S4 E4: "I'm $100k in student loan debt and I think it should be forgiven. Does this make me an entitled asshole?"
Bitches Get Riches
12/06/22 • 28 min
TODAY'S QUESTION:
I have over 100k in student loan debt, and I keep meeting other people with student loan debt that wax poetic about how they feel like “their money belongs to the department of education” and “they owe it to the country to pay that money back” “I made a commitment, I don’t want loan forgiveness” and sentiments of that nature. Am I entitled or being an asshole by feeling like: I’m paying mine back because I have to, but I don’t see anything noble about it and if I could get out of it, I would. I’m paying what I have to pay to qualify for the PSLF program and I’m not paying a penny more. Do I need to adjust my attitude?

S4 E6: "I'm not feeling challenged at work anymore. Does that mean it's time to move on?"
Bitches Get Riches
12/20/22 • 22 min
TODAY'S QUESTION:
I work for a start-up that grew from 25 people to 250 in the last year and a half, since I've been with them. I have a generous paycheck, great benefits, and a vesting agreement that I'm halfway through (but I know those shares aren't worth a dime if I can't sell them), I like the work that I do okay enough. This is my first full-time job. I'm curious about what else is out there. What else I could be paying attention to. What other projects I could spend my time on. How do you know when it's time to leave a position?

S1 E10: "I want a pedigreed dog. She wants a rescue mutt. It turned into a fight... and the fight got ugly."
Bitches Get Riches
01/17/20 • 26 min
Today's Question
My girlfriend and I are in our mid twenties, and have been seeing each other for four years now. We moved in together last spring and things have been going well. I love this girl. She's sweet, funny, interesting, pretty, and a little eccentric. She's absolutely my dream girl and I can't picture myself without her but we've been fighting for over a month and it's been hard.
At the end of May we decided to get a dog together. We're both dog people, having grown up with them. Since my parents are close to a couple that breeds dogs, we've bought all three of our dogs from them. My girlfriend, on the other hand, had only one shelter pup
When we first started talking about raising a dog together I asked her the standard 'what kind of dog should we get?' questions about what breed she preferred. And she scoffed at me and said it didn't matter, because we would adopt a pet, not buy one. She said it like it was obvious and that I didn’t have a say otherwise. We got into an argument about the pros and cons of adopting or buying. And it just escalated from there.
I'll get to the point and say we both started taking it personally and said some things. I said that buying gives you better quality, and that you know what you get. She quite rudely said that if we're paying for quality how come my family’s dogs have had health issues and died young, while her shelter dog lived to be seventeen. She said she looked down on people who'd rather pay thousands of dollars than save a life. We decided to cool down and give the discussion a rest.
We both felt unfinished after that but let it go but then we started getting at each other for different lifestyle choices. Like how she wants to get married and have kids one day and how I'm not so sure what I want yet. And how in my family having a degree is important and to her it's not. Sometimes we teased her about it since she only has a certificate but we never meant it rudely to her since she has a great job as a software engineer.
She's always been sort of indifferent to everything and said everyone has different values and the right to have different opinions should be respected. She eats meat, wears fur, buys non-organic, buys fast fashion, is non-religious, she's fairly liberal but tends to criticize some social movements, which is all fine but my point is she's never had a firm stance on anything. But it's like I picked a fight about the one thing she feels strongly about and it's been rough since then. I'm not sure what to do anymore and I need advice.

S1 E11: "I feel cornered by a friend who keeps asking to borrow money. How do I escape?"
Bitches Get Riches
01/23/20 • 19 min
Today's Question
How do I handle a friend whom I've lessened contact with because I'm afraid they'll ask me for money?
I let him borrow some when he moved into his new apartment and his roommate refused to actually pay rent or split utilities while my friend was crawling out of maxed credit cards. He paid me back but since then has asked more than once. I have 5 figures saved so I feel pressured to help out, but I want him to actually learn some lessons instead of coming to me for a loan.
And as a followup: how can I know what is financially expected as you get older? I'm self-employed (internet work with hard depression) but all my friends have adult jobs. Yet they also all still have student loans & credit card debt. I paid off my student loans, no credit card debt, have 25k saved and just bought a house thanks to my techie significant other. I still have a broke mentality since my significant other has 6 figures saved. It's hard to relate with my friends when there is such a mismatch of finances. We're all in our mid 20s.

S1 E8: "My mother demands information about my sex life. How do I get her to back off?"
Bitches Get Riches
12/12/19 • 19 min
Today's Question
I [22F] have been having some one night stands, and I recently decided it’d be best to keep my mother [56F] uninvolved in my love life. I let her know when I won’t be home, and will vaguely tell her I’m out on a date and staying over, but I won’t tell her who it is, where he lives, how long I’ve known him, etc.
She’s very upset that I’m having sex and staying over at guys houses. I feel like as an adult I can make my own decisions and she should be respecting that I want to keep my love life private. Apparently she’s been talking to my father about this as well and is super upset that she doesn’t have the details on who I’m with.
What can I do to ease her mind while also not telling her who I’m with when I go out?

