Beyond The O.R. With Dr. Brenner

What would you do if you were visiting a foreign country and suddenly found yourself in the midst of a catastrophic natural event, government coup or armed uprising? Our host Dr. Kevin Brenner can tell you exactly what to do – because he recently found himself in exactly that situation, stranded in Morocco following a devastating 6.8 earthquake. He was fortunate enough to have a connection that got him directly to Mike Coleman, SVP for Strategic Partnerships at the international security company Global Guardian and our guest on this episode of Beyond the OR. If you’ve never considered prepping yourself before travel and don’t have a go-to resource, here’s why you might regret it should you hit a bump – big or small. “When you’re in the middle of a crisis you need ... something that gives you comfort,” observes co-host Elizabeth Morales. “It’s not just the physicality of everything (Global Guardian) does. It’s also that emotional support that you need in the case of an emergency.” The unexpected is just that, but Mike, a former Green Beret, and the entire team at Global Guardian (made up primarily of military and law enforcement veterans) have the depth of expertise and international network you need to enjoy peace of mind. Find out what measures you can take to mitigate risk or secure first-responder medical support in times of need and hear the dramatic story of how Dr. B, his wife and their group of traveling companions were safely and quickly evacuated off a devastated Moroccan mountainside in the middle of the night, thanks to Global Guardian’s network of trusted operatives. These are the people, says Dr. B, that you want on speed dial when you’re under duress and don’t have a plan. Global Guardian is prepared to swoop into 135 countries, providing whatever resources necessary to ensure your safety. Tune in and find out how to get more information about navigating the unpredictable. Says our guest: “The world is not getting any better, or safer.”

Wherever you’re headed in the world, here’s a contact worth having on hand! Reach Global Guardian’s security support website at this link or dial in direct at +1-703-566-9463. You can also click here to check out real-time examples of their medical and emergency services.

Want to reach out to Dr. B? You can make an appointment here or call his office directly at 310-777-5400 to start a conversation about whatever cosmetic, reconstructive or related issue is on your mind!

Kevin & Shannon Stacy - Co-Founder of The Station Foundation

On this very special episode of Beyond the O.R., Kevin and Shannon Stacy pull back the curtain on the personal struggles that members of the Special Operations warfare community and their families face, often in isolation. Dr. Kevin Brenner invites the couple to share the important work being done by The Station Foundation, the nonprofit support organization they founded to serve returning veterans through creative, healing, hands-on programs. Shannon, whose debilitating BII (Breast Implant Illness) Dr. B treated with amazing results (through his work with Valor for Life), gives us a very vulnerable look at the impacts on children whose fathers are constantly on missions and the ways in which we can offer support to the stoic women holding the home front together while their husbands are away. You will learn about the remarkable world of Special Operations and the community of people helping returning warriors to navigate the rough terrain. Reintegrating into civilian life has challenged generations of veterans, many of whom struggle in the shadows with minimal support from the VA system or a patchwork of Band-Aid remedies. The Montana-based Station Foundation offers a completely different model for this transition, including a 10-day family bonding experience as a starting point to reset and rebuild. It’s a unique peer-based network that brings understanding, compassion and a solutions-based approach. The central goal: Bringing military families back into balance, reconnecting them with their wider communities and everyday life. “We do a really good job of going to war. Our country’s great at it,” says Kevin, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and helicopter pilot who served with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. “But we do a really bad job of coming home.” Through the work they are doing at The Station Foundation, the Stacys are part of a powerful web of nonprofits working tirelessly to turn that tide and foster conversations like this one with Dr. B and Co-host Elizabeth Morales – raising national awareness that is long overdue!
