The Uplifted Serpent Sign
Bible Insights with Wayne Conrad
02/08/24 • 18 min
John's gospel narrative is organized around 7 miracles that demonstrate that he is the Messiah, the Promised One, the Deliverer, the Savior. But in addition to these ministry signs Jesus gives other signs. After he cleansed the Temple he was challenged concerning his authority. He gave them the sign- Destroy this Temple and I will raise it up in three days. He was prophetically speak of the temple of his body that would be raised back to life after he was killed. The climaxing sign in John's gospel is Jesus resurrection from the dead.
Nicodemus , a ruler of the Jews, came to visit Jesus during the early days of his ministry in Judea. He said to Jesus, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus startled him with a discourse on his need to be born again by the sovereign work of the Spirit. He then gives Nicodemus this sign which explains how it is possible for God to forgive sinners and have access to God. "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life .' John 3:14-15
This was a reference to what happened during the wilderness days of the Hebrews in route to the Promised land. When they grumbled and spoke against Yahweh and Moses God visited them in judgment by poisonous snakes that bit thousands who died. The people beg Moses to ask God to take the snakes away and to stop the punishment. God told Moses to make a bronze snake image and put it on a pole so that when a person was bitten by a serpent he could look on the snake imaged on a pole and live. (Numbers 21:4-9)Jesus told Nicodemus this was sign pointing to him. It was a prophecy of his destined death by crucifixion when he would take the judgment due his people and when they looked to him in faith they would live . He will some 3 1/2 years later speak his being lifted up to some Greeks who came seeking him. (John 12:32-34) Paul explains the meaning of Jesus death in terms that explain the divine transaction that took place with Jesus in 2 Corinthians 5: 19, 21 In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them. ...For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Drawing Near to God with David

After God has established a covenant with David and his household David comes before the presence of Yahweh God. David's prayer of response can teach us much about prayer. Prayer is an intentional come before God in humility to present our acknowledgement of him and to ask him to fulfill his will.

Prophet for Hire
Bible Insights with Wayne Conrad
09/11/23 • 21 min
One of the most interesting characters in the first section of the Bible know as the Law is Balaam. He is a prophet of God who on his way to try and curse the children of Israel enroute to Canaan had an actual conversation with his donkey! This was God's supernatural intervention to press upon Balaam his absolute need to speak over the Hebrews only the words he would put in his mouth. (Numbers 22-24) Even after Balaams blessing not cursing the people he found a way to get the money from Balak by advising him how to lure the men of Israel into idolatry by using the women of Moab. Numbers 25:1-3.
Numbers 31:16
Behold, these, on Balaam's advice, caused the people of Israel to act treacherously against the Lord in the incident of Peor, and so the plague came among the congregation of the Lord.
Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet's madness.
But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality.
Matt. 16:26 Jesus words
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

The Holy Spirit and Jesus' Presence
Bible Insights with Wayne Conrad
11/22/22 • 13 min
On the day of his resurrection from the dead Jesus twice revealed himself to his disciples at a meal. He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. (Luke 24:31f and Luke 24:43). Perhaps this is the reason the Lord's Supper or Communion is referred to in Acts as "the breaking of the bread" (Acts 2:42; Acts 20:7).
Jesus connected his spiritual presence to the partaking of bread in his teaching on himself as the bread of God come down from heaven in John 6.
A question: How do we know Jesus today? I have never seen Jesus in the flesh, or heard his voice, yet I can say that I know him. I am not just speaking about him in the New Testament narratives but really knowing him personally and having fellowship with him. True, God's Word is necessary, but the Holy Spirit is the One who makes Jesus known. Jesus spoke of him as another Paraclete, or Helper - the Counselor who would come in his name and make Jesus known to us. Jesus spoke of what we now call the Lord's Supper as a meal in which we take and eat bread and share a poured cup of the fruit of the vine . He used these words of instruction and interpretation, "Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matthew 26:26-29)
Paul brings all of this together in 1 Corinthians 10:16 where he writes, "The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?" The required answer from the context is "Yes." "Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread." He contrasts this with pagan worshippers partaking communion with demons in their feasts. He is speaking of the real spiritual presence of either demons, on the one hand, or the Lord Jesus himself, on the other hand. Paul writes, "I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons."
The Holy Spirit is the One who makes Christ Jesus' presence real to us. Through the Holy Spirit we have communion, fellowship, participation with the living Ascended Jesus Christ who is in his body with the Father, yet spiritually present with us by the Holy Spirit. Some words in the communion service express this truth, "Take and eat, and feed upon Christ in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving."

