check out their releases!

You can hear Sam talk more about Weirdpunk in this BoC episode, and you can hear Sara talk more about Weirdpunk in this one.

play

01/20/23 • 35 min

This week, we would like to introduce you to Thanks For Coming In, another podcast distributed by Realm.

Jamie McShane talks "Wednesday", acting for the long haul, and that time a casting director didn't mean to call him in!

About Jamie:

Jamie McShane stars in Tim Burton's smash-hit Netflix series Wednesday. The show spins off the iconic Addams Family series, following Wednesday Addams (played by Jenna Ortega) and is written by Al Gough & Miles Millar. Jamie plays Sheriff Galpin, who has a vendetta against the Addams family.

Jamie is often recognized for his role as Eric O'Bannon in Netflix thriller Bloodline (from Damages creators Glenn Kessler, Daniel Zelman & Todd A. Kessler), starring alongside Ben Mendelsohn, Kyle Chandler and Sissy Spacek. He played the long-time friend and partner-in-crime of "Danny" (Mendelsohn).

Our Flashback Files, interviews previously published on Patreon and now available for all, continue with Sara Century speaking with Kayla J. This episode originally appeared on Patreon on June 4, 2023

Happy Pride! Join Sara and Kayla J as we discuss the Murder Wives of our hearts, Mystique and Destiny. We don't cover everything, but we do cover some of the greatest hits for these two. Currently topping the X-Line, they spent a long time in the closet, but I think here you will find that they have always been Murder Wives.

Bitches on Comics - Introducing Vulgar History
play

01/27/23 • 69 min

This week, we would like to introduce you to Vulgar History, another podcast distributed by Realm

Lola Montez is such a groundbreakingly dirtbaggy grifter and icon, we had to invite friend of the pod Allison Epstein (author of A Tip for the Hangman) to share this wildly bananas saga. The saga is truly internationale as well, as part one travels along with Lola from Ireland to India, England, Scotland, Spain, France, and finally Bavaria. And it's just part one of two!! Enjoy!!
