In May and Early June there are three important dates that people living in the United States observe. May 8th is VE (or Victory in Europe ) Day, The last Monday of the Month is Memorial Day and June Sixth is D-Day. I would like to play some music from the war years as I tell a little bit about each of these important dates. I know there are listeners from other countries who don't know about these dates but you can still enjoy the music. I hope you enjoy this program as I tell about three important American dates. This week I am going to present two radio remotes from the Hollywood Palladium by Tex Beneke and the Glenn Miller Orchestra from 1946. The Miller estate authorized an official Glenn Miller "ghost band" in 1946. This band was led by Tex Beneke who as time went on had more prominence in the band's identity. It had a make up similar to Glenn Miller's Army Air Force Band, having a large string section. Henry Mancini was the band's pianist and one of the arrangers. I hope you enjoy these radio remotes on the CBS network from 1946 by Tex Beneke. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

One aspect of the big bands that we are going to explore on this week's show is the small groups. They could be any size from a trio to a sextet. Each band seemed to have a featured small band and some of them had colorful names. We'll be hearing from groups such as the Gramercy Five, the Clambake Seven, the Bobcats, the Woodchoppers and others. There is some great music on today's program and I hope you enjoy this look at some of the different combos that were part of the Big Bands. Big Band Bash - Covers

When a band records a song that was made popular by another band the second band is said to be covering that song by the first band. For example when Benny Goodman recorded Frenesi that is a cover since it was a hit by Artie Shaw. Covers were very common in the big band years and I pulled out several that I found in my collection. There were many more available but I think you'll find it interesting to hear your favorite song done in a different way than the original. We'll be hearing from Kay Kyser, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and many more. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Big Band Bash - Glenn Miller Live Part 1
play

03/04/17 • 59 min

March 1, 1904 is the birthday of the late bandleader, Glenn Miller. In honor of his birthday I would like to present some live recordings by Glenn starting in May of 1939. That was when he started an engagement at the Glen Island Casino a very popular nightspot. The Glen Island Casino, in addition to being a very popular nightclub, had a radio hookup. The recordings on these two shows all come from a three disc set of all the radio remotes from Glen Island. Since these are some of Glenn's early recordings we will be hearing lots of songs that Glenn never recorded and not too many of his big hits. The four-part birthday salute to Glenn I did last year is still available if you want to hear a lot of those great Miller hits. Let's go back and imagine we are tuned in starting May of 1939. Here is Glenn Miller broadcasting from the Glen Island Casino, located in New Rochelle, New York. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Big Band Bash - We Remember Pearl Harbor and Glenn Miller
play

12/08/18 • 59 min

On the show today we remember two important dates from the past, December 7th 1941 and December 15th 1944. The former was the day that Japan attacked the US Naval Fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor and the latter was the day that Glenn Miller disappeared while flying over the English Channel. I decided to play some assorted songs and clips associated with Pearl Harbor and I also have two broadcasts from Glenn Miller's "I Sustain The Wings" radio show. The first is from December 11, 1943 and is about 30 minutes and then the next one is a 15 Miller broadcast. I hope you enjoy the music as we pay a tribute to the men and women who lost their lives on December 7, 1941 and also as we remember Major Glenn Miller. The Uncollected series by Hindsight records has many recordings from the Big Bands. I started playing from this set a few weeks ago but I am going back to the series for the show today. There are three volumes by Les Brown in the series and I have picked a few songs from each disc. The highlight is hearing Doris Day singing live with the band performing their big hit Sentimental Journey. Big Band Bash - Glenn Miller Birthday Salute Part 4
play

03/26/16 • 57 min

This past March 1st was the birthday of the late Glenn Miller. We are continuing our birthday celebration by rerunning a 4 part series on Glenn that I put together that originally aired during October of 2014. This series was one I produced to remember the 70th anniversary of his disappearance. This is the last part in the 4-part series, and I'll be playing a live radio remote from Glenn's civilian band on the Sunset Serenade program. This is an hour show featuring all the Miller stars Tex, Marion, Ray and the rest of the band. I hope you enjoy the recordings from one of the top bandleaders from this era, the late Glenn Miller.