Paul writes in Romans 15:4 , "For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." So reading the Bible, God's written revelation, is essential for spiritual life and spiritual growth. What are some important things to know as we approach the reading of the Bible?

How You Can Be Righteous before God
Bible Insights with Wayne Conrad
10/28/22 • 20 min
Jesus tells a story that illustrates how a person can be declared justified, in right standing before God. It is found in Like 18:9-14. Two very different people with very different prayers- one an outstanding person zealous for God who does all the right things and avoids the obvious bad. He prays basically to himself about himself with a thank you to God for his help. He regards the other man with contempt.
The other man knows he is unworthy and has nothing to commend himself but with deep awareness of his sin, his person as a sinner, he calls upon God for mercy based on the atoning sacrifice. A literal translation "And the tax-gatherer, having stood afar off, would not even the eyes lift up to the heaven, but was smiting on his breast, saying, God be propitious to me -- the sinner!" In essence he prays, God be my mercy seat!
What is the outcome? Jesus said only the repentant tax collector who call on God to show him undeserved mercy based on the atoning sacrifice. This is a picture of the great truth of salvation by grace alone in Jesus Christ alone received by faith only.

Singing Prayers of Confession of Sin in Corporate Worship
Bible Insights with Wayne Conrad
07/23/22 • 13 min
In my last podcast we looked at the entrance into worship in which we can sing prayers of praise, adoration and belief to God. The second movement in biblical Christian worship that in which we engage is the acknowledgement of our sins and a calling on God for renewal by fresh cleansing. This movement helps us declare the gospel to one another. We come before a holy God but as sinful people we cannot come in our righteousness but only by his grace. This part of the worship is ripe for singing our prayer either of confession proper or the declaration of God's pardon through Christ work and our renewed dedication to walk as his children. John Calvin began his public order of service with a call to worship immediately followed by the confession of sin. The prophet functions as a model here in the worship he experience in the temple. Isaiah 6

The Why and How of the Lord's Supper
Bible Insights with Wayne Conrad
05/04/22 • 15 min
There are only two directed commanded worship actions that the Lord Jesus gave to his church, All other worship elements are found in both the First and the New Testament. These two commanded rites or rituals are the baptism of those who repent and believe the gospel and the observance of the Lord's Table. There are many facets to the teaching on the Lord's Supper . This broadcast considers briefly why we come to the Table and the essential biblical elements, the words and actions to its proper observance. How central it is to full Christian worship is evidence by the inclusion of the account of its institution in all three Synoptic gospels- Matthew, Mark, Luke and Paul's Letter to the Corinthians chapter 11 and also a reference in 1 Corinthians 10. John records another action at the Passover and his teaching preparing the disciples for his departure via the cross and resurrection plus his ascension.

Gospel Recovery at the Reformation
Bible Insights with Wayne Conrad
11/16/23 • 10 min
What was recovered at the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. The short but accurate answer is, The Gospel! Now the gospel is the announcement of the person of Jesus Christ and what he accomplished for us people and our salvation.
It is the good news of salvation from sin and its consequences to eternal life in felowship with the holy God through the actions of Jesus- lI delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died mfor our sins nin accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised oon the third day pin accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me....He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
1 Corinthians 15:1-8; Acts 1:3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
The recovery of the gospel is summed up in the slogan- Christ Alone
Acts 4:12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men[a] by which we must be saved.”
John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
