In this episode, we have Ruchir Sharma (@ruchirsharma_1, Media Critic) and Vishal Ganesan (@vjgtweets, curator @hindooHistory) back to discuss India’s perception in the World and how we can shape that narrative. We begin by discussion recent events where American celebrities like Rihanna (Singer, Performer) and Mia Khalifa (Adult Actor) along with Swedish Environment Activist, Greta Thunberg, among others tweeted out in support of the Indian Farmers’ agitation against the government.
Ruchir explains the mechanics of the ‘toolkit’ that was revealed inadvertently, while Vishal explains the perception of diaspora in the US and why they should strive to better understand what is happening in India.
We discuss the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) response and what we should do further to counter narratives that hurt India’s standing in the World. We then move on to discussing what India’s global narrative could be, how we can promote that in various channels, and how we can make this bipartisan policy irrespective of change of governments.
This is a fascinating deep dive into civilizational and cultural aspects that impact everyday issues in the World. Over the last couple of months, the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged through India. It has been a difficult time for all of us and indeed, most of us have been personally affected. There is plenty of interest both at home and abroad about the status of the pandemic and the measures taken by the Modi administration to combat it.
In this special episode of Bharatvaarta, conducted in collaboration with Conservative Friends of the Commonwealth, we spoke to veteran journalist Anil Padmanabhan. He has written for publications such as the Economic Times, Open Magazine, Khaleej Times, Mint, and India Today. He is also a Nieman Foundation Fellow.
With his educated view, we cut through the clutter and see things the way they are. We began the discussion with an introduction to the second wave, exploring whether we were unprepared for the resurgence of the pandemic. We then went on to discuss changes taht can be made to the federal structure to increase effectiveness in such situations.
We also discussed media coverage of the second wave, parallels between the UK and India, and possible steps that the government can take to reduce the impact of the third wave. We ended by decoding the political impact of the second wave of COVID and the economic future of India.