S1 E6: "I lent my boyfriend money. He took it to a casino, and lied to my face about it."
Bitches Get Riches
11/21/19 • 28 min
Today's Question
“My [21F] boyfriend [28M] owes me over $100 and I found out he went gambling last night.
My boyfriend never really has money and still lives with his parents. I recently paid for a $40 dinner, spent over $50 on groceries for him this month, and gave him $80 for food and weed. He says he will pay me back next paycheck (and he usually does) but he is always asking for cash.
We are very honest with each other and we see each other almost every day. He said that he's flat broke and I even paid off a loan for him, but I found out from a mutual friend that he went to a casino last night.
Now, I have no problem with him going out, and he has every right to go out and have fun, but he lives HOURS away from the casino and I am a college student with very little money and have a hard time paying my bills with the money I keep lending him, and he goes off to this casino which is a very expensive place. Whenever he goes out when he's broke he always said that his friends are buying, but I don’t know which friend he could be talking about. He tells me everything too, so it's very unusual for him to go on a day trip and not invite me or tell me about it since we go everywhere together and we always communicate.
We have been together for 3 years and have a strong relationship and I spend the night at his house like 4 days a week even though he lives nearly 30 miles away. He’s not a moocher. I don't buy him everything and we will usually go 50/50 on things. Should I confront him about why he's not paying me back and going on an expensive trip that's 3+ hours away from his town?”

S3 E7: "I'm finished with the basic shit! What're the advanced financial steps that only rich people know?"
Bitches Get Riches
11/19/21 • 22 min
TODAY'S QUESTION:
What do you do when you finally have money for the first time?
I don't have consumer debt, I’ve paid off my student loans, I have an emergency fund, I’m maxing out my 401K... so now what? So many blogs on money stop at this point. But for real, what do "rich" people do with their money once the basics are covered?
Is it worth it to have a financial advisor? What percentage of your money should be kept in savings versus investments? What kind of investments are smart? How much should you be giving to nonprofits anyway? What else can you do with money other than save for retirementand invest in the stock market? Should I bethinking about rental properties, partially investing in a business, starting a business, or whatever? How does money make more money? What do you do when you've "made it"?

S2 E8: "A fancy restaurant totally misled me! Was I right to refuse to pay an unfair bill?"
Bitches Get Riches
08/28/20 • 22 min
Today's Question
Am I the asshole for refusing to pay at a restaurant that was false advertising?
So my girlfriend (her 27, me 28) wants to go to this fancy new restaurant in the city that she’s heard good things about. We get there and it seems like one of those hipster places but whatever, I’m hungry. I look at the menu and this place is crazy expensive---like every dish is more than $15-$20 and half the ingredients I’ve never heard of. I order the bison steak ($26) and my girlfriend orders some weird pasta, noki I think ($18). Very important, these were listed as ENTREES on the menu. Mind you, with drinks plus tip this is going to come out to over $60, which is already ridiculous for dinner for two people.
So anyway we order as we are starving. My steak arrives and I am shocked, it’s like 6 small pieces of sliced steak with some weird sauce on the side and a small handful of salad. I joke to the waiter 'where’s the rest of my steak?' and he explains they serve smaller portions at this restaurant because they focus on getting the highest quality ingredients. I don’t care if this bison was blessed by the Pope himself! It’s absurd to charge that much for such a small bit of steak, it’s highway robbery. When I go to restaurants I expect an entree to fill me up and be enough for leftovers.
I’m complaining to my girlfriend and she’s getting annoyed with me. Similar situation with her pasta, it was like maybe 12 pieces of noki dressed up with some frou frou bullshit.
Granted, the food was pretty good but I cannot get over how tiny these portions are. I’m a big guy and I like to eat, what can I say?
When the waiter comes back I inform him we will not be paying for our meal, and that they are falsely advertising entrees that barely qualify as a light snack. My girlfriend is begging me to stop but that’s where we’re different, I don’t let businesses push me around and rip me off.
A manager comes and apologizes but asks us to leave. I don’t end up paying as they realized I called them out on their bullshit. My girlfriend is silent the entire time on the way back. I’m still hungry so I drive through McDonald’s and get a burger, and when I did that she asked to be dropped off at her place.
It’s now the next day and I’m starting to think I didn’t handle the situation as well as I could have (I could have probably just asked for a discount). My girlfriend hasn’t responded to my texts so now I’m starting to think I’m an asshole. Am I the asshole?
